The IBD was only suspected. At the time he had been vomitting pretty frequently, coughing up hairballs daily, lethargic, and then lost his appetite for the turkey pate we had been feeding him and we switched to beef and he started having diarrhea. Rather than going through the cost and trauma of a biopsy we decided to just treat it as if it was IBD with a diet change and some supplements, notably switching to raw food (lamb, turkey, rabbit, and duck) and doing the fecal matter transplant regiment from Animal Biome. And it seems to have worked since he's improved dramatically all around. To the point I'm not even sure he has IBD and think the vomitting and hairballs were just from a bad gut biome and the diarrhea was from the beef.Justin --
How was Sebastian's IBD diagnosed? Did the vet do a surgical biopsy?
I also have a (non-diabetic) cat with IBD. If you've not become familiar with the website, Raw Feeding for IBD Cats, it's a wealth of information. One consideration is adding a probiotic to Sebastian's food. It will help to regulate the intestinal flora. Before Sebastian was diagnosed with IBD, what were you feeding him? If you are using proteins with which he was already familiar, you may be aggravating his IBD. IBD acts like an allergy. If you were routinely feeding Sebastian turkey before you knew he had IBD, feeding him turkey now may be a problem. You would want to switch over to novel proteins only. (Gizmo was fed exclusively poultry before he was diagnosed. I've eliminated chicken, turkey, and even duck because it's so similar to other poultry) from his diet. He eats primarily a raw diet of pork and lamb with some ZiwiPeak venison. He also gets a probiotic and a small amount of prednisolone.)
We did, tried some s.boulardii and it didn't have any effect.I probably would have tried a probiotic prior to a fecal transplant. Gizmo was diagnosed via biopsy which I found helpful.
The FMT really wasn't a big deal. It wasn't a medical procedure like you might be thinking, it was just a twice a day supplement for a month. I'm not sure a probiotic would have done the trick based on the stool sample test results. He was missing some pretty specific stuff that it's supposed to address. And his current food does have some probiotics. I think it's the Stella & Chewy Freeze-dried Raw that's got a range of probiotics in it.S. boulardi is helpful with diarrhea. It's worked very well with Gizmo. You would want a broader spectrum probiotic for general IBD use.
