Need some help trying to get Sammy to eat. He has been pretty down since late yesterday morning, and hasn't eaten much at all. I was able to get him to eat some high carb food this morning, but he just thew it up about an hour later. I don't know what to do. He has eaten barely anything in the last 24 hours. I need suggestion on what to try.

I don't know enough to have any suggestions, but I am sending healing energy to Sammy so he will get his appetite back. Feel better soon, Sammy!

Have you tried some FortiFlora or crushed freeze dried meat on top of his food?
I used to go to the grocery store, and buy some human tuna (in water only) and some lunch meat and some steak and some shrimp and whatever else I could think of. The checker never knew it was all for my cat.
Sending feel better vines to Sammy.
Is your vet open today? If it were me, I would try to grab an appointment, since mine is always closed Sundays.

I agree with Dyana...I would call the vetty. I remember you mentioned a day or so ago that he's now on an AB....which is he on? ABs can definitely cause stomach upset and lack of appy.

Thanks, I have tried FortiFlora, freeze dried meat and tuna. Nothing seems to interest him. Like I mentioned he did eat some higher carb food, but then threw it up, probably because he wasn't use to the food.

I am wondering how long I can keep trying to get him to eat before I start assist feeding him. I tried to get a little food in his mouth hoping it would stimulate him to start eating on his own. That hasn't worked so far.

I am off to the grocery store to see if I can find something that he will eat.

If he's on an AB, the vet may tell you to stop it or replace it with a different kind.
I always tried to remember to give a probiotic a few hours after giving an antibiotic.

Sending vines for Sammy. I hope he'll want to eat soon. Have you tried meat baby food? Beech Nut Stage 1 turkey or chicken are just meat and broth (no onions or garlic).

Hugs and scritches,

I am still at the retreat until tomorrow. I am just wondering if he is just homesick. I was able to get him to eat a tiny bit of Fancy Feast Classic Food. Hopefully he will keep it down, and want to have more later.

I wish I could agree with you about being homesick but not with vomiting. It is likely a reaction to the antibiotic or whatever caused him to need one. He is unfortunately being smart by not wanting to eat when it leads to vomiting and he is nauseous. As I recall you don't have a definite reason for the antibiotic. Is that correct? I would definitely call your vet's office to see if you should at the very least stop the antibiotic and see if you should get something for nausea. He has to eat enough to prevent liver issues. What do you think? Also if you got ve something he really likes but rarely give him which gets him to eat and then vomit, you may cause a food aversion.

The stress of the trip could also be causing pancreatitis even if he's never had it before. Feed small amounts often like you are doing to not aggravate the pancreas. Hugs and vines.

Sending lots of tummy vines for Sammy!!

Billie was on Clavamox a while back and would not eat. She was switched to Veraflox, and she had some diarrhea but her appetite came back. ETA: I just remembered that when Billie had the problem with the Clavamox, the vet told me to stop giving it for a day to see if the problem resolved. It did, and then she started the Veraflox.

I see in Sammy's profile that he has a history of pancreatitis - if it's not the AB, maybe he is having a flare up from the stress of being away? Billie recently started having issues with not eating/nausea, and it turned out to be pancreatitis. She started taking ondansetron and has been doing great on that.

These are just thoughts - I know it could be a number of things. Hopefully, he's just having trouble with the AB, but I'd head to the vet.

My go-to snacks when Billie won't eat are ham, tuna, and rotisserie chicken.

Hi again, Tina,
I just remembered that you were camping at a rustic retreat. Is there any possibility that Sammy could have eaten something he found lying around or gotten into some insecticide or something similar? The ASPCA has a 24-hour poison hotline if you suspect anything of the sort: 1-888-426-4435

Sending vines and good thoughts,

Ella & Rusty
