Thank You very much I will certainly do that
If you are able to get the information, can you please pass it along to me? Things are so bad in my life now that I have to go without eating to make sure my furbaby has his food, insulin, needles etc. I’m so scared that I will have to rehome because I might just be homeless myself.
So sorry to hear this and I can certainly relate to your delema. If I ever find the information I will certainly post it. In the meantime just use the Special Kitty Turkey and Giblets for every chart I have found shows that as the lowest carbs. Best of luck to you
Hi Dr. Pierson,
I contacted Redbarn recently and asked for the TNA on their pate recipes because I am looking for a low carb and low phosphorus food. Redbarn sent me the attached spreadsheet. Not sure if you can use it in your food chart.

Reviewing the food list...
How does anyone make a decision with so many options out there?!?
Currently feeding my kitty (Rho) Science Diet m/d dry but it's crazy expensive, and I'm now wanting to switch him to wet.
He is not picky, and I don't want/need to feed him the cheapest food out there. I was fine spending $25/mo on a bag of quality food before he had diabetes.
What are the top 3-4 brands recommended as a starting point?
Kim, I would recommend that you copy this message, start a new thread in the Main Forum http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/ with a title such as "What brands of food are best? " and paste the message. More members are going to see your question and give your some input. Our cat was already getting Friskies and 9 Lives wet food, in addition to dry. We transitioned to Fancy Feast Classics and Friskies pate, with baked chicken breast and bone broth.
I'm confused on what percentage of carbs to stay under for a diabetic cat. My vet has always had me looking for food based on the "dry matter" carb content, which needs to be under 10%. She says there isn't a strict limit when looking at values "as fed" because that includes water and every company adds a different amount of water. How can I tell by looking at this chart which foods are low enough in carbs that they won't lead to a need for a higher insulin dose?
I was looking at Ziwipeak rabbit & lamb and emailed the company, who said that the carbs are 3% and as dry matter they are 12%. Wouldn't this mean the carbs are too high for a diabetic cat?
THANK YOU!! I have been utilizing your nutrition information for over a decade and it has helped the cats in my care tremendously.
Dr. Pierson, thank you so much for this bundle of research, for loving our cats, and for all of your hard work.
I just bought a few cans of Evangers Beef It Up because I read somewhere that it was lower in phosphorus. I value your research, and wonder why Evangers is not on your list?
Thank you again for such valuable information.
When I called Evangers because a freeze dried food I bought, smelled funny I thought, and I wanted a refund, they sounded so nice on the phone and sent me a bunch of coupons, but then they have had a lot of recalls. I never bought their products again. That was a few of years ago.. Maybe things have improved.
Any info on BFF Best Feline Friend?
It’s on the chart. Look in the b’s
Does anyone know if the Tiki Cat numbers are correct, specifically the Bora Bora Luau? The protein and fat percentages look switched when compared to the other flavors, so I was wondering if it was perhaps a typo or an odd outlier! Same as well for the Gourmet Carnivore line?
Here is some info on Tikicat and their new lines..
Just posted above
Here is info on Canada Fresh wet food. Can someone help with changing units of phosphorus? I think I just need to move the decimal to the left 2? Thanks!
Excellent! Ty! I figured it was low carb since the rest of Tiki is. Cc loves the after dark line. Except quail egg. None of my cats are digging the egg. Lol
yw! I'm excited to try it with my cat too! Hopefully he will enjoy it!
Thank you for all your hard work. I am new and appreciate you getting all this information together to help us.
Thanks for your efforts!
The food that I feed my cat is not on Pierson's chart. I use the formula below to calculate the carbs in my cat's food.
I was able to view and sort the Food chart. Fabulous updates! Thank you!!!
What a great update.
Very well done.
Good to see Purina Pro Plan Urinary on there.
I have been a bit concerned about the carbs.
Very suprised to see how low the carb content is.
I have been feeding it to Shadow ever since he had a major blockage several years ago. He has never experienced another one since. Probably dont need to even feed it to him. But why fix something that does not appear to be broken?
We only feed him a spoonful at a time.
One less worry now.
Thanks so very much for the amazing amount of work you put into this. M'row just got diagnosed with diabetes two weeks ago; I learned right away that he had to get off the dry food, so that's done. Your wonderful work here will be so helpful in guiding us through all the varieties of canned food out there, so head-butts to you!!
And we are very low income, so your information is so much appreciated from this point too!!
Thank you very much for your hard work!!!! This is going to help me out a lot more and I think I will be changing my healthy cats' diets as well. I also shared it on Creepy Cat Club on fb.
And btw, boo at Petsmart!!! I quit shopping there many years ago when I had hermit crabs (they are animals too!) and learned a lot about what is actually RIGHT for them. When I complained to my local Petsmart multiple times about the terrible conditions of their "crabitat" (no humidity, insufficient and broken+painted shells, etc.) and not a single thing was ever done, I never stepped into their store again.
Looks like there is a new Fancy Feast coming out. It's called Gourmet naturals "grain free" and has many pates. Seems like this may be good for diabetic cats that are FF addicts like mine!
Thank you Dr Lisa! My cat can only eat rabbit because of allergies. Do you know of a good wet food that is low carb rabbit only?
Thank you Dr Lisa! My cat can only eat rabbit because of allergies. Do you know of a good wet food that is low carb rabbit only?
I went to a holistic store for animals to see what can/wet food they carry. I was trying to pull up my list on my cell, I mentioned that my cell so slow & I was trying to look at a list I have.
The owner said “ I have a list, wanna see it”
She printed out and is studying this list!!! I was so shocked but SO HAPPY!
I pointed out the section where Dr Lisa posted about how bad some of Daves food is since they sell the exact ones in her store. She read it and then took it off the shelf .
She is trying to learn everything on this list because her new manager said she had to LOL! Yeah, manager telling the owner what to do
So happy that list exists! Trying to find food my cat will eat more happily...may try the Tiki Cat AD.
Thank you Doctor for the update! Sadly, we had to send Woody on ahead last Wednesday, but it was due to bowel lymphoma, NOT his diabetes. I donated to your link in memory of Woody.
I have given your list to "boutique" pet stores in my area and will now bring copies of your updated list.
Tucker and Woody's Mom
I was looking at these and want to try them but need to know the carb content first! They look promising.
Hope they are low in phosphorus to! That’s a problem I’m running into, not that many are under 300 phos AND low carb ...oh and pate. Mine only like pate style. It’s killing me, I’m paying $53 every week because all I can get in the store is Pro Plan urinary tract health turkey and Giblets that meets all the requirements. My baby has FLUTD & diabetes ( and 2 bad teeth that I have to somehow get removed)
UPDATE— 3/8/19 Now Skittles has developing Stage 2 kidney failure. Trying to slow it down
Thanks so much for this chart! It has been so helpful. We refer to it all the time to make sure Mugen is getting a food that he enjoys, that is low in carbs, and one that I can afford. I switched to the Friskies pates because the fancy feast cans are so tiny and since my other kitty (Toda, Mugens son) shares with Mugen I was going through a case of 30 in a week! Thanks again!
Michelle & Mugen
THANK YOU SO MUCH, Dr. Lisa, for putting this wonderful chart together. Newest kitty is showing signs of FD, so want to get him on some low carb food as I go get a new tester and strips today. Thought J&B's chart was a bit too out of date, but didn't know how much had changed. Also helping a friend with her diabetic cat. Good to see you on the board still. You helped us so much with Crash. Thank you again for all the time you spend helping our kitties. -Linda (Trouble and Slinky)
ever hear of Whole Hearted Cat canned foods? don't see it on your list
I've only just tried it out, but one that I've found would be the Koha rabbit au jus pate (it is a part of their limited ingredient stuff). I'm going to try to include the spreadsheet I got from them here, I got this from them this past February.
My cat Delgado is sick of WEruva unfortunately and everything else. Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals just came out and we bought the grilled beef with gravy Grain free. A little scared about the gravy part. Anyone know the carb count for this new one? Without this chart I would have been so so lost and all info is appreciated!
Calculated the carbs for the new FF "gourmet naturals" in gravy and they seem to be very low. Calculated the same new lines Pate cans and they are way higher. A little suprised cause with regular FF the pates are so low. With this new line the gravy cans are better. Which is great but hope I am correct!
I got a coupon for a free box of fancy feast cans and since its a "free box" situation rather than just dollars off... I was thinking of taking the opportunity to get the better quality zero carb stuff... but I can't figure out what the ones on the chart are or if they're the ones that are going to be in the store...
The chart doesn't mention gravy ones under the naturals line...
But I was thinking the same thing, usually "gravy" means high in carbs and usually "pate" even in other lines like the medleys, means low carb...
So now I'm confused lol
I think my carb calculation is correct they are gravy but very low. It’s their grain free line and supposed to take the place of the grilled stuff they all love so much. My cat likes it and his blood is good so I think it’s fine. Like the royal canin line for diabetes has gravy but is low. He likes it but does now act like a total crackhead about it so I think it’s fine haha. He flips over the grilled FF.
I gotta get better at calculating all that...
I also think I need a higher protein lower fat food than what we're using right now, at least mixed in, so the natural stuff looked more appealing that way too...
But this stuff is new and it's not the same as the "natural" line on the chart right?
I can't believe how many different types of food fancy feast has, lol I can't keep track, I got a medleys can for an emergency hypo but when i looked it up i had grabbed a "pate" medley that was only 4% carbs! lol
How did you get the coupon if I may ask?
When I sent them an email asking about stuff like why sometimes the same exact flavor is much drier than other times, and why the prices went up recently lol they sent me back a canned message and said they'd send me a coupon lol.
Haha yeah there are four medleys that are low carb. There is one of them I guess. Somehow I memorized all this. Ya the stuff I was asking about is brand new and all low carb. Just google carb calculator and find one that looks good and punch in the data. I think there is one on Lisa P’s website actually I used. All the info is on the cans to put in.
The natural line is just broth kinda and zero carbs this new one is like royal canin but not as healthy. It’s all like 5 carbs or something. It’s called Gourmet Naturals in Gravy.
Ok, just to see if I got it right...so none of the gourmet naturals are on the chart yet right?
And ... in the gourmet naturals line... the gravy ones are actually lower carb, at 5%? And the pate in this line is actually not as low as the pates in other lines?

@Jasper Blue and Jay ,
Here's a calculator that uses the info on the can. Pretty accurate to the list. Easy to have on your phone when in the store.
Yeah it's not too hard to just put in the info from the can..and yeah these Gourmet Naturals are new..got them off Amazon and tough they have gravy they are low carb. My cat likes them okay as he has no choice he is just not getting that grilled beef he loved so much. The carbs are low...and I saw an ad for them on TV earlier today. The chart is wonderful but hasn't been updated in a bit so the carb calculators are so good! and this food, though not the healthiest is one my cat has been steadily liking for over a month now. He likes the low carb "medleys" too like the primavera one. He hates the pates though.
Thanks! I'm going to have to pick a couple few varieties we stick to and make sure to check that they still match the chart with the calculator.
The first few days i was here someone was like , get a couple cans of the gravy lovers for medium carb and a couple cans of the medleys for high carb in case of hypo... Apparently the medleys have a 4% carb flavor! lol
I looked up the rest of the ones I had and wrote the number on the cans but checking with a calculator would be even better!
I have Karo syrup in case of hypo. Rub it on the gums I think. Funny about buying the low carb ones! I am really digging these Gourmet Naturals. My cat gets sick of stuff fast and hates the healthier cans. But he will eat some Weruva if it’s been a while. It’s a like this rotating pattern of sensing when he wants a change. Like us humans too I guess.
My crew like the medley primvera chicken pate. I wish chewy carried it. I have to order from walmart. Olive also likes weruva chicken fric a zee. Low carb and phos. Others dont like it though.
My cat has diabetes and urinary crystals. Can you please tell me what would be good numbers for each of the categories to look for? Thank you.
If you use this Sortable Chart, look for foods with protein minimum of 40, fat maximum of 50, carb max of 10, and for cats with kidney issues....phos less than 300
The key to crystals is water....adding extra water to canned food is one of the best things you can do to keep the urinary tract as healthy as possible.
The cure for pollution is dilution!
Try using a water fountain, must cats like movement to their water & will drink more
Also, mix a little water in the food, and CAN food ONLY. Dry food is the worst, especially for cats with urinary Tract issues. The more water the better!
Hello, I had a question about Friskies canned food. This chart lists most of the flavors around 5 carbs, however I believe they have changed their recipe to now include rice as an ingredient. Does anyone know if the values on the chart have updated with their changed recipe? Also, does anyone know the carb count in the new Fancy Feast Naturals?
The list was update in 2017. So if the rice was added after that, the list would not reflect them.
Can someone guide me to the most updated food list on the website or / link? I have recently adopted a new FIV kitty (Oliver) after Sketches passing last Oct. I immediately transitioned him from dry kibble to the Fancy Feast Classics (I assume these are still the go to). I noticed some classic symptoms of using the box frequently and more than usual trips to the water bowl. I couldn't believe it thinking could I really have 2 diabetic cats in a row? After changing his diet to the above mentioned, symptoms have improved but he is still high in appetite, BG and on the Fructosamine test (have follow up done today). I've been going by Dr Lisa Piersons list I downloaded a few years ago when Sketch was first diagnosed and wondering if it is the most current. If the tests confirm in fact the new kitty is also diabetic I will post a new profile for "Oliver" and start a spread sheet. Thanks all, hard to believe I'm back here but I surely thank goodness this site is available!
Here are links to the most recent even though it's 2 yrs old. So many new foods out there are not on this list though.
Thank you Paula....that is the current one I have downloaded. I just thought there might have been something updated since then and wanted to make sure I was using the most updated info.
am I seeing this right? Friskies gravy sensations has less carb content than any of the Hills diets? Wonder what their "prescription diets" contain.. SMH
Carbohydrates: Choosing diets with 10% or less carb calories is a good goal but, unless the cat is diabetic, sticking with less than 15% is also reasonable.
why higher carbs if cat is diabetic??
Thank you so much Lisa! This is so helpful!!!
Hi and thank you this is very helpful.
I have a 7 month old kitten who was just diagnosed with diabetes. She is under weight (4.5 lbs) and has only gained 1 lb since I adopted her at 3 months old. I am currently feeding her both wet and dry Blue Buffalo kitten food, our vet doesnt want us to make any drastic changes while we are attempting to regulate her blood glucose.
I am researching what would be best to change her to, such as a high calorie low carb food.....any suggestions?
Also is boiled chicken ok to feed to her as a snack?
Hi Joanna, Mighty attractive cat you have there!!
As far as the Blue Buffalo kitten food - not sure which one exactly you're feeding, but BB is typically higher in carbs - one wet canned food that I researched of the BB kitten food variety had 16% carbs - which although isn't terribly high - would be considered a medium carb - it's not really going to help bring her numbers down to feed her that regularly - and most of us around here use Fancy Feast pate's - since they're easy to find in most grocery stores, Walmart, etc. I buy the pate's for regular feeding and keep some of the gravy styles on hand to feed Luci when her numbers drop a bit too much.
There is no problem feeding boilded chicken as a snack - and I also buy freeze dried chicken, salmon and lamb to keep on hand for treats as well. I buy most of that from Amazon or Chewy.
Welcome to the FDMB! Hope your furbaby can get better with just food changes and not eventually need insulin. Food is a great place to start!
I have used all 3 of the BB wet canned food plus the dry food. She is already on insulin actually. 1 unit in the am and pm of prozinc, she goes to the vet tomorrow to have her Glucose curve done. Also has some GI issues, some vomiting (not for 3 days!!), soft but formed foul smelling poops and quite a lot of gas. She is skin and bones with a little pot belly!! So may have some Panreatic exocrine issues but not had testing yet. Our vet has NEVER seen Diabetes in such a young cat before.
Oh, ok. Without any indication of that info in your signature or a spreadsheet attached I didn't know.
I hope you'll be adding a signature and spreadsheet soon. Thank you!
