AMPS 262, 11lbs 1.5oz, ketones 2.2. Okay what the heck. He's eating, not throwing up, no diarrhea, not being really lethargic. Not showing any of the signs I would normally associate with rising ketones, but here they are. And they're getting worse.

    Increasing to 5u this morning.

You might want to call your vet.

Vet's just going to say give him sub-q, which I've already done, and suggest taking him to the specialist hospital who are just going to give him a fast acting and maybe try to kill him with Vetsulin again. I gave him a drop of Novolin-R and will watch his BG closely. If his BG gets too low or the ketones continue to rise then I will take him over to the vet.

Justin if that 2.2 was on a ketone/blood meter, you are okay. The ketones start to show up in cat's blood at about 2.4 - 2.5 on a human ketone/BG meter.

Keep on doing what you are doing, pushing water and making sure he eats and isn't acting sick.

286@+1. Ketones 1.5. Nice drop in ketones, that's what I want to see. Really big appetite this morning, eaten almost 300 calories so far. Just going to keep feeding him as much as he wants and monitoring.

Is it? It is on a blood meter, which measures in mmol/L, and definitely a lot higher than I'm used to seeing. Recent readings have been between lo and 0.5. I looked it up and the conversion to the mg/l that's used on a urine strip is x18, so he was at about 40mg/l, which is right at "moderate". So definitely not critical range just yet but higher than normal.

He's playing too. We've got a little mat thingy that's got some rubby bits on it that I can fill with catnip, and he's currently over there smooshing his face all over it. Behavior-wise he's perfectly fine, if anything I'd say better than his average over the past year, which tended to be pretty lethargic.

There's a conversion factor involved, I posted it above in my reply to Bobbie. The blood meter is in mmol/L, urine strips are in mg/L, so take my numbers x 18 to get the urine strip value. So he started at 40 mg/L this morning and is now down to 19.8. Thanks for looking out though, I appreciate it.

I'm not sure I understand what that means. I've gotten readings below 2.4 before, usually around 0.5, sometimes 1.0-1.5. So what does "show up" mean in this context?

Okay I skimmed over the research papers and I think I get it, I think the wording is just off. If I'm reading this right, it means that ketoacidosis will begin at 2.4 on the meter. So the ketones are there, it's just not a problem until we hit 2.4?

260@+3, ketones 1.1. Looks like the ketones have leveled off, bit higher than I would like. Hopefully they drop down a bit more later. BG coming down fairly nicely, hopefully it continues to behave. Looks like the R maybe had a little effect since lately he hasn't been very curvy like he is right now, and maybe just needs a bit more to get things moving better. Obviously I won't give him any more during today's cycle, and I don't want to give him it at night, so we'll see what things look like tonight and tomorrow.

Going to give him a couple hours break from testing now since it looks like things are behaving for now. Funny note, I picked up for the tests and was like "oof, someone's a big boy right now." Put him on the scale and he's at 11lbs 14oz. Almost a full pound up from this morning. Obviously it's all fluid and food, just thought it was interesting to see that big of a bump. Good though, I'd rather see that big bump instead of the small bump from yesterday, since that most likely means his base mass in staying steady or increasing a bit.

PMPS 256, ketones 1.2. Ketones back up. I'm going to give him half a bubble, 100ml, and I'm going to give him some more R, .1u, to try and get the BG down.

Glad to see his ketone numbers are coming down. When Bubba was throwing ketones, he hit 5.0, and that was considered moderate according to the ketone meter. At 2.4 is when they are first seen on the meter for cats and would be considered a trace amount.

I'm still just really not understanding this. I've gotten readings on the meter for him much lower than 2.4. I log them on the sheet, usually they're around 0.5 or so. Just tonight I got 1.1 and PMPS and 0.8 just now. So if they don't "show up" until 2.4, when am I getting these readings? Also, from what I've read, the conversion between mmol/L to mg/L is x18, so a 2.4mmol/L on the meter would be 43.2 mg/l, which according to the urine stick is moderate.

So, the meters are for humans. When using the blood meter for ketones on a cat, they start to show up at 2.4- 2.5 on the meter which is a trace amount.

I don't think you need to do any conversions. Take the meter at face value. Another words, any readings you have gotten under 2.4 on the meter means no ketones for Sebastien. I think I may have been confusing when I said above, " glad to see the ketones going down" What I should have said, " glad to see the readings going down" because none of like to see the meter numbers creeping up towards 2.4
