Leo is having a flare up of his IBD right now and his specialist is off today. I have a packet of Cerenia but it is labeled for dogs and the dose is 16mg per tablet. Does anyone know or have any experience with the dosage of this? Seems like 16mg is too high for a cat. Should I split the pill?

My vet prescribed 1/4 of 16 mg tablet once daily

Thank you. I think the vet that gave the med to me was thinking more of a dog dosage. Leo is a large cat but has lost some weight so I was feeling that the 16mg once a day was way too much.

My cat was 16lbs and it was still only 1/4 of a 16 mg tablet.

Jones was as low as 9lbs and was on 1/4 of the 16mg tablet.

My vet has Phoebe on 1/4 tablet up to 12 mg. She does good on 1/4th.

Thanks all- I think my local vet screwed up the instructions from the specialist. I'm glad I caught it. Not sure if I should start it yet as he only had one puke so far but I can tell there may be more to come.
You mentioned 1/4 tab up to 12mg. Does that mean you can give her a higher dose if needed up to 12mg?

That it what my vet said. I got 24 mg pills and cut into 1/4s. She said I could give her half of the 24 mg if I needed too. But we started at a 1/4 and has worked wonders. Good luck with your furbaby. It is so hard to see them sick.

1/4 of the 16mg would only be 4mg so it appears that I would have room to increase if needed. So far he's ok since this morning but I know how flare ups can come and go for a while. He seems to be wanting his old dry food back (sounds strange since he can't actually tell me this) but I can tell by the way he's clawing at the the places I used to keep his dry food and crying. Can't feed him dry food anymore so this will be a battle of wills.

I see there's quite a variance in dosages sometimes. Thanks all.

Just chiming in too! My boy get's 1/4 tablet of 16mg in the evenings but sometimes the pill is difficult to quarter. Vet said it's ok to give 1/2 tablet, so 8mg once a day. Maury is 13 lbs.

Good to know- thanks. We are trying to keep Leo off any steroids since his IBD is mild but I hate to see him not do well with the vomiting etc. even when he has a mild flare up. Not sure how long I will be able to maintain without them though.

Right now he is on PepcidAC twice a day. In between flare ups he is normal, but it will come and go. Due to his prior diabetes his specialist was trying to manage with just diet and pepcid along with his probiotics and pumpkin puree for his bowel movements. I guess I will need to consult with his vet about using Cerenia periodically. His endoscopy showed very mild IBD but his symptoms seem like they are more than mild sometimes. Even after he throws up he will go and eat 20 minutes later and keep it down, which is odd.

I give phoebe zofran, and cerenia. Zofran is for nausea, cerenia is for puking. It might behoove you to ask about both. Pepcid is for stomach acid.

The pill is so small there was no way I could quarter it because it disintegrated. I ended up giving him a half which is 8mg. Anyone have any ideas as to how to quarter a small pill without it falling apart??
He is on Pepcid due to his mild gastritis he gets when his stomach is empty. It has helped his early morning pukes along with setting the food timer. I will ask about getting Zofran.

Maybe you could ask a pharmacy to cut it. The vet pharmacy cut it for me

I have a very sharp pill cutter with a razor blade. Still tough but I'm getting better at cutting into 4's lol.

I have a pill cutter too but maybe I should see about a better quality one. I don't seem to do very well cutting pills smaller than halfs. I will practice. The Cerenia seems to have done the trick this morning. He's eating like crazy and no puking yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

There is no reason you can't increase dose if they need it. My Smokey started on 15 mg. Over time we were able to get it down to 4mg for maintenance. But at times had to increase up to 8mg.

Is there a therapeutic dose beyond which cerenia no longer has any effect?

I don't know the answer to that. Smokey was on it for 7 months and did well with it.
