7/11 Cosmo - back from the vet again

We haven't posted in a while as Cosmo is suffering through another bout of intestinal blockage. After 2 enemas yesterday, and a stressful morning, we took him to the vet and he had another manual extraction under sedation.

We need to give gastro food only (high carb) , cisapride and Lactulose (even though it is full of sugar :(). The vet, and we feel like his BG is tied to constipation stress. He had some nice blues and greens when unconstipated, so we will have to adjust insulin accordingly. We just can't manually extract him every few weeks.. It's not a fun life for Cosmo. He is so brave and strong. :kiss:

Tonight, he is tired and ready for a long nap! :bighug: for Cosmo!
 
Poor little guy. I hope the new food routine keeps him regular. As you said, you can always up the dose if you need to feed him higher carb food.
 
Lactulose isn't absorbed or digested so it's okay. How that's possible I don't know, it does not affect Ollie when I have to give it.

A lot of vets and people think because it "lose", It's sugar. If you Google and read you will find many claims it is non digestible.

Here is one

Lactulose is a non-digestible synthetic sugar which acts as a stool softener to treat chronic constipation in dogs and cats. Lactulose draws water into the intestine to soften the stool. It is particularly useful for the management of animals with chronic mega-colon.

I have heard that, but his BG on Lactulose says differently... I am not sure if the vet 'mix' is different from other versions. This one is orangey pink and syrupy.

That's possible your vet gets it flavored. Being in Canada you can get it over the counter correct? I buy it from Canada because I need script and vet thought it was sugar and not script it. Ollie needed it bad. One I get is amber colored. Maybe you could buy some from pharmacy direct.
 
Tina just started Lactulose - She just experienced what Cosmo had done, early yesterday morning, after 2 enemas then IV fluid overnight.

Our bottle of liquid is almost clear, with a very slight yellow tint and it has no smell. I'm counting on it being non-digestible!

Well it IS July! Tanya, you got to experience a true Christmas in July! I can get that;) as can many others.
It's amazing how many bodily functions can be taken for granted. There is some old joke about body parts arguing about which one was the most important. As the story/joke unfolded . . . the anus won:)
I've been awfully stressed about other health problems (human and animal), and feeling guilty/sad for not getting help for Tina sooner. I ignorantly thought raising her Glandex would help, and there was an ongoing family emergency that didn't help.
Our doc thinks/hopes it's a one time thing for her, but megacolon is a possibility. I always try to tell myself to laugh instead of cry - hence that comment about the rear end being extremely important.
