I put some petroleum jelly on Sasha's ear and it helped me get a better blood drop for BG testing. However, I am worried about lancing his ear through the petroleum jelly. Won't that put petroleum jelly into his blood stream?

I have been putting Vaseline on my cats ears before pricking for years. Many others here also d that with no known problems.

I always use it on Calliope's ears and haven't had any issues. I just put a wee amount that I rub into the fur. I don't think it gets "into" the blood. The blood beads up on the top, so I don't think enough of the jelly could interfere with the numbers.

You only want to use just the very tiniest amount.

Only enough to make the hair look greasy...no big globs.

Put a tiny amount on your thumb, smear over the 'poke area'....wiping most of it off
    as you do so.
