My Sweet Tida is gone

It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that my beloved Tida passed away on Saturday, February 6th. She was 3 months shy of her 18th birthday. I had her since she was about 6 weeks old. She was my only cat, and my only child. She was a diet controlled diabetic, and had been OTJ since August.

The past 2 weeks have been extremely difficult. She started losing her appetite, and throwing up foam. I tried changing her food with anything and everything off Janet and Binky’s list. I took her to vet on Monday, the 1st. She was only 6 pounds now. Her bloodwork showed very, very high BUN and creatinine levels. She was diagnosed with CRF, Fatty Liver Disease and an irregular heatbeat. She was given sub Q fluids, and an appetite stimulant. When her thyroid results came in on Tuesday, she was discovered to be HyperT also. I picked up her tapazole for that. I tried everything to get her to eat. She wouldn’t. She wouldn’t even take the pills with the pill pockets anymore. I had to wrestle with her to get them down her throat. Her little body was just shutting down.

After many prayers and much thought, I made the very hard decision that we, as pet owners must make. I made the appointment with the vet for Saturday at 1:00. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I said goodbye to my sweet baby, and just like that , she was gone. My boyfriend and I took her little body in the box the vet gave us to my brother’s house. They buried her on the hill right beside my brother’s cat that passed away a month ago. They have a beautiful flower garden and many birdhouses with lots of birdys flying by. She is at peace now.

I want to thank everyone here for all the kindness shown me. Because of this board, I learned that diabetes was a manageable disease. I don’t post a lot, but I have been here every day since she was dx in July ’09. I hope what I have learned here, I will be able to pass onto other diabetic cat owners. Thanks again.

Lee, I am so sorry to see that you had to say goodbye to your sweet Tida. But, oh, 18 years of love - how fortunate you both were to have had that and how fortunate she was to have your loving care for so long and then the gift of release that you gave to her when there was no other choice. It's definitely the most difficult gift to give and while she is free of pain and young again, you are the one who suffers the grief and missing her.

My heart goes out to you - I'm sure however that in remembering the wonderful memories and love you shared, a smile will once again come to your lips.
