So 6 years ago - kitties like Snuggles, Olivia, Orion and their moms struggled along on their own with little to no support as a condition known as acromegaly was considered extremely RARE. We now know that 30% of all diabetic cats have this!!! They do not necessarily have to use HI doses - but usually require more than the average kitty does! And typically there is a pattern to their numbers. Whereas one dose will work one time - the next time - there may be NO response.

Some other MAJOR fallacies that we all too often hear that vets give the moms/dads:

They don't LOOK like they have acro. It is said that the cat has to have big feet, head, jaw. Unfortunately - those are signs that come much later in the disease process.

An acrocat can't have low numbers and they can't hypo! some of our kitties have had numbers as low as 20's. Because of the way the insulin like growth hormone (IGF-1) interferes with the use of the kitties own insulin - thus having fluctuating levels of the cat's OWN insulin plus if insulin has been given - the cat can hypo! Home testing is SOOOOO important in these cats!

acrocats can't get DKA - SOOOO untrue. Several of our well known acrocats have been thru this. Jennifer's Spunky and Dale Ann's Snuggles are just a couple of them.

So come visit us in Acro/Iaa/Cushing's land. or over at catacromegaly.com. WE have our own little group on facebook too. Read our stories on our stickyhttp://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/vi ... f=12&t=375

And Christmas is just around the corner:
Buy one of our calendars. Help educate our vets. It's filled with wonderful pictures, links, stories. It supports catacro.com - sister site to FDMB and run by REbecca from right here on FDMB.
