Too late for Fitz

First, thanks to all of you.

By the time I got Fitz to the vet she said he was unlikely to survive even with aggressive therapy. He'd lost another pound since Tuesday, and she said she couldn't believe the number of ketones in his urine--he'd been clear of ketones on Tuesday.

He just went so fast. And yet, if I'd been able to start him on insulin Tuesday, I know he'd still be with me. If I'd grasped sooner what was happening, maybe he would have survived.

I was trying to learn about feline diabetes and treatment, trying to work miracles with my budget, trying to filter through the guidelines for financial assistance to sick pets and get applications...but it was all too late.

i had him euthanized this morning, and I can't say more right now.

 

I am terribly sorry! Don't blame yourself, you did all you could and I know he knew that

My heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your dear Fitz. Sometimes diabetes shows up as a secondary disease but it is the first thing we notice. Fitz may very well have had another major issue going on that wasn't giving out any clues. We all do the best we can with what we have at the time. None of us know the future. You gave Fitz a long and loving life and he knows you loved him. I am so saddened for you.......sometimes we just aren't given enough time to be able to help them.

 

I am so very sorry, don't blame yourself, euthanasia is sometimes the best option to prevent suffering. At least you know you can make that hardest of decisions when the time comes.

I'm so sorry to hear about Fitz. Poor baby. (((Hugs)))

 

When my Jericho passed I was also racked with guilt and 'what ifs', but the people on this board gave me tremendous support. Jericho was only six and he WAS on insulin, but there were just too many other things going on with him that he could over come, and then the DKA. They told me even if he had the 24 hr care he may not make it anyway. Those ketones happen so quickly and sometimes there is nothing you can do. Not all cats survive it even with aggressive treatment. It was not your fault. We do the best we can with the information and resources we have, and we love our pets. That is a great gift right there. Fitz knew your love and will continue to know your love. I am so sorry for your loss, and I hope you are able to find some comfort in your memories of Fitz and the support of the people on this board. We are here for you and understand/know your grief.
