Sorry I never got to post an update yesterday. We had a lot going on – and I ended up passing a kidney stone last night and it took a long time to pass it.

Jupiters appt went very well. They looked at the incision and said it looks very good. They removed the staples. They want Jupiter to keep using the cone and crate at night for another 3 days because at the bottom of the incision there is a small area that is not completely healed yet.

He also recommended we keep using the crate at night for a few days after that, atleast a week. He said that eventually Jupiters muscles in the back leg will grow stronger and its best if he gradually goes back to normal physical activity. Since he is overweight, Jupiter may have a hard time jumping until his leg grows stronger (since it will be doing the work of 2 legs now) and we wouldn’t want him to try to jump and fall and hurt himself – so we will still be restricting his activity at night using the crate and we will watch and help him if needed during the day. Within the next few weeks he should be able to do all the things he used to be able to do like jumping and running and playing – but we will take it slow.

They checked him and said he didn’t seem constipated and they said since his appy is improving that should help his bowel movements become regular again.

The vet said the remaining cancer cells that were in the wound had started to spread in the wound and that’s why it suddenly stopped healing and started getting worse. He said absolutely 100%, amputation was the right decision.
They said Jupiter does not need any more follow-up appointments there; he will only need follow-ups (and chemo treatments) with the oncologist.

The oncologist would like Jupiter to start the chemo as soon as possible. I would like Jupiter to have a few more days to heal before starting any treatment.

I am still unsure about how I will pay for all the chemo treatments. We have atleast enough to get the chemo treatments started which is a huge burden lifted. One less thing to worry about! And one big step in the right direction in this long journey Jupiter has been on to get back to living a healthy and happy life!
----A special thank you to Sherry & Squirt - Sherry contacted me and sent us a donation to pay for his blood test and first chemo treatment!!! I was so worried about how we could possibly afford even a single treatment, so this is a HUGE relief knowing we can get his chemo started. We will be talking to the oncologist within the next few days and hopefully be scheduling his first chemo treatment within the next week.

Thank you all, for helping us through these past few months. Thank you all, for helping me to save Jupiters life. It is so amazing and a big relief to hear that he is finally healing properly. When I heard his vet say "he wont need anymore followup appts other then with his oncologist" I was so happy.

This was a big step in the process of getting Jupiter back to being healthy and living happy. We have finally reached the step of him healing - and the next big step is chemo. Looking forward to this all being done with - and Jupiter living a happy and healthy life!

We never could have gotten through all this without FDMB, LLEF, and all of our LL family. Thank you for your support, generosity, and love.

ETA: I also wanted to mention that today was the first time since Jupiters amputation surgery, that he has seemed even the least bit playful! I was so incredibly happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My robe had a string hanging down and Jupiter went to grab it!!! It was so so sweet!!!!

I am going to TRY to post a video today of Jupiter walking. He is still a little bit awkward but he is learning and the progress is amazing.

Jupiter hasnt been letting me sleep at night. He meowed all night and eventually I just put him in bed with me and stayed up with him. He hasnt let me sleep for 3 nights in a row now... He really wants to hide under the couch... I can tell hes getting back to his normal self!!!

I got him to sleep in the crate quietly for about an hour and half last night. I really needed that hour and a half of sleep!! I gave him a few drops of rescue remedy(Thanks carolyn&jesse for sending the bachs rescue remedy!!) and also sprayed a little bit of feliway in the crate. (Thanks Pam&Hoot for sending us the feliway spray!!!) It was so helpful in getting him to take a nap in the crate last night.... since I havent gotten any sleep in 3 nights it was a blessing to get that nap in!

For those of you who already read the main post... I edited to add some more. Wanted to let you all know that Jupiter was playful today!!!!!! AWESOME!

I apologize for the forever long post just a lot to update I guess!

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Glad you got that stone passed - I had a housemate tell me it was a 12 on a 1-10 pain scale, so I know it was pretty miserable.

Also glad Jupiter is doing OK.

Hang in there. Nap when you can.

Good update for Jupe. I hope you will follow the vets advice about keeping him in the crate. That is important for his recovery. Perhaps if you get ear plugs you will not hear him complain. I know it's hard but as long as you keep giving in to his complaints he will continue. Be strong so he recovers completely.

I had to keep a horse with 2 fractures of a hind leg confined for 8 weeks. It was had but doing so, he fully recovered. Good luck.

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Hi Jamie - I'm so happy Jupiter is healing well and starting to be a little playful! You guys have done really well with him. Great kitty parents you are! (sort of sounded like Yoda!). How much are the chemo treatments if you don't mind my asking?

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

WOOO HOOO!! Such a great update!! We were all worried when we didn't hear from you last night but totally understand the reason!

Go Jupiter!..You're finally well on your way to being healthy! :-D :-D

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Good news indeed! Yippee!

this explains why the leg wasn't healing and should reinforce that you made the best decision for Jupiter by removing it. Now it is healing and he is doing much better! Yippee!

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Great update! What a lucky boy Jupiter is to have such great beans. Enjoy dinner tonight and tell Dane Happy Birthday!
Dara- each chemo is going to cost $160-$180 with blood work before each treatment @ $106.00 each.

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Chemo is $160 - $180 per treatment and the bloodwork is needed before each treatment and its $106. So total of $266 - $286

OOPS. I see that this question was already answered. Thanks Sherry

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

They said bloodwork is required before each treatment and if bloodwork is "off" then we have to wait 2 weeks and then get bloodwork done again. So it could end up being more expensive for this reason - but hoping this doesnt happen.

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

WOOHOO! Oh this is such a grin my face hurts!

When he complains tell him it's only a little bit of time compared to the rest of his life - he can do ANYTHING for this short time!

Happy Birthday Dane! Amazing work Jamie!

BIG HUGS and HEADBUTTS to all the crew!

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

Wonderful news!!!
I'm so happy to hear that Jupiter is healing well, and even a little playful!!
Happy birthday, Dane!!

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

I hope you and Dane managed to celebrate his birthday today. Sounds like Jupiter already gave his birthday present. :-D :-D Great news today.

One thing to ask the oncologist about blood work is if your regular vet can do it and fax him/her the results. I just went through this with a friend and her dog, and similar situation, the oncologist was a farther drive away. It was both cheaper for the local vet to do the blood work and also saved time. If you have to drive to the oncologist and the b/w says no chemo that week, you've wasted quite a bit of your time. But if the local vet does it a day or two before and faxes/emails to the oncologist, you might save yourself a trip. The other thing was time spent at the oncologist. The first thing the oncologist will do is draw blood and then you have to wait for the analysis before proceeding with chemo. If they have the b/w results already, the visit will be shorter.

You might want to take some of Jupiter's food with him on the chemo visit. Some chemo drugs are taken with food and if you don't have something with you, you'll end up with whatever they have on hand.

If you do this, the vet doing the blood draw has to draw it from a vein that won't be required for inserting the chemo catheter. My oncologist wanted the front leg veins (one as a spare if needed) reserved for chemo, and required the blood draw from the jugular. Make sure that the oncologist is aware of what the other vet is doing, and communicates any requirements.

Re: 9/24 Jupiter - update

We are planning to have the bloodwork done locally. We have already discussed this with the oncologist. I will make sure to find out if they should draw blood from a certain vein. Thank you both for the suggestions!

We talked to the oncologist about how long the chemo will take and they said we have to drop him off at 8am and pick him up between 12-2pm. They call to let us know when hes done. They said it could end up being a little later if an emergencies come in that day.

They said drop off is the same time wether or not we get the bloodwork done prior to the chemo treatment.
