If you live in the UK, have a diabetic cat and are currently experiencing difficulties because of the discontinuation of Insuvets Insulins it might be a good idea to contact the Veterinary Medicines Directorate to let them know of your problems. As you will probably know Caninsulin is now the only Insulin licenced for animal use in the UK. Cat owners generally have problems regulating their cats on Caninsulin because it has a very fast harsh onset, a deep peak and a duration of only about 8 hours. I have contacted Lorna Shelley at the Veterinary Medicines Directorate myself and received a fairly sympathetic and understanding reply. Maybe if enough people contacted her legislation might be changed and Insulins such as Levemir, Lantus and the Hypurin Insulins would be licenced for animal use in the UK. Lorna Shelley can be contacted by telephone 01932 3383230 and email l.shelley@vmd.defra.gsi.gov.uk . Let's try to do something about this! Mary x
