Roo Ella, our 8 year old female fur baby we adopted when she was 7, is retching (dry heaving) for a minute or so about once a week. Nothing comes up. This has been going on for about a month. Our Vet suspected it might be a hairball stuck in her so we gave her hairball medicine for two weeks. She is still retching about once a week. It lasts only for a minute or so but it is scary because its hard for her to breathe while retching. Roo Ella and her Mom and Dad would appreciate your comments and thoughts on this. What should be our next steps?

Is she possibly having an asthma attack?

Poor Roo Ella, sending prayers and vines for her.:bighug:
Is she acting normally in between bouts? Eating and pooping? FurBabiesMama’s suggestion is definitely worth looking into. If you can, try to get a video of the retching, maybe that would help with a diagnosis.

If you do a Google search for 'cat having asthma attack' there are several videos. You could watch a couple and see if it looks like what Roo Ella does.

Normally, a vet will rule out other things that can cause this like heartworms or heart issues. A parasite poop test and blood work was done on my Willow. When everything was clear, they did an xray and sure enough, signs of asthma.
