Mitsy (who is in diabetic remission but has Cushing's Disease) had a seizure tonight causing her retinas to detach and she is now blind. The emergency vet gave her a sedative shot but it's not working as she's still panicking, breathing heavily and rapidly (shot was 3 hours ago). Has anyone experienced this? I can't even let her out of the carrier because she is panicking so badly and when out, runs into the walls :(

OH I am so sorry to hear this. I imagine she is terrified because she can't see and doesn't know what is happening, poor darling.
I would think your touch and voice would help calm her. Can they give her anything else to calm her?

I had a blind kitty whose retinas blew from high BP. This was in the days before any vets had machines to measure the BP. I went to a specialist who had a machine and she was put on human BP tablets. But she lived for several years afterwards to the age of 21, and you would never had known she was blind. She knew where every step was and how many steps etc and could negotiate the house and yard very well.
I'm sure you must be terrified and worried sick at the moment. :bighug::bighug::bighug:I hope the vets can find something to help calm her down. Please let us know how things are going.
Sending many healing and calming vines to Mitsy.

Poor Mitsy...she must be so confused with loss of her vision. As Bron said detached retinas can occur from high blood pressure. Also depending on the size and position of the pituitary tumour, this can affect the optics and cause a build up of fluids under the retina.

    From a human Cushing's site
"Cushing's and the Eyes. ... Answer: Patients with Cushing's syndrome may rarely develop an eye condition called central serous chorioretinopathy. This condition represents the accumulation of fluid behind the retina of the eye and may cause detachment of the retina resulting in impaired vision."

From a few articles I read (human cases) sometimes this can clear on its own...in other cases laser surgery is used.

    https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320606.php

I really don't know what the options are for kitties. It would depend on whether the retina is totally detached in both eyes or partially detached. You may want to see if there is a veterinary ophthalmologist you can be referred to.

In the meantime Mitsy will be disoriented and confused. A friend on mine had detached retinas...both eyes at separate time and he said his vision was wavy, blurred, colour flashes and doubled. Mitsy may quite possibly still have some vision, depending on the extent of the detachment, but it will not be 'normal'. Trying to keep the usual items...food, water, litter box etc all within a close proximity and showing her where everything is may help her feel more comfortable.

Sending prayer for you and Mitsy :bighug:

@Tuxedo Mom that was very interesting about the central serous chorioretinopathy. I had that in 2000. It appeared out of the blue and I had strange vision. Big heads, little bodies..that sort of thing. If that is what Mitsy has she will be very confused. Mine went away on its own after about 6 weeks with rest and removal of stress. Otherwise I was going to have to have laser surgery. I still do have a small amount of residual issue but nothing that bothers me.
I hope we hear soon how Mitsy is.

I was on this morning when you posted. I knew I couldnt help in any way, and kind of felt the outcome wouldn't be good:( But, I still had hope that your little Misty would pull through. I am so sorry that Misty left you so quickly. :( I went to your Instagram and just by looking at your photos it is quite obvious that you more than loved her. I know it has to be the worse day of your life :( I feel your pain and felt it immensely when I read your post this am. I have no words to make you feel better right now :( just know that it will take time to mourn your Misty and there 's no time limit. Love to you and your other fur baby .:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:cat_wings>o
