I must have hit the vein and did the blood ever come out. And of coarse Emmy has to give her head a shake and I'm covered in blood droplets ya!!! And other times I have to poke her several times to get enough. Is there a skill set I am unaware of or is it just hit and miss?

Aim for the area between the vein and edge of the ear ... or be prepared to blot quickly!

If you have that issue again, quickly get a drop on your fingernail and test it from there.

Try not to aim for the marginal ear vein, as BJM suggested. Other than that, there are a variety of factors that can cause this (i.e. blood flow, ear temp, previous pricking site, vein vs. capillary, etc...). Here's the full list of ear testing tips I wrote up a while back when I was first starting out if, you're interested.
