There are such amazing resources here and I have printed out all the protocols and hypo information, but wondering if someone has ever put together something stripped down and simple to leave for a house-sitter? I realize there will be info specific to each cat, I was just hoping to see if someone had already made something I could use as an outline or template.

I've already got such extensive notes for caregivers/house-sitters about feeding, my other cat on meds, the dog, etc....don't want to overwhelm them with the superbly thorough stuff here.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Just wanted to say that in addition to any written info that you give a house-sitter it is also very important to be sure that they know how to draw up an insulin dose correctly. (There have been some mistakes made.....)

For cats on a fixed dose, some caregivers have found it helpful to draw up some coloured liquid into a syringe to demonstrate what the correct dose should look like. Then the house-sitter can use this as a comparison.

BTW, I just love Alfred's pic. :cat:

I'd decide on a "no-shot" limit (unless your sitter can stall and retest and change their schedule as needed) and probably decrease the dose just a little in case Alfred doesn't eat normally while you're away

I wish I could write a simplified note for a house-sitter. :p
Oh my gosh, I know! You should see my notes from even before feline diabetes entered the picture! I'm sure it's overwhelming, but I always want to be prepared in case something happened to the housesitter and someone new had to take over. I'll also be out of contact, so that's makes it even more complicated.

I definitely want to do that....I'm going to leave that part of the house-sitter notes blank for my husband to fill in before he leaves next week. Since we've only been on Lantus a week, it's hard to tell where it's going. But I totally agree that I'll decrease the dose as both housesitters will be working and only available to stall and/or test mid-cycle on the weekends. Conservative is going to have to be the theme while I'm gone.

Thanks all, for weighing in and offering your thoughts. This message board is the bomb!

Popping in late to make a suggestion! The first time we had our kitty sitter in, we didn't mention when NOT to shoot, with pre-test numbers. Eliot had been bouncing all over the place, very high, so of course the first time he tested in the blues it was when we weren't home.* (She was well trained in testing and shooting, but not so much in numbers, you know? Not her fault at all.)

We've now added to his instructions, "If he tests under X give him his dose but leave some medium carb food out and notify us. If he tests under Y DO NOT SHOOT and notify us. Leave out medium carb food if you can't test again before leaving. If he tests under Z DO NOT SHOOT and give high carb food immediately, see notes on hypos, etc".

*I rushed home and he ended up bouncing again/being just fine. Of course.
