Stu 5 October 1997-28 September 2010

Our sweet little guy has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He went downhill so rapidly. Last night, after we arrived in NYC, he spent all his time in the bathroom, lying on the floor. He hadn't eaten much for 3 days. He was wobbly walking (and on his hocks, which he never had been before). As I wrote last night, Edward and I decided to take him to Hypurrcat for his consultation with Dr. Peterson even though we really thought that he was too weak for the I-131 procedure. Dr. Peterson thought he seemed very ill and sent us to the Katonah-Bedford Veteriary Hospital, about a mile away, to have comprehensive blood tests (for renal values) and ultrasound. He thought Stu would have to stay there for a day or two, to get IV feeding and rehydration.
At the hospital we saw a wonderful internal-medicine specialist. I don't have our copies of the lab reports yet, but can say that Stu's renal values were so high they were off the charts (BUN, for example, was 326) (it had been 69 a month ago—also too high). Most alarming, however, were the ultrasound results: a large mass on Stu's spleen, smaller masses on the liver, and nodules (?) on the kidneys. Also, stuff floating in the blood that suggested cancer cells. There were also things that suggested heart disease. In short, poor Stu was not in good shape. He was in a lot of pain, too. The normal exams, where the doctor feels the organs, made him growl in pain. (Edward says that he has made growling sounds when he picked him up during the last month or so. And I have noticed that he made groaning noises while lying on my backpack in recent weeks.) All of this suggests that he has been in considerable pain. And, to top it off, he has lost 2 lbs. in a month (and over 5 lbs. since April).
After talking with the IM specialist and hearing her explanations of what we could expect to happen over the next weeks and possibly months even if his CRF was treated aggressively, we decided that it would be best for Stu to spare him more weeks of pain. The very real possibility of multiple cancers was the clincher.
So we spent Stu's final hour with him, and he knew that he was leaving us and seemed to communicate to us that it was OK and that he wanted to be set free from pain. It was so hard, but I know that we made the right decision. It is the decision we would like to be made for ourselves when our time comes. He passed peacefully in our arms. His little body, once so big and muscular and recently just skin and bones, seemed to revert to its former state. His coat looked glossy. His eyes were clear and loving. It was very moving. We opted for private cremation and when his ashes arrive we will bury him in his garden, under the Christmas trees (or maybe under the catmint).
I told Stu that all his friends in LL would be sending him off and that all the kitties who have gone ahead will be there to greet him at the Rainbow Bridge. And that he could have a big party when he got there and cook some really wonderful dishes for all the GAs.
Farewell, Mr. Cat! 'Till we meet again. You enriched our lives immeasurably and will be in our hearts forever.

Oh, no, I am so sorry you had to let him go so suddenly. Such shocking news, hard to take it all in. I'm glad you could both be with him to say goodbye, and that his passing was peaceful.

 

Oh, Ella and Edward, this is just so shocking and heartbreaking....I am so so very sorry! Thank you for letting us know about Stu so that we can share your pain and sadness tonight, like families do.
You and Edward were the best of the best of beans to Stu. He knew it up until his last breath. You loved him so much and I know that you loved you just as much.

Oh, Ella. I am stunned. I am so sorry for you and Edward. I have a knot in my throat and tears are running down my face.

It is so clear that you provided Stu with the ultimate kindness. You knew something was wrong -- you 'd been saying for a few days that he seemed depressed. You are so strong for having made what was undoubtedly a hard decision to let Stu fly free of his pain. I know my George and Gracie will be there to share a bowl of whatever makes Stu the happiest - probably ice cream if it's Georgie's decision.

He truly did enrich all of our lives immeasurably and will be be in the hearts of all of us in LL. Travel safely on this last journey sweet boy.

My heart stopped when I saw your subject line. The tears have not stopped since. There was so much hope in this visit to NYC. All of us are just stunned and heartbroken. Stu was so lucky to have you two. Such a character. I suspect he will be invited as head chef to all the LL parties for those who have GA. No doubt he will accept with great pride.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Ella. Cancer is a cruel and evil beast. It takes our kitties from us quickly and silently. I'm crying tears for you and renewed tears for my girl. I actually came home tonight and lit a dozen candles to try to zen away my crappy day...one of those candles is now dedicated to your boy...the others go out to all of the other kitties that have recently left us. I am deeply saddened to hear of Stu's crossing today. I am sorry that a trip that started out with so much hope has had to end this way - but also glad that you were able to be with him and help him go. It is a gift ,this release, that we can give to our precious ones - though we do it with great sadness and with much heart wrenching debate - we do it because we love them so much.
Stu - fly free - and yes Tuscany will greet him and will be saying "here he comes".

We will all miss the Stu stories, the menu planning, his cabin adventures, thank you for sharing him with us. ((((ella and edward))))

 

I so admire your strength in seeing Stu through with such love. I can tell how much richer your lives have been for his presence. What a beautiful legacy. Sending many comforting hugs your way.

I know that no one here will know us, as my cat was never on Lantus so I never posted to LL, and we mostly just lurked on the health board without posting much until he went OTJ a few years ago. But a while back I decided to see what the ISGs were all about and I checked out LL. I happened to see one of Stu's postings and was captivated - partly because he looks just like my Ace, a handsome black and white tuxedo kitty. But I loved reading about Stu's many adventures, and Ella's posts were so lovingly and eloquently written, that I felt like I knew Ella and Stu personally. I just thought you would want to know that Stu's fan base extended well beyond LL. Amazing that a little kitty from upstate New York could touch so many lives, make so many friends, and be beloved by so many people from all over the world! I'm sure that the light from all the candles lighting Stu's way to the bridge last night was blinding........Stu was a special kitty and will be dearly missed by many. All the tributes posted here have been so touching. I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet guy. Fly free, Stu.

I am so very sorry to hear that you lost Stu. He was truly an icon in LL and will never be forgotten. I know both of your hearts are breaking now, but know that you gave Stu the best gift of all in letting him go. You respected him and there is no love that is more pure than that.

His garden plot sounds so peaceful and I'm glad that you had that special hour with him. He knew he was loved very much and felt safe.

Dear Ella and Edward. This morning when I saw your post my heart stopped. I just couldn't believe it and I still can't. I've tried several times throughout the day to come back and let you know how I am feeling right now but every time I tried I would start to cry again and the words just wouldn't come . I don';t know if they will now but here we go.

Your boy was one in a trillion but then so are his parents. Stu was larger than life on this board. We all grew to love this sweet brave boy and his MOm who were always reaching out to others with their love and concern and humor.I just want you to know how much I have appreciated you. You have helped make a very difficult time in my life so much easier. Tori and I will never forget the special meals, chicken soup and love that Stu always brought us when Tori hasn't felt well.

Stu was such a brave boy. He kept much of his last illness from you to save you from the worry. The shock though I know is so very hard to bear. I am so glad though that the last few minutes you had with your baby were peaceful and so filled with love. I know your hearts must be broken in pieces right now.. I know how much it must hurt. I can picture Stu though reaching out to comfort you and saying " It's OK MOm. I'm OK. Please don't cry."

Ella and Edward please know that there are so many people here who loved your boy so much and are sharing your grief. We are here for you and want to do anything we can for you.

Fly high and proud sweet Stu with you beautiful new wings. I bet you've got your apron and chefs hat on right now and are teaching all our GAs how gourmet cooking is done. Remember sweet boy we love you.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your outpourings of sympathy and for lighting the way for Stu's safe passage over the Rainbow Bridge. He is safely on the other side and has been greeted by all the other GAs, and especially by Alice, his predecessor in our household. Stu was a wonderful kitty. He will miss all his friends here on FDMB, but he doesn't want them to be sad. He would like them to have a big party and to think of him as they cook and eat and drink.

My heart is full as I write this, and I can barely see through my tears as I think of our dear little guy. I will continue to contribute what I can to the board and will visit your condos frequently. I want to thank everyone here for all of the help and support you have given us in our journey with Feline Diabetes. Stu was really getting close to the OTJ goal! If it hadn't been for all the other issues, I think he may have reached that goal.

Here is a picture of Stu in the Forget-me-Nots. We will always remember him as he was that day: vibrant and alive and so happy to be outdoors on a beautiful spring day.

I loved hearing of his/your adventures..your paddling, hiking, love of nature as well his. And you never let his FD stop you from your active life...you took him everywhere. He was a mountain cat, a city kitty and even went to camp. He rode better in a car than I do. (except that one dip in the mountains)
What a devoted bean you were...the best! My cousin once told me Hank had fallen into the schmaltz-pot when I adopted him. Well Stu must have felt the same way. He never wanted for anything.
I loved hearing stories of him watching the deer, laying in his catnip, playing with big bug, his automat, all the P's...and of course all the cooking. And WHAT a cook! Hank still talks about the great Texas style menu he made for our OTJ party. What would any party be without Chef Stu's cuisine? He WAS the food committee! I have continued to peak into his condo to check on him...but was not prepared for this. SO upsetting. Ella, this must have been so unexpected and hard for you. Breaks my heart knowing how much you must miss him... I miss him. I told Hank know about Stu and hugged him, grateful for this time as this reminds it won't be forever and never long enough.
You have always been such a joy and so wonderful. Your presence on the board has made all the difference to so many, certainly for us. You always checked on us and cheered us on making such a difference. I grieve Stu's loss with you. I hope time brings you peace. He'll never be forgotten.

ella, what a wonderful post of yours!
stu was well loved and cared for. you thought of him first at the end and did what needed to be done. sucks that it had to happen but the sum total of his life with you was wonderful and happy. i know you will remember him that way. (((Hugs)))
