Back from the vet. I got to see the X-ray this time. Lungs looked clear from the pneumonia. The bad news is that because of his weight his trachea is narrowing and in danger of collapsing. I am besides myself in frustration and desperation trying for over 5 years to help Fritz with his weight. My cat does not over eat. I weight every thing that goes into his mouth. 4.5 to 4.6 ounces daily.
Tread mill is on the way. I will post photos and pray-fully his weight loss. I do not expect miracles just tiny bits of weight to come off.

We need all the vines and prayers a kitty could possible get.

One part of the report was good but the other stinks. HUGS and hugs and hugs...

We have one civie that we've been fighting weight issues with for many years. He also doesn't overeat either....I get your frustration! GRRRR!

HUGS!!

Oh Deb, I can so hear your frustration with Fritz's weight. By any chance is his thyroid levels showing hypo not hyper? It is rare in cats but Bubba's last BW showed he was hypo and he vet said she has NEVER treated a cat with hypo before. When I ask what to do about it she said, nothing unless he starts becoming very lethargic and starts gaining weight.

Fritz eats less a day than Bubba. Bubba is 17.5 lbs and he eats 6 oz of raw food a day to maintain that weight. If weight comes off of him, will the trachea be widen again?

Thanks Lyresa:bighug::) have you been able to get any weight off? Fritz went down to 25lbs when he was first DX with FD back in Feb 2016 it lasted less than a month and back up he climbed.

My head is spinning in all directions. Fritz has not had a complete thyroid panel, I should have asked for that today what the heck was I thinking:banghead::arghh:. All I was thinking about was the pneumonia gone. I'll call the vet and ask if they will do it? Poor Fritz hates and I mean hates going now he has been taken soooo many times in the last year he growled all the way there today.
The holistic vet in Vegas did BW and said he was low but when everyone else looks at his numbers including the thyroid forum ladies said no way was his numbers low.
So I took him off the thyroid meds.
Vet said yes if he lost weight that would help with the narrowing as he said it was due to just plain fat:arghh:
Every vet he goes too just says look at that big cat and only offers that dry kitty crack to feed him. Even today the vet said where does he get the calcium from I said his food is prepared with all organs and bones shut him up fast.

We slowly got almost 2 pounds off him over about 4 years down to 19 but haven't been able to get any more off for the last 2 years. He eats NO hard food, not even hard treats. He's on the same low carb diet as Dakota.

Darn if I can remember what to ask for just a complete thyroid panel? I just called and faxed over Fritz BW from March 17 2017. He had the Total T4 Free T4 ng/dl Free T4 pmol/L

I am glad that you will revisit the BW and panel for the thyroid. Is Fritz real lethargic? I am hoping that you will get answers.

I hope you'll be able to find the cause for Fritz's weight. Thyroid is probably the place to start. Does he move around much at all? We're glad the pneumonia is cured. Sending vines for gentle, slow weight loss.

No from his bed to the front of the motor home to his food dish. I ordered a pet treadmill and will start him out at 1 minute a session. Iv'e tried to get him to play he starts to play them has breathing issues.:arghh:
Poor kitty. How old is Fritz?
We have the opposite problem with Rusty: we try to keep him from losing more weight. At one point, about 5 years ago, he weighed 17 lbs. (he was overweight). Now he's down to 11 lbs. But Rusty is about 18 years old and has never been food motivated (he grazes). His bloodwork always comes out just fine and apparently there are no health issues apart from his chronic congestion. We've even had him to an Internal Medicine specialist (twice).

If Fritz has breathing issues from playing, be very careful when putting him on a treadmill. 1 minute might be too much at first.
Good luck!

would Fritz be motivated by a string....?
I used to tie a long string /ribbon to my ankle and walk around the house.... putting one item up at a time to walk by the cat....
sounds like a little walking motivation would be good.

hope the thyroid test shows that's the reason so he can lose some weight.....

I'll try anything that sounds like a great idea:):)

Hi Deb! I saw you asking about what to ask for the thyroid panel. To get a full thyroid panel to see what is happening, you need T4, free T4, T3, free T3, and TSH. Remember, IDEXX doesn't do the full panel so you need to use Antech or MSU. Hemopet is another option that I use, but not many vets are aware of that lab. Hugs!!

If you are looking at all options, I would consider getting the IGF-1 tested again. There can be false negatives if the test is done early in the FD journey.
