Having trouble with my computer. I hold the button down to turn it on & a yellow light blinks & nothing happens? It took me 10 mins to get it to come on.It might end up in the shop over the weekend.

Everything is about the same with my kitties. I tried lowering the dose for Ravan by a tiny bit but his BG went up it looks like for now I'll need to keep it the same.
 
If your computer is a desktop (non-laptop), that could be the power supply dying. If the computer is a laptop, the battery could be toast - and sometimes they won't even work when plugged in if the battery is dead.

Ravan's numbers looking stellar - Leoberry is jealous.

No, not one of my kitties. Both my boys are long hair orange cats. I copied that from someone post a while back.

Good luck with you computer. I am so stupid with that sort of stuff.
 
A power supply is just a small transformer. It takes 120v (from your wall) and converts it to different voltages including +12v and +5v. Anyhow, like any electronic part, the power supply can die. And they are easily replaceable. Think of a simpler device like a surge protector power strip. Sometimes those die too. It's hard to diagnose a computer over the internet, so I was just suggesting.

My full time job is security (data center and corporate), and I have a PhD in Computer Science - so I'm way over educated. I'm also PCI DSS certified - so I've dealt with credit card protection and audits as well.

Sounds interesting, but after awhile it is just work. Here's a fun story. In the last 15 years one of my managers was with me after a security presentation, so I said "let's look at the audit I just completed" (a SOC 1 audit). It was displayed on the wall, and about 2 minutes into it, he said "I need to get some water". He never came back. It was that boring to him too! He only knew that I was deep into it, and that I was doing a good job. LOL:eek:

If it were the transformer wouldn't it be just shot? I mean it came on now without a problem. This problem seems to happen sporadically?
 
Transformers and power supplies can have partial failures. Computer power supplies usually do fail all the way, but not always. They don't always just die. Sometimes one set of windings can fail. For example, the windings for the 5v may fail, but the 12 volt windings are still working. Or a part on the circuit board may fail.

I would say 5 years for a high-use computer is good. Anytime after that, the power supply could be suspect. Any decent PC shop can diagnose it easily. I have a 10 year old PC (amongst others). That computer is on its 3rd power supply. The previous 2 supplies had full failures. They were real easy to diagnose.
 
If the problem is sporadic, it is probably another issue. Could be some hard disk issue and it is having trouble booting.

Quick research it is either memory or MB failing. It is a Dell XPS410 (and at least 10yo running Vista :eek:)

If this is the case should she leave it on all the time (don't power off)? I am going to see about getting her a newer (older) laptop through work but it may be a week before I can get it wiped and shipped.

Funny thing... I start my Dell TechDirect certification next week :joyful:
 
I'm so used to the big clunky tower this hp looks like a toy! It's refurbished? Isn't it kinda worrisome buying a used computer? Like I said, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers!

The one my son gave me has a 20" screen. It's nice to watch movies on.
 
The issue really could be any number of things, including the items Lizzie listed. That's cool that you are getting certification at Dell. I was part of the Dell server group in Round Rock 5 when they sold their millionth server in 2001.

It's interesting to see the populace and their computer needs. 20 years ago, most PCs were....well desktops. Now when you go online or into BestBuy, almost everything is laptop centric.

I wouldn't be worried about a used computer. Once they pass diagnostics, they are fine. I would be worried about Vista though!:eek::(:eek:

Exactly what @JeffJ said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb at all, especially an HP. You would spend at least $100-200 on repair of your existing desktop and that is IF they would work on it with the Vista OS.

I use a mini desktop Dell at work. They are sweet little workhorses. I want one for home for my media center.
 
All new computers are going to be 10x faster than your old one. Nearly all the components are faster. Only one exception. If you get a computer with a spinning hard drive vs SSD (solid state drive), the new spinning hard drive is about the same as the 10 year old drive.

Unless you are doing gaming (which you are not), a newer computer will be an improvement. The advantage of a newer computer is that it will have Windows 10, which can get current security updates.
