Nervous P. has been OTJ since mid-March. I was testing him off and on and found that his BG has recently shot up to the low 300s, which happened after I switched him from the dry food he was on because he was frequently throwing up. Forgetting to about his diabetes because he'd been doing so well, I switched him to a different dry food, which seems to have driven his BGs up and up fast. I started free-feeding on YA Zero on 8/24/16 and his numbers haven't really moved much since then. He loves the food. FYI, he has gained quite a bit of weight since his hypo episode in late February 2016 and could stand to lose a few pounds.

Question: Since he's free-feeding on YA Zero, how do I know that it's a good time to shoot him? Is there any other way beside taking a AMPS and PMPS? I was going to start in the AM on one unit every 12 hours of Lantus using SLGS Method.

Thanks in advance for your help.

well... since you have dry food.... you have to do the go slow protcol....

Will he eat wet food at all? It certainly helps if you need to get his numbers up to have gravy on hand if he'll eat it.
You will need some food item that will do that for him.....
Dry food is metabolized differently and slower to raise numbers and less predictable.....

You just have to pick your time.... and stay on the 12 hour schedule for shooting. And test randomly so you can learn his patterns...

Okay, I thought that SLGS was my only choice. He won't eat wet food at all. When I try to feed wet food to him, he either turns his nose up and walks away or he gobbles it all up and then won't eat it the next time I put it out. I have tried for months to get him to eat it, but he won't. My 17 Y.O. civvie eats pouch food and his
civvie half-sister eats low-carb Friskies. He shows interest, but just won't eat it. I have tried sprinkling Fortiflora on it. Maybe I should crumble up some YA Zero onto the Friskies and see if he'll try that. My DH inadvertently feed the gravied food the other day. I'll be sure to get some. I also have Karo.

Thanks so much for your help.

You should try to take the food up 2 hours before shot times so the BG you get at PS times isn't under the influence of food

And yes, as long as there's dry food being fed, you have to do SLGS.....TR requires a wet or raw food only diet

Thanks Chris & China. Hmm..., not sure how that's going to work. I don't see me wanting to get up at 5:00 a.m. or earlier every day to take his food away. Maybe that is incentive to trying some low-carb, wet food again, something that I've not tried before. There's a chance that his BGs throughout the day will be thrown off if he's eaten right before I test, right? How will I know I'm getting an accurate reading?

You could get an auto feeder that you can set to an empty bowl for those 2 hours. The PetSafe 5 is a favorite around here

The only time it's really important that he hasn't eaten is for Pre-shot tests.....any other tests during the cycle it's OK if he's had food recently
