Despite several insulin increases, Mookie's high BGs are holding strong. His dose has almost doubled from the dose that was able to keep him in the normal range prior to a month ago. He does not have any of the usually high BG symptoms - he's drinking within reason (2.7 - 3.3 oz), he urinates x2 per day, his coat is nice and shiny, his appetite is good and he hasn't lost weight. He is a little less energetic than when his BGs were in normal range but not drastically.

I'm wondering if Mookie might have an infection that is causing his uncontrollable blood sugars. The vet has noticed a lot of tartar on one of his teeth but at the time it didn't warrant any further action. All his labs leading up to the blood sugar spike showed no sign of infection but I'm wondering if it was just building and infection set in a month ago when his BGs mysteriously spiked. He also broke out in chin acne a month ago, which has been very slow healing. Not sure if this is somehow related....

Just wanted to check and see if anyone has experienced uncontrollable BGs with infection of any kind.

    Thanks :)

My Rufus had some teeth issues (resorption), and a tooth that needed extraction that was causing numbers to be high. Look at my ss, he had dental done on 2.14. 4 different vets including a dental specialist thought his teeth were fine by visually looking at them. It wasn't until xrays and procedures did they notice the issues.

Thank you!!! Wow what a difference between before and after Rufus' teeth were addressed. I will pursue my suspicion and see what results. Great to know that it took some persistent investigation to get the vets to see it. It's always so disheartening when they just brush things off.

Yes, I was saying back last year in August that I thought he had teeth issues, but kept getting told everything looked fine. Good luck with Mookie! Hope you get some good answers soon :)

My Black Kitty is an example of how gingivitis can effect BGs. He had a dental in December of 2008 and another in May of 2009. In October of 2009 he went into remission and remained there for the rest of his life (6,5 years).

When a dental helps it’s amazing. It didn’t make a difference for a Max though despite an extraction. I’d definitely try to find out if there’s an infection or teeth issues. Good luck.
