Yesterday's Condo

This morning's reading was a little higher than the past couple of days, but I do know that he ate within 30-45 minutes of this test. Last night he had only come down a tiny bit after dinner and fluids, but I am hoping that he came down a bit more over night.

Tonight I will be giving fluids again, I was going to shoot for 200 ml, but I think that might be a bit too big of a jump from the 100 ml we have been giving, so I might try 150 ml tonight. I guess I will see how it goes. If Sammy seems to being okay with it I might try to push it, but if he starts to get antsy then I will probably cut it off early.

I updated Sammy's SS with his Labs from yesterday and January. I am very interested to hear your comments if you have experience with CRD/CRF. We had a cat previously who had CRF and we gave 100 ml fluids every day. When he first had an issue, we think he ate a bit of a Lily leaf, he was near death, but we brought him back around with daily fluids at the vets office for more than a week. and then after that we just did the 100 ml at home daily. His numbers came down to almost normal and he was with us for an additional 2 years. Sammy's numbers are not anywhere near where Max's were so I am hopeful that we will be able to bring Sammy's numbers down with a more aggressive fluid treatment.

Hope everyone has a great day.

How much does Sammy weigh? That would be a lot of fluids. Most give 100m. daily. The purpose of daily fluids is to keep him hydrated, not to bring the numbers down. When you get a chance would you please post all the labs. Some of the other numbers would help show if he is dehydrated. Even though the other numbers are normal the actual numbers will help those of us that know something about labs.

Happy Day 6!:D:D:D:D:D:D

@tiffmaxee The vet is the one that recommended the 200 ml. She did some sort of calculation and said it would be okay to go up to 200 ml. I even asked if we could do 200 ml all in one spot, because I thought the max was 150 ml. I might just stick with 150, I know we have done that amount before for Sammy as well as our other cat that had CRF.

Why am I not surprised? YOU are correct. Have you looked at Tanya's CKD site? It has everything you want to know about CKD and can be overwhelming at first. I read it in pieces. Yahoo has a really good CRF support list as well. You may not want to join another but there are some very smart people there and not nearly as many posts as on Helen's CKD site.

I actually read that site when my other cat had CRF years ago. I will definitely go back over there and read the information again.

It's the best and also has the most updated food list available. The owner, Helen compiled and calculated the percentages by herself. Previously she enlisted the help of some of us. I was one that helped.

I have been reading through Tanya's site and have discovered that Sammy would be categorized as lower end of Stage 3 and some of the treatments that can help are: treatment for stomach acid to prevent vomiting, constipation remedies and/or control of elevated phosphorus levels

I have the stomach acid covered with Famotidine. I have put him on a low phosphorus diet so I hope that will help with phosphorus levels.

I don't think Sammy is constipated, but what is the harm in helping him out even if there is not a problem yet. I know I read on a few threads that others are giving pumpkin or baby food for constipation. Can someone let me know exactly how much and what to give Sammy to prevent constipation. Sammy is about 14 pounds.

Baby food does not help constipation nor does it prevent it. Pumpkin can but also can cause a problem. There is a really got site for this written by one of the really smart people that is a moderator on the CRF list I mentioned earlier. It's feline constipation.org.

Thanks I will check out that site.

I am also reading that it might be best to hold off on giving fluids until the cat consistently has Creatinine above 3.5. Sammy is only at 3.1. Now I am wondering if we should be waiting on the fluids?

We have been giving fluids since he was over 1.8 Creatinine. Why is it that there are so many discrepancies between the experts of a particular disease and the vet.

Tiffany didn't need fluids until her creatinine was higher. You give them if the can't stay hydrated with food and water. Adding water to the food helps just as much Also one test is not enough to base staging. You need to look at urine USG as well. It will be lower if you are giving fluids creative fluctuates like all labs do. Was the testing done on a fast? How many hours? That will alter results as well.

@tiffmaxee No the test was not on a fast, Sammy ate just before we went to the vet and the test was within 2 hours of eating. Since Sammy was first diagnosed with diabetes I have put extra water in his food. The more I read on Tanya's site the more confused I get. It sounds like giving fluids before they are really needed could cause more problems than not giving them.

One thing I can say, is Sammy usually does better after fluids than before. There are fluid days when he doesn't eat all that well but after fluids his appetite picks up. Why does it have to be so hard? It is almost easier to treat diabetes than CRF because you can home test. I hate not know what his numbers are.

@tiffmaxee I think she was referring to baby food squash. I've never heard of a problem w/ pumpkin, other than adding some carbs. What are you referring to?

We just can't seem to get a break. I was really hoping that I would come home to a GREEN BG tonight, but that didn't happen. I had a 30 minute discussion with the vet this afternoon about how much fluids we should be giving, potassium, blood pressure, phosphorous, CRD stage, different medications, and so much more. I was satisfied with what she had to say so we will be sticking with the daily fluid for the next week. I asked how soon we could see improvement if the daily fluid is working, she said as early as next week. So even though next Tuesday evening is already going to be cram packed with stuff to do to get ready to leave Wednesday morning for knit camp, I decided to book another appointment to get Sammy's kidney values check along with his potassium and blood pressure. I am really hoping that we get some good news so that I can be less stressed while I am away at knit camp for 12 days.
