AMPS 328
SHEBA dropped to 106 last night so I guess you would say that she has come off the bounce. Right?
But now she is 328 :(

I am hating having to pill Sheba twice a day with the tramadol. All other medications I have had to give her over time have always gone in the food. I am putting the Tramadol in the gelcap but she is struggling with me most times now and has started to bring her front feet up to try and get my hands away. She is normally the most gentle cat but she is hating this pilling. Any suggestions?

A question on the SS on the iPad @tiffmaxee
I enter all my numbers on the world SS. I can't find where to change it to the U.S. SS to make changes when I add numbers on the half hour. Do you know? Thanks
ETA Carolyn helped me with it and now have it sorted thanks

I hope Sheba clears the bounce soon. When I have to give pills to any of my cats, I always try to love on them afterwards to help make things better. That may or may not make her fight you with the pill. I also try to give a couple of treats afterwards to help make sure it went down. Callie was Hyper-T and I had to shove a pill down her twice a day. She would not eat pill pockets. She didn't like it and would fight me some days, but she came to her spot when I got the treat bag out each time.

Thanks Carla. I always tell her she's a good girl and give her some pats after the pilling..........even when she is a little horror! She gets a chicken heart after each pilling, ( it's part of her meal) and she loves them. Even so when she sees the heart and sees me kneeling there....she hesitates.......will I or won't I .........she knows what is about to happen, but the heart...chicken heart that is...always wins out.
I am always relieved when it is done. I would rather give an injection any day.

I can empathize on the pilling...

since Shadow was so "assertive"
I learned the last 3 years that I had to be even more so than she was.
I learned to be confident and dominant with pill time.
I don't know if this will help you or not.... fwiw, I learned to take each pill in my fingers, and thrust like I was positive that I would get it right on the first try.
She mostly didn't have time to fight me.
And I wasn't giving a treat afterwards so at least Sheba has that going for her.
Shadow got where she just took it, unless I missed, and I would have to do it a second time. That was the harder day.
Shadow had 6 pills each day ( at least ) to swallow and I tried to space them out.
But my point is,
that when I took that assertive positive attitude, I succeeded nearly all the time and it became a lot less stressful for both of us.

Have you tried making a kitty burrito? You wrap them in a towel so only the head sticks out. I got a cat sack for Harvey, as he could unwrap himself faster than I could get the pill down him. He fought it at first, but once I got him into it, he'd relax. Now he comes to me and even climbs in my lap, allowing me to put him in the sack. Of course, I love on him a lot once he's in the sack, before and after pilling. No treat - just love. Dawn was amazed at how easy it is to pill him now that he's used to the sack.

Are you freehanding or using a pill shooter? I find it much easier with a shooter.

Hope you manage to resolve the pulling issue for Sheba, it's horrible when they get distressed and start fighting.

I know pink is a pretty girlie colour Sheba, but we would all rather see you decked out in blue, how about it?

Thanks @rhiannon and shadow (GA) and @Tricia & Cinco for the tips on pilling.
6 pills a day....I don't think I could handle that Rhiannon!
The stress of it!

I do have a pill popper Tricia. I used to use it for Maxie and hated it, but I will give it a try with Sheba because I am starting to get scratched by her claws as she brings them up to move my hand away. She is normally very placid but she hates pills.
I give her a chicken heart to eat afterwards as it is part of her meal and I give her the pill at the start of the meal to get it over and done with and so I don't forget it.

@suki & crystal
Her other pills I can just crush in her food and she will eat OK but the Tramadol is very bitter and it makes her froth at the mouth. Putting in a gelcap is the only way.
I am hoping she will come off the bounce soon. I thought she had last night...........

I wonder whether you might try the g one - gabetin (?I know that spelling's wrong but hopefully you know the one that I mean). If it's not as bitter it might be easier. Why was it that you stopped the M (dirty word!) I thought you were pretty happy with the Aussie version of that for Sheba?

@Vyktors Mum
I was very happy with the metacam Serryn but it was causing her some tummy upsets .....well I think it was the metacam causing them......you know what NSAIDS can do. So I wanted to give her a break from it, and I needed to find a substitute. The vet didn't think gabapentin would be as good as tramadol. I might eventually go back to metacam...I will see how she goes with the tramadol. If it were not for the bitter taste I would be pretty happy with it. It doesn't control the pain as well, as it doesn't address the inflammation at all and I can see that in her numbers. But I have been pleasantly surprised that her mobility has not been adversely affected by stopping metacam. Still a work in progress...I am also getting her monthly cartrophen injections which help repair the joints and I do see an improvement after the injections.
Thanks for the suggestion.....always looking for better ways to help the pain. Next time I am at the vet I will ask him why he prefers tramadol.....he did say at the time but I can't remember.
