Thank you for the visits and comments yesterday. To answer a couple questions from yesterday:

Wendy: River isn't an acrocat, but that's a good thing to check. After River was diagnosed and was for months insulin-resistant, this is one of the things I asked my vet about. I will for sure be able to find another regular veterinarian. I have contacted Randi, who is the contact person here in Montreal, and she recommended her vet. The person who ignored the hypo and said it must be a brain tumor is one of the specialists in internal medicine at the emergency hospital where River stayed for 6 days when he collapsed with DKA.

Dr. X
DVM, IPSAV, D.E.S., Dipl. ACVIM
Dr. X completed her DVM at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Université de Montréal in 1990. She then completed her internship development training in applied veterinary sciences (IPSAV) and a residency in internal medicine (DES) at the same institution. From late 1993 to 1998, she worked as a lecturer at the Faculty and then made the transition to private practice from 1998-1999 to work at the Centre vétérinaire DMV. Thereafter, she worked as a clinician in internal medicine at the Faculty from 1999 to 2007. She graduated from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in 1998. She also holds a specialty certificate in internal medicine from the OMVQ since 1995. Her fields of interest are feline medicine in all its forms, endocrinology and gastroenterology as well as all aspects of endoscopy. She has worked at the HVRS (Hôpital Vétérinaire Rive-Sud) since July 2007.

This doctor said he couldn't have had a hypo; it must be a brain tumor. Later that day another internal medicine specialist called me and said it *was* a hypo, and he was having a Somogyi (he was having a bounce and was high), and I should stop giving my cat insulin for 3 cycles, as this would "give him a reset".

Since then, Lantus Land has been my lifeline.

Pam: B12 shots, from what I'm reading, are used for panc and IBD.

Mariko: Thanks, yes, I know about blood tests for B12 levels. I wanted to do exactly what you've mentioned, to see if it would help, since it's possible that it might.

I'm going to copy River's labs to his SS, for extra information.

Have a great day, everyone!

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407

Good Moring ~O)
Thanks Lara for the B-12 info. Mostly just curious.
Hope River comes down for you today and has a nice long surf.
Happy Caturday!

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407

I hope River clears the bounce soon and things work out with the new vet. It's amazing how clueless some vets can be.

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407 +2:358 +4:259

Thank you, Pam and Carla. He's coming down nicely and is snoozing with is brother.
Seeing those lovely greens and blues, and how quickly he recovers from a bounce, makes me happier than I've been in ages. His last two weeks have been great.

Pam, if you search for "cats pancreatitis IBD B12" you'll find a fair amount of info that suggests that B12 injections can be helpful. And there's lots of anecdotal evidence. I don't know if River's going to have a sensitive tummy for ever - and he doesn't vomit or have diarrhea - he just has a gurgly tummy sometimes and I can tell that when he gets up and changes position often, or finds it more comfortable to sleep on the floor, that he's having some stomach discomfort.

What I believe caused his diabetes and pancreatitis (and now in retrospect I think he had the panc first), is that he developed an allergy to the beef raw diet that I'd made for him his entire life. I discovered that beef can be an allergen for cats. I've been a raw feeding evangelist since 1998, so this was a huge surprise to me. Now that he's getting Wellness no grain he's doing so much better.

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407 +2:358 +4:259

Bouncing has broken! Well done, Mr. Stevens.  Nice and easy though, so Mr. Liver doesn't get all a quiver. Have a great day, Lara!

Hi Lara,

Hope River comes visit the blue waters today! Love River's profile, the stories are heartwarming, pictures are adorable! Even River's person!

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407 +2:358 +4:259

Easy does it River. Let's see if you can SLOWLY do a rainbow today.

I was curious about the vet school because the old fashioned vet at the clinic we go to had some training in Montreal. Scary that an endocrinoligist vetty doesn't believe it was a hypo. I was just looking at the early days in your SS, looks like some scary times. Glad you found us.

Both my kitties are on raw, but not beef. Good to see you found a food that works for River.

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407 +2:358 +4:259

Hi Lara! For some reason I must have never looked at River's profile before (awwww-worthy pics, Sammy in the sink is priceless).

What does it mean when you say x-rays for River "showed donuts"? I know we're Canucks and all, but I don't think we're talking Timmies here . . . I'm assuming some sort of respiratory problem?

Re: 9/14 River AMPS:407 +2:358 +4:259

Hi Lara, not sure we've visited you before, but I love River's name - our Grandson shares the same!!!

Looks like River's coming down nicely off his bounce so far - congratulations!

Sadly it seems to me there's no shortage of bad vets with bad advice - no matter where you live!

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

Whoa - PMPS is 65. I guess I should shoot this and carb him if needed?
This is low. I'm thrilled but a tad scared.
If any advice-givers are around, please let me know. I'd be more comfortable pushing the plunger with your blessing ;-)

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

Since you don't know if he is still trending back down or on the way back up, I'd delay (without feeding) and test again in 1/2 hour to see where he is going.

River - I didn't mean do the rainbow that way.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

OK, thanks Wendy. I'll do that, and I'll let him know you have a clarification!
Silly me, I thought it was safe to go out this afternoon.
Now where did I put those pants? You know the ones.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

While we are waiting for the clock to tick, a few questions. Do you have plenty of strips, HC and are able to monitor tonight? Just a bit paranoid about that now, a few nights ago someone shot in the 50's with 5 strips. nailbite_smile Thank goodness it's the weekend, so you should be able to unwind the stall by Monday as long as you don't have to stall too long.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

We're loaded for bear here, Wendy. Thank you for checking!
And I have lots of BBC history documentaries to watch...zzz...

Shudder. I think that's going to become the stuff of legends around here.

Hi Lara - just popping in to say that Papaya had a very similar day as River, dropping from a high AMPS to her PMPS of 69. So depending on what numbers you see next, if you do shoot I will be around too keeping an eye on my drama queen!

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

Should be about time for that test. Detail, but if we haven't shot yet, our subject line is PMBG (blood glucose) instead of PMPS. Also let's people know you haven't shot yet.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65 - Stall or shoot?

Glad to see Wendy and Amy got you covered. Come on River....let your mommy shoot low to keep you low!!

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMPS 52 still stalling

How long can you stall and get back on schedule "if" you shoot tomorrow 12 hours from tonight?

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

It's not a concern. I can shoot whenever he is ready and work backwards timewise as needed.
So I keep testing every 30 minutes until he comes up, is that correct?

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

Yes....if he comes up. Long, long ago, I had to stall Gracie who was 45 at PMBG and she didn't come up within two hours so I had to skip.

Wendy makes a very good point that you didn't know where he had been during the day so on days like this when he's high but clearing, it's always a good idea to get a +10. But, if you look at 9/1, he had a very similar daytime cycle and you stalled three hours at night. I'm not sure what you shot; it looks like you shot a 77. There's really no difference between a 77 and a 65. For someone with your data, who tests, who knows her cat and how to get his BG up, who has supplies, etc., I'm a fan of shooting on time and feeding and taking advantage of that overlap/carryover.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

Yes, I was overconfident today and left the house for the first time in weeks to do errands. I'm not kidding! And of course that's when this happens... ohmygod_smile
If he's looking like he's coasting or rising, I'd really like to shoot him, as I'd like to keep him safely low to prevent high bouncing.
Anyway, another test to come in a few minutes.

That is really good advice to remember. That's why I shot Papaya's 69 tonight without blinking, because I had a +8 in the 40s so though it was low I knew for sure that it wasn't still going down. I wish I could claim credit for having really good strategy on that, but it was just kind of random because that's when I came home and I wanted to see where she'd gotten to!

(That video is amazing - the footwork! and so upbeat, definitely a good sort of thing to watch when you're anxious! I figured I had a double-header CFL night lined up but Winnipeg is getting buried by the only team in the league currently as bad as they are, so it's getting a bit painful to watch  )

Can't wait for the next test . . . and glad Marje and Sienne are here :-D

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

I totally agree about the +10. If you look at my spreadsheet (she said defensively ;-) ) It's all +10s.
Today is the one day I don't have one. ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile

Sorry about Winnipeg! Need I tell you how we feel here about the Habs?

Glad you're all here.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

If he is coasting, I'd shoot and feed. And of course, +1 to start.

I understand on going out and thinking you have time. We've had this happen so we get an out the door and an in the door.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

Note to self: will do in future.
No worries, Marje, I tend not to repeat mistakes. I make totally new ones.

He's 58 now, so I'm going to feed, shoot, and test, feed, test, feed, and so on.

You know what I'm waiting for. Ahem.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

River is a good boy to save this cycle for the weekend. :-D

I do believe that's the blessing you're looking for

And your +10s . . . your testing puts mine to shame!

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:65, PMBG 52 haven't shot

It's hardly a mistake, Lara. :-D
And whether you can stay at home with him afterwards is a BIG factor, so I'm really glad he's giving you this cycle when you can.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

We
licking-cat-smiley-emoticon.gif
you back.

And here's what you were waiting for:

You earned them!!

Ok...please get a not later than +1 ok and if you are a little nailbite_smile, it never hurts to do a +.5 especially if you do not have faith he will get a +1 spike.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

Congrats on the BOS award  You earned it!

I am definitely joining the party tonight, since I just got a +3 of 51. Thank goodness it's the weekend.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

No worries, there's going to be a +1 and that's just the start. River is sitting right here with me being as cuddly as all get-out. Bwah ha ha. Come here, my little pincushion.

I am truly honoured and humbled to accept these lovely new, um...earrings!
I'm sorry but this popped into my head.

Amy, nice of Papaya to slip that in.
Here's our theme song tonight.

Ooh EEEEEEEEEEEEEE baby. Just like Ozy a few days ago.

What time is it there? oh, Eastern. So, easy for me to be around when it is late for you. Let me know if you need company.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

It's 9 bells, and all is well.
I am indeed so glad it's the weekend. Mariko pointed out how considerate this is of my cat. It's true!
Thank you, Donaleen, you're a doll!

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

Don't give Papaya any ideas with the Don't Stop Me Now   I'm already doing high carb here

Surf it safely, River!

And HEY today's condo eminently qualifies to be tagged with a green smiley. I just about couldn't find it since I was scanning for  !

Re: 9/14 River PMPS: 58

Amy, I'm superstitious about the smiley. The last time I did that, the insulin gods frowned on me. So despite having WON THE BOS AWARD (*cough*), I'm staying humble.

Re: 9/14 River PMPS:58 +1:56

I think this portends of an active cycle to come.

I'd go ahead and feed him a couple generous tsp of LC if he is carb sensitive. If not, you might want to give him a little MC so he's got room to onset without dropping to the 40s this early in the cycle.

And +2 please. Thanks!! I have to do Gracie's insulin in 30 mins so I'll be back ASAP.
