Hi there! Thanks for this list. Are you the one who contacted Nutro about the new formulas? Simon is OTJ (and picky) and was loving the Mature Health Chix and Turkey chunks. Big bummer that I can't get it anymore! We are trying to do lower phosphorus and low carb and there aren't many options he likes. I'm not on the board as much since going OTJ and I was just trying to piece together the mystery and the current progress!

I did call them and they were willing to talk, very chatty and friendly but She wouldn't give me separate numbers for the as feds so that I could bring them to the board and let someone else
do the calculations .... she kept doing the calculations herself and said she was using the "as feds" to
make the calculations and told me that the 4 new senior varieties were all 1%, 2% or 3%.....

    Do we believe her?

I haven't bought any yet to see if they do anything bg wise.... and test it that way. I might buy a can of each to see if Shadow likes them or they spike her.
And I really don't know how to do the calculations myself.... and was so hoping someone else would make the effort and help out.
    I just don't know what I'm asking so I feel inept/inadequate.

I bought 8 cases of that old nutro mature health chicken and turkey chunks right as they made the change and suddenly Shadow has lost interest ( imagine that ohmygod_smile  ) .
I figure it will keep for the next year and I'll give it to her little by little.

And we have a debate going on right now about the Weruva new flavors.... they might be higher than they are on the chart....
so those may be removed from the list here soon

Thanks so much, Rhiannon! This is just what I've been looking for.
    You said:

If it is the food causing BGs to rise, how much of an increase would be considered a spike?

    Hosanna,
I would run an extra test to see a food spike.....

make sure Martha hasn't eaten in at least 2 hours.... test....
give food.... and test again in 1 hour to see how much she goes up.....
that would tell you how much that variety spikes her ....

and it would be even better to try this more than once.. on that variety of food to see that it is consistent.

This is really awesome as I am new to the diabetes thing..
Of course my vet is telling me to feed Hills DM only so now I know of some other alternatives. Question out of curiosity, do you know how the brands you've listed actually compare to the Hills DM?
I have 2 cats, one is fine and trying to feed them separately really is not an option so I would prefer to not have to give the other cat the more expensive prescription. Also, they are both "seniors", is the senior food better for them or does it not make much of a difference?
We are still trying to get Jynx's levels figured out, we are now trying 3 units Lantus twice daily. His curves yesterday were 289 and 510.

I don't know too many here who like the Hill's m/d food.
Is it the dry formula or the canned variety?
The dry formula is way too high in carbs for a diabetic.... and the canned food I believe is 3 -4% carbs but I can find it at this very moment so someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
I hear the cats who start on it like it for a day or two and then don't want it anymore. It has by products, inferior ingredients, Carrageenan (a suspect additive at best) and it seems
that the vets who push it didn't spend much time in a feline nutrition class. ;-) Not that they spend much time in a feline diabetes class either.
You will learn far more here than your vet if you just lurk and read everything you can.
www.catinfo.org tells it all much better than I could. You will want to bookmark that.
The hills is expensive and not worth the price and you should be able to return any unopen cans ( and open cans for that matter- just say your cat won't eat it)

You are better off finding a nice low carb fancy feast variety that both cats like.
Try to only give seafood flavors once or twice a week . The best varieties are poultry but some us feed many different ones.

You don't have to feed senior varieties but they tend to be lower in phosphorus ( which I have that number at the end).
You don't want to feed the highest phosphorus values daily... so when it says senior... if often is alluding to a lower phosphorus. Senior cats tend to have more kidney issues
and high phosphorus is very detrimental to cats with chronic kidney disease. So it's good to pick foods that won't cause new problems years down the road if you can manage.

Did your vet start you on 3 units?
    That sounds high.
Why don't you create a new condo with your numbers and ask any questions you have about any of the process. You'll get answers for anything.
We are a very friendly community and we like to pay it forward for all the help we received ourselves when we were new to it all.
We can help you get a spreadsheet set up... a profile...
you'll be able to track numbers in a nice chart ( keep them in a notebook too in case of power failures or computer glitches) and see patterns in Jynx's numbers as to whether or not
you are on the right track.

And if you are feeding dry... and about to go to wet food....
we really need to adjust your dose so you don't experience a hypo situation switching foods. That dose would be high for a cat switching from a dry food to low carb wet food.
So please come back and create a new post.
Tell us what insulin you are on and if you are in the U.S. or Canada. etc....

Thank you Rhiannon (and all).. I have been doing a LOT of reading. This is a GREAT site to really help out us newbies.

The food is DM, not the m/d.. canned. We started at 2 units Lantus but after yesterday's curve results she bumped it up to 3 and wants him tested again in 2 weeks.
It's going to be a chore to wean them off the dry food but I will be working on that. My schedule does not really allow me to feed several times a day. The one cat (who's fine) doesn't really eat much during the day, she eats mainly in the middle of the night. Jynx (the diagnosed cat) will gorge himself on canned food and then throw up, so I've always mixed it with dry or given only as a "treat". He likes the dry but I do not think he's addicted, he LOVES the canned but, again, will gorge himself and then eat the other cats.

I realize that this is also a life change for me so I will do my best. I have not gotten a home test kit yet, will do more reading up on that. I am so very thankful for this forum!

    Essoh,
Please get a meter and start testing.... right away....

As we say around here, you wouldn't shoot insulin in a child blindly....
3 units is a lot of insulin for a small animal....
I'd so much prefer not to see you posting with a hypo incident and if you have one, it will cost you thousands of $$.

Your vet has given you a high dose and basically patted you on the head and said come back in 2 weeks....
right there.... I don't like your vet.....

come start a new post.... your own condo and let everyone help you help Jynx....

You're thinking of the Purina dm, which isn't that bad in carbs (3% for canned) but is ridiculously overpriced and is liver-based, meaning cats easily get turned off it after a couple of weeks. The Hills m/d is 14% carbs, which is too high for normal cats, much less diabetics!
