had all kinds of trouble getting blood from ear this morning, took a grab and a scruff hold to get a reading after E-7 error messages ... so that BG reading may be up partially due to anger and stress on both our parts

I'd already decided yesterday to give him as much of a break from testing today as I can -- ears are developing scar tissue despite all I do to prevent additional bleeding and applying healing ointment -- when he tosses his head and jumps and jerks just BEFORE the lancet touches him, the lancet LACERATES the ear instead of pricking carefully where I aimed it -- you'd think by this time he'd learn not to bob and weave, but there's no convincing a cat of anything he doesn't think on his own
 
at the moment I'm planning on testing at +6 == still guessing where his nadir is but that's probably not all that far off -- we'll see, also, how much time and effort I need to put in to supervise the contractor working on drainfield -- I have tarps down so they can dump the soil they remove, onto those, making it easier for us to refill the holes they'll dig

one of our neighbors just built a house on his lot, and scraped all the sod chunks into a pile -- I can take our garden cart over there and load up those sod chunks to put on top of the bare dirt, so it looks like grass (actually they had nicer grass on their lot than we have on ours anyway, ours assays out about 95% weeds, since we are all asked not to irrigate lawns in the summer -- with the exception of the week before the Fourth, to protect against spot fires caused by errant fireworks)
 
(sigh) drainfield is blown out and fixed, we can use our drains again, doors open to remove THOSE odors from the unflushed, unemptied conveniences, can take our badly needed showers, wash the accumulated clothes (though they said, space the loads out, not one after another) and dishes :woot::woot:

if Catcat made it to the beach or the shallows today, I couldn't tell, I was outside working.. his right ear has healed up nicely, left ear still pretty ragged

he was smart, lying inside on a cool floor -- I was out in the hot sun -- tomorrow I get to pick up the surplus rocks that were excavated, and go find sod to cover up the loose dirt, so neighbors don't accuse us of creating Dust Bowl conditions :blackeye:

nice people working here, local company in business since the 50s, final bill was slightly less than the original estimate :cool:

now I have a very happy cat -- DH wanted something cool tonight, I did too -- made tuna salad crossed with Caesar salad -- Catcat got the shreds remaining in the tuna cans (dog got the "juice" since I'm not sure it is free of carbs) :cat::joyful::cat:
 
Mowgli has been squirming lately a lot too. I think because he’s just so obsessed with getting outside. I think I notice him getting scar tissue as well. When I prick his ear I always massage but I don’t use polysporin every time. Maybe I should start applying it at least once a day.

I hope Catcat chills out and stops fidgeting while you’re trying to test his BG!
 
I've thought about giving him catnip before trying to test him, but unsure if that excitement (then relaxation) would mess with his BG on the test

mostly at test time he is excited to get FOOD !!!!! can occasionally test him without his nose in the food bowl, but that usually leads to clawing, biting, growling, hissing, and running madly down the stairs (him not me!)

though the problem could be me too, my longtime needle phobia kicks in and the sharpness frightens me, am sure he picks up on that -- though I endeavor to think "must do this, it's important" -- hate to poke myself, am dealing with a long scratch and poke across the pad of my left index finger -- hard to type with that out of commission

mostly-satiated cat sprawled on the floor behind me -- takes a LOT to fill him up, I just want a quiet night tonight, did a lot today, must do a lot tomorrow too
 
Sorry if you've answered this elsewhere -- do you use the lancing pen, or just free hand the Lancet? My mom is needle-phobic and she prefers using the lancing pen for that reason, because you can't really see the needle. Plus, until you press the trigger button, the needle on the Lancet is protected by the cap.

Also, the biggest thing for me in keeping Whispy's ears looking good is applying pretty hard pressure pinching his ear between my fingers, with a doubled-up square of TP that i use to fold over his ear, instead of the cotton round that most people seem to use. I very rarely apply any kind of ointment (Neosporin, Vaseline, etc). Of course, this would be difficult if you can't keep Catcat still for it. Whispy lets me do it because while I apply pressure to his ear with one hand, with my other hand I scratch his chin, which he loves.

thanks, I use the lancet freehand, don't feel I have the same control with a pen device -- and I suspect the click noise would freak him too -- he won't stay still as it is, the device would go flying ... or savage me worse than the lancet alone does at times

I use folded tp just as you do, and hold tightly while I sing a verse or two of song -- he seems to like that

cotton round only when I've hit a gusher -- try not to but what can you do when cat jerks or flinches?

I guess he's just either high strung or madly enthusiastic about eating ...
