Extremely playful this morning. Running around and attacking everything that moves. I weighed him though for the first time since August and am surprised he has lost a pound since then. I will have to keep an eye on that. He is a good weight now so I am happier with it but i don't want this to be a trend.

Hard to know why they shed weight sometimes. Hopefully, it's just because of a good diet!!

Just got back from the emergency vet. It was all my fault. At around 4pm he came up to me from having just pooped and he smelled bad. I decided to do a sanitary trim with scissors like I do a lot. Except this time i cut through his skin and removed a nickel sized piece. he didnt even complain! It barely bled (even less than the ears do when I test) but after 2 hours it was obviously still leaking serum and wasn't going to heal well.

My normal vet was closed but I emailed him and he got back immediately and said we should take him to the emergency vet to avoid infection.

Tiggy being aggressive at the vet meant they had to sedate him to suture it.. and also gave him a shot of cerenia and another of metacam. I know both are bad for cats but no internet access in the vet and no data meant I had nothing to argue with.

Anyway he is home now and is wobbly. $550 cost me for a stupid mistake :(

Those back end trims on wiggle bottomed long hair cats are so tough. Glad to hear he's better now. Cerenia is OK (it's Convenia you don't want). Did they prescribe antibiotics? Metacam also shouldn't have been given without blood work first. Their bad, not yours. For future reference, buprenorphine is a better choice for pain. Paws crossed for a fast recovery.
 
Ok good on the cerenia. They said the sutures were under the skin and should dissolve so he should be good. They seemed to think the cerenia was enough for any infection otherwise.

What should I be watching for in terms of metacam issues? He had bloodwork done fairly recently and was fine.

He is totally spaced right now. Could barely walk when he got home but ate some food and sat down. I put him in his favourite spot beside me and he hasn't moved an inch even to settle properly and is staring into space.. This isn't how he expected his night to go. Or mine!!

Cerenia is an anti-nausea med, so I think you do mean Convenia, which is an AB injection that is supposed to last 2 weeks.

For the Metacam...I don't know much, but I do know it has an FDA black box warning because it can cause kidney failure in cats. I don't know how great that risk is, though...but it is black boxed.

I assume the sedatives are making the poor little guy wobbly and spacy. Sending tons of healing and feel better vines your way!
 
Cerenia also has anti-inflammatory properties - my civie got it for his cystitis. If Tiggy's kidneys are OK, Metacam could be OK. Everytime I see a new vet, I write, No Metacam/No Convenia on the new patient paperwork. They are both so often the first things offered in Canada. :YMSIGH:

It was definately Convenia. It's on the bill. Drat it. Now I am scared. nailbite_smile .. Did I just make a major mistake???
 
Don't be scared. While it is not ideal, many cats do get Convenia and are fine with it. You know enough to be aware about it. I personally have no experience, so maybe you should use the question mark icon so others who have used Convenia can offer you support.
 
If he was going to have had an allergic reaction to the Convenia, chances are Tiggy would have had a reaction by now. Just don't have them give it again. Some drugs take a 2nd dose for the allergic reaction to occur.

You must have been beside yourself.
 
Again I don't have first-hand experience, but I'm pretty sure that if you were going to see a reaction, it would have happened pretty quickly.
 
It would happen pretty fast. Gracie had a Convenia shot (without my permission) when it first came out several years ago and she went into anaphylactic shock within 5 mins of us leaving the clinic ...which was about 15 mins after the shot.

I hope all will be ok with Tiggy.
 
I hope so. So far he seems ok, just totally spaced out. Touch wood he will be fine but I will be keeping a real close eye on him.

He ate well when he got back though so I should be ok to shoot him tonite.

Accidents happen. Sounds like something I would do.

If I know Tiggy he will do fine with this knowledge base of eyes on the case.

Sorry to hear about the fur shot! I am sure he will recover soon.

Tiggy is acting really odd. Never seen him this spaced before. But the vet did say she brought him out only halfway.. And I guess with prior anaestheia he would stay at the vet longer before we brought him home.

He did jump off the sofa and staggered and fell his way slowly into the kitchen when he heard the treats. I gave him one and then he lay down and peed on the floor where he lay. I picked him up and brought him back onto the couch where he is lying staring into space not moving. I hate this .. It's been three hours now since the sedation and I am worried out of my mind.. The effects of sedation, the metacam and the convenia all scare me silly....

Thanks guys. Your support means so much to me.

Tiggy has just got up and is begging DH for treats. He still isn't right but it's a step in the right direction for sure.
 
Lots of get-better vines for Tiggy tonight. I know how scared you must be, but now you just have to be strong and calm for Tiggy. He'll be OK soon.

how nervewracking! i'd think if he continues improving, i wouldn't worry too much, but if he begins staggering more or acts more spacey than before, i'd call the vet asap. the issue with metacam is dose related, and MOST of the time it has to do with multiple doses of it. so hopefully tiggy is ok with it. I took punkin to one vet for accupuncture and that vet gave his own cat metacam. i know some of the high dose kitties that used it because it was the only thing that brought relief. the dose matters.

at least they were halfway right with the convenia - they gave it for a skin issue, which is what the AB was developed for. i suspect you're ok with it too. the risk with it is allergic reaction, and because it lasts 2 weeks in the system if you have an allergic reaction that's a long time to deal with it.

eta - i take anya, my norwegian forest cat kitty, to the groomers for a "Brazilian" every couple of months for that little hygiene problem. just a thought for the future. she only charges me $10 for it.
 
I thought about a groomer but Tiggy hates strangers and vets, and I suspect also a groomer would have major issues with him. They would need to sedate him too! The only people that can get that close to him are us, and although he likes getting brushed, dealing with mats etc gets him upset even with us. I am now too worried though to do that myself now so I think he might need to live with it.

At least the emergency vet cleaned him up a bit - should last him a while I hope! Perhaps I can somehow keep on top of it now so it doesn't get matted again - bum brushing?

when we first had a dog that was a cocker mix i bought a kit that included a shaver. i've thought about doing that again, but anya is easy at the groomer's and i like chatting with her, so i just take anya in. they do sell hair grooming kits - you might be able to just give a quick buzz cut. hehehe

Keep him well hydrated as the Metacam is excreted through the kidneys.

Pick up a small mat cutter from a pet supplies store - PetCo has one a like as it can be used right or left handed. It is like a comb with curved teeth. The inside edge of the teeth is sharb and will cut through mats. Hold any mat with your fingers between the skin and the mat cutter.

Used as a grooming comb, a mat cutter also helps to thin the fur in long haired cats.
