A sad end

    Some of you have probably been in this situation. An extremely fractious cat, requiring sedation for even the simplest procedures, a cat that is truly vicious to all but her "mom," a mutual love situation if there ever was one. Cat diagnosed as diabetic about 6 weeks ago, improved dramatically on a wet diet, treated for an infection, too. Short of flying to Austin, TX, I've done everything I can to help. Now cat is in severe DKA and estimate for treating is $4000. This cat belongs to my ex-sister-in-law, whom I love like a sister. She works hard but has a small income. She cannot afford to treat this critically ill cat. I can't afford it either.

    Crazy Polly will come home tonight to say good-bye. I am really heartsick over this and feel so helpless. Imagine how my sister-in-law feels.

    This is just horrible.

    Breaks my heart... My Charlie was on that path and treating his diabetes brought him 180 to the most loving cuddling guy... but just with Tom and I.... children... he'd scratch or knock down just for fun, when was a youngster... (Sorry Charlie)...

    I'm so sorry that your 'sister' is facing this impossible momment.. I have no words.

    Heather: That is a very generous offer. If I could, I would jump in my truck and drive down right away. My mother-in-law and nephew & wife are arriving in 2 days for a visit and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't understand my absence.

    That is so sad. Crazy Polly was blessed to find the one person she could love and who loved her for just who she is. Prayers for a peaceful passing, and for your sister in law's strength, comfort and peace.

    Update to Pat & Polly

    Polly the cat survived the night but is doing poorly. My sister, Pat, had to go to work and leave her. I've called her twice at work (a no-no, hope I don't get her in trouble) to offer help but she refuses any financial assistance and is reluctant to subject Polly to intensive treatment that might not even work, especially at this late stage.

    I feel like I am losing a patient. And I worry that I am inducing more guilt in Pat. So many of you have offered to help but Pat is stubbornly independent, especially financially. Even if she loses her precious Polly, a cat who is truly remarkable (ever heard of a cat that answers the door with her mom and bares her teeth and growls at the visitor?) and has a very,very special relationship with her human? I mean, really special. I know many of you have experienced that. I've had many cats over the years and only 2 cats have achieved that status with me.

    Oh well, I digress. But I am not giving up. I will be calling Pat in about 5 hours when she is home from work.

    ((Rebecca)) I'm so sorry that you all are having to go through this. It's so sad - is happening so often with the economy the way it is. Such a heartbreak - and yes, I do understand these "special" fractious little furry beings (close your little ears, Ms. Mittsi). Mittsi has never been known to answer the door with me and bare her teeth but her hisses can be heard outside when she's unhappy - and yet, she lays with me and sits on my lap and stares into my eyes. Sometimes those are the ones we love the most - for their personalities.

    My heart goes out to you both and I know how you must be hurting . I'm so sorry.

    I too am so sorry Rebecca. I wish there was something else i could offer other than that you and your family and of course, crazy Polly are in my thoughts and prayers. My biggest prayer is that whatever happens, little Polly doesn't feel any pain.

    We saw a new vet at our practice and she said it best. Cats determine what treatments they will accept. We can only make suggestions. I am so sorry.

    So very, very sorry to hear this...

    Those kitties that bond so strongly with only one person are my very favorites. Kasha is one of those cats. She used to hiss and growl and not let certain people come into the apartment or venture into areas of the house she felt were off-limits.

    It breaks my heart to hear that Crazy Polly and her bean are going through this ordeal...

    You're all in my thoughts...

    wow...that sucks. I'm so sorry to hear about this...

    my magic used to growl when he heard someone on the porch! he'd run to all the windows and growl like a dog! Cancer took him from me nearly one year ago...I'm still angry.
