Been a while here's last thread

George had been doing pretty well, we are just two days short of his OTJ 2 year anniversary. At the weekend he developed a watery eye and started sneezing, by monday morning he is quite snuffly, and being a bit funny about his food (those of you that know him know this is not normal for him). Anyways yesterday at lunch, he seemed to loose his balance fell over and had what appeared to be a little seizure, it didn't last long less than 5 secs. He came around, but just lay there not wanting to move, BG was 107 after a while he got up went and used the LB and then went to bed refused his lunch.

I took him to the vets yesterday afternoon, he wasn't running a temp, she listened to his heart and chest and found nothing wrong, we've done a BW and are awaiting results.

He's fallen over twice more yesterday, seems like he gets dizzy when he gets up to walk around and falls over. then he just sits their, seemingly gripping the earth like he's afraid he's going to fall off.

This morning he has had his breakfast and his mid morning snack. BG was up at 170 at +3 have spoken to the vet and we've decided that I will run a curve today and if his BG is no different I will be restarting insulin support. I'm going to nip out and get some keto strips and then stalk him at the LB.

He could do with some LL vines.

We are hoping that she will have the results later today, tomorrow at the latest (it's a local holiday here, but vet is going to check her email and forward me the results/call me)

I think the BG is definitely up because of whatever is bothering him. But both vet and I want to nip it in the bud. As we know remission can be a fragile beast.
 
Oh Gill! I am so sorry to hear this about BFG and I so hope the BW results are good ones. And that what ever happened with the seizure- like symptoms do not come back again. I believe others here have had cats with a random seizure and then it never happened again. Kitties can also have labyrinthitis like humans. It can arise from a upper respiratory virus, just like humans. I’ve had a couple of bouts myself and I can tell you it’s very disorienting, had to walk close to walls, etc. Also, Teasel’s brother had an episode where he had symptoms off and on for about two days. It also involved his two pupils being different in size - scary but resolved uneventfully.

Unfortunately no, she hasn't got the equipment. I've phoned all vets within a one hour drive and none have the equipment to do a cats BP. Driving him a long way is problematic as he hates the car and no doubt his bp reading would be affected.

I have been thinking it seems like an balance problem, and whether it was an ear problem. His outer ear was clear, when vet looked at it but she wouldn't have been able to see anything more internal.
I'll be speaking to her later today when she gets the results, so I'll raise the question.

Inner ear, I hope that is all there is to it. With dizziness there would be nausea too. :bighug:

I don't think he's has nausea, he's off his food but I think it's more a not being able to smell problem, he stole the kittens food earlier, it's stinkier than his (its also LC). I've been raising his bowl just to make it easier for him he sounds less snuffly when eating if the bowl is raised too.

He perked up a bit at lunch, but is generally looking a bit bewildered.
 
I’m so sorry George is not feeling well. I really hope you get the lab results today and it indicates something that you and your vet can form a plan of what to do next.

I also hope the high numbers are transient and that you either don’t need to restart insulin, or if you do, it’s very, very temporary.

He's never had allergies before, in fact other than diabetes and fluff he's been a healthy boy. Do you think allergies could come out of the blue like that in a 17-19 yr old kitty?
I do worry about heart disease and hypertension. He has a murmur, only a very minor one that was noted by the vet at Battersea Dog and Cats Home back when we adopted him in 2006, he came with a shaved belly where they had done an ultrasound. But no vet that has seen him since has been able to hear the murmur, so I can only assume that it was very small. Vet listened to his heart yesterday and could hear nothing strange.
I think an inner ear infection brought about by a URI seems to fit with how his symptoms have evolved. I'm keeping fingers crossed its treatable whatever it is. Hopefully the BW will give some clues.
 
Olive has a transient murmur. Meaning it's not always detectable (I was told). I had the cardiopet blood test since she is a mix of the breeds predisposed to hcm. Blood test was negative, however, when echo was done because 1 vet heard the murmur, echo came back with grade 2 AND hcm. Now on benazepril to slow down progression of hcm hopefully. It might be worth checking it out to see if murmur progressed since 2006.
 
Feel better BFG, hope it clears up when his cold runs its course. I can relate to being worried when the hoover isn't interested in food!
 
Tons of vines and prayers for both of you. I’ll never understand why all vets don’t have blood pressure machines. I got one refurbished and all that goes with it and it wasn’t outrageously expensive. Vets charge to take the BP so recoup in weeks. I just wish I got to use mine. I’m not suggesting George has high BP. Just wish all vets checked it at least occasionally. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Gill I am new to the site but sending love to you and George. I am not sure if what I am going to say is completely stupid but a friend of mine went through dizzie spells when carbonate calcium crystals in the inner ear geo displaced. This causes vertigo and spells. My friend was terribly concerned but then really relieved to find out it is not serious at all and there is a quick and easy fix with some excercises. I am sending you the link

Thanks for the link, quite an interesting read, I've been researching vestibular disease in cats not found any mention of this, but that's not to say its not possible.
Cat can get idiopathic vestibular disease and with the nystagmus I saw this morning when he had his dizzy spell, I'm leaning to there being a problem with his inner/middle ear. Though vet doesn't think there is infection because the BW didn't show levels that would have been indicative of an ongoing infection.
 
I have occasional positional vertigo that began after I hit my head on the pavement during a fall in a running race. It was explained to me that 1 or 2 of the otoconia were rolling around, causing the vertigo. I learned to control it by not putting my head in the positions that made me dizzy. The accident was in 1985 and I still have to be mindful! When I'm in one of my vertigo phases (I get about one a year now), I just have to be careful. (not something you could explain to a cat!)
If it is positional vertigo, I hope that our Deputy George will be able to work his way out of it. If it is caused by the congestion, I believe there are meds that can address it, especially since it came on so quickly.

Hi Gill sorry for the "judy" in my previous post how embarassing. I sometimes write my posts in word first (to check for spelling mistakes) and the spell check has sometimes a mind of it's own! I read your comment on the vestibular ear dissease. I am so sorry he still is having trouble and hope you find the cause soon. Sending good vibes from Argentina. :cat:
