Had to pick up a few more cans of Hills w/d until I hear back from the vet(they weren't in today) about if I should keep her on this or if I should add something to her food/how much should I add to her food to give her an extra boost in fiber. The vet doesn't think it's wise to switch them over to homemade food given their age and preexisting conditions. At least if we stick with the w/d, the vets office gives a nice discount, putting a case at just about what I buy Tips food for. Thankfully feeding them separately hasn't been an issue, because if I remember right, w/d is on the high end of carbs.

wow, i just looked at tip's ss - you get to stay up all night every night! how do you manage that, cindy? but what great night time numbers. good job on managing the dose!

any help you can get on the food is worth it - it can cost a ton to feed these kitters. we got 2 kittens in august, plus Anya (our civvie) and between the three of them they eat about 10 cans of fancy feast a day!

W/D is listed as 25% carbs!  Unless you need some very HC around, I'd return it. Some people here use canned pumpkin (no sugar or spices, just plain pumpkin) or squash to add fiber to the diet. You could also try baby food squash as they are small jars. I've heard anything from 1 tsp to 1 tablespoon mixed in with the meal.

I switched Neko to raw food diet at age 11 and she took to it right away. There are still a lot of vets (like Neko's  ) who get squeamish about feeding raw food. My civie goes to a different vet and they are more up to date and the ones who suggested raw as the way to handle both Neko's diabetes and Theo's urinary tract issues. The vets like to suggest the veterinary foods because they make money from it too.

The raw actually isn't what the vet was squeamish about. Though they didn't explain very well in the email why they didn't think that a homemade diet is right. Right now I'm waiting on the vet to return my email on how much pumpkin they recommend for Christmas, the w/d is working, Tip isn't getting in to it at all(hence she's still getting greens  ). Because I just don't want another big flare-up from her. I can handle the smaller ones, but not big ones like what happened over the weekend.

@ Julie: I just sleep between her +2 and +6, it works for now. I think my vet was selling 24 cans of w/d for $38 something, and Tips EVO is $35 for 24 cans. So, ehn. It works until I hear back from the vet on if they think adding the pumpkin would work, or if squash would be better, stuff like that.
