Jake's bg has been weird today. I tested him earlier and he was @ 44 , I fed him a little and tested again 2 hrs later he was @ 87. 1/2 hour later 89, 1 hour later 129. He had 3 units of vetsulin @ 8:00 this morning. It is 7:30 now . I don't think I should give him his evening shot???????

Re: Shoul I give a shot or not?

What is his BG right now....pre-shot ?

Based on those numbers, ( but we need to know pre-shot number for this dose)...
I would give either a greatly reduced dose (1u) or none at all.

I'm not a Lantus user....hopefully someone who does Lantus will come on soon.

I just corrected that. No, I tested him and it was 129, 20 minutes ago.

After being low today, he may be extra sensitive to insulin.

With a 129 BG at shot time, I would skip the shot tonight.

You may need to decrease the dose tomorrow. What was his pre-shot BG this morning?

    hi,
    a few questions...

Are u working with your vet with dosing?
    How did you reach 3u?
How long has your cat been on 3u?
Have you been testing for ketones?
I have to agree with the others, you may have to reduce the dose to 1u or at least give none, and see if you can speak to your vet.

Will u be able to monitor your cat tonight with BG testing?
I'm really concerned about hypo since you reached low numbers there..

Link for Hypo signs...please make sure you have this printed out

you may want to ask your vet if they are aware there is an FDA warning on Vetsulin insulin

I'm adding this link for Vetsulin users, a guideline print this out too

Jake has just been on this insulin since 2-1-2010. He was Diebetic back in 2007 but he got better . I found out the hard way. He had a Hypoglycemic attack. That is when I started testing his bg. After that night he never had insulin again. Now the vet says he has it again and his bg has been all over the place. Never low though. I am having a hard time getting a test now. He is stressed out now. I tried 3 times. No, I will not be able to test through the night. The vet started him on two units, but I gradully got him up to three after not seeing good results.

Well, I don't see any objection from others, but the consensus is that you may have to skip tonight Vetsulin shot,
and I would really recommend you call your vet tomorrow, show them the FDA warning on Vetsulin.

if you're not around to monitor tonight, this would be the safest thing for your cat until you have a talk with your vet.

I didn't see an answer, but has ketones been checked?

its basically a pee test...u can pick up a box (Ketostix) from Bayer I believe, at any pharmacy.

when your cat goes to pee, dip the small stick to catch some urine, wait 15-30 seconds and follow the colour chart in the instructions.

if u have decided not to shoot, please remove the 911 from your thread, I would do a couple of spotchecks when you can tonight, whenever you're in, and contact your vet in the morning.
