sorry another question,

When switching from one kind of insulin to another, i realize the new one starts with a lower dose, but do you also do a detox period of 12-24 hours without the old insulin before starting the new one? Does it depend on the brand of insulin perhaps?

We are switching from vetsulin to bcp pzi. Vetsulin wears off in 4-6 hours for us. Vet says no detox is needed - just start bcp when he is due for next shot, at the lower dose. Just checking here what you all think.

Thanks

Hi Jen,

As Chris said, there should be no detox necessary. The Caninsulin is an 'in and out' insulin so should be gone completely out of the system by the time of the next shot.

We're keeping fingers and paws crossed here that the BCP PZI works well for Mr Biddles. Hopefully he will get 12 hours duration from this.
There is a very friendly community on the PZI/Prozinc forum that will be happy to help you in any way they can. :bighug:

It would be great if you could enter some new data into Mr. Biddles SS when you can, too. It'll be interesting to see how he does on this new insulin.

Good luck Jen and Mr. B.!

thank you!! I would love to update our ss but with dosing at +6 and +8 it gets too confusing in the default template we all have, designed for +12 insulins.

I've got all my fingers and toes crossed this insulin works for us. i'm exhausted, he's unhappy, we're both tired and unhappy, and I hate seeing him feeling poorly and for so long now. he's a senior and I don't want the last year/s of his life to have such low quality.

starting BCP PZI tonight barring unforeseen circumstances.

Oh, I understand that problem. My cat has insulin on an 'as needed' basis, and the SS simply doesn't work for us...
(There is a TID/8 hourly SS available somewhere, but even that is no use to us...)

Hopefully, with the PZI, you may be able to get Mr. B. on something close to a 12/12 schedule, and life may get easier for you. ...I really do hope that is the case. (((Hugs)))

What dose are you starting on, Jen?
.
thanks, Eliz.
this is new insulin to my vet as well as me, and she says start with 1u every 12 hrs. that's u40, but I use u100 so that's 2.5 to me. sounds low, but we don't know how he'll react. i'm looking at dr hodgkins TR scale and debating whether or not i'd fare better with that. is there a tight protocol sticky on our site here for this specific insulin? going to look.....

how long has bertie been on the hypurin? is he happy? :)

I was on pro zinc and following Dr H--
In the end I consulted with the doctor that took over Dr H practice and she uses lantus and was not a big fan of Dr H method-
It made sense to me (Dr H) but it takes over your life and I have seen so many go OTJ on lantus --pro zinc lasted about 7 hours for us-
Please be aware that cats can go hypo on Dr H protocol--:bighug:
