HAPPY WEDNESDAY!!

Thanks, y'all, for being so patient with me and all my dental questions of late. I called a vet today and asked lots of questions of the receptionist (or whatever her title is). She was able to answer most of them and the ones she couldn't answer were about the meds and she said there are options, but I needed to talk to the vet.

I told her no NSAID because of risk of renal failure. She said she didn't know of anything else to use, that NSAID's were good, but when I said Hershey is an 11-year old diabetic, she said she understood having extra concerns due to age/chronic condition and that there are certainly options the vet can use. :?: Couldn't think of one, in particular, to ask for. Y'all have probably mentioned one, but I'll have to go back and make sure I wrote down everything from my recent condos. She did mention butorphanol (?sp) being a possible option.

Told her NO convenia - she said there are options for antibiotics. :?: Didn't have note of one to request.

He will come home same day.
They do dental charting.
Post-op appt included in price.
Post-op comfort: heated pad.
Recovery cage in clinic area with almost constant eyes on them.

Only problem - They aren't set up for X-rays, so no pre- or post-procedure X-rays. Not happy about that, but I liked everything else and they're only about 3 miles from my house, so I can get there quickly and he won't have far to travel home.

Since he needs a physical/new Lev prescription anyway, I've scheduled him an appt for Friday morning (11/15). Ugh! Now have to find cheapest place to get Lev. The pharmacy we used for the first prescription (6/12) has gone up ~$100. YIKES!

Going to call our current vet again tomorrow to see if they've found our records. Without them, I don't even have his shot record. :YMSIGH: I never thought about needing to have a copy of it before, but you can believe I'll keep an updated copy from now on.

Chilly day today, can't blame Hershey for spending much of it curled up on his blanket! Expecting the coldest night of the season (so far) tonight (low 26) but back to almost 60 degrees tomorrow. Never know how to dress...

Thanks for coming over; hope you're having a great night -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

Good evening! I am just catching up on Hershey. I wish I had any advice at all but have never dealt with dentals for either of our kitties. Just wanted to say hello and give you a hug. ((((Libby))))

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

WOOT! WOOT! I see green.  Well done Hershey - quite the rainbow today.

Good luck on the vetty appointment today. I now ask for all lab results to be emailed to me. One of the vets I use now has all records (shots, prescriptions), ability to make appointments, on line. Could be a good question for the new vetty too. Hard to believe the old vet can't find the records.

Buprenorphine is also called Buprenex (trade name) - not sure if that's the one you were quoted for pain relief. There are lots of choices for antibiotics, just make sure if it's liquid it doesn't contain sugar. Lots do. Depending if Hershey has some inflammation now, they might want him to do some antibiotics before surgery.

Good luck on the Lev hunt.

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

Bupe is good for pain management.

My vet prescribes clindamycin if an antibiotic is needed after a dental.

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

Hi Libby,

Yippee for  and for finding a vet that is close, and seems to have the right answers. I hope your face to face visit goes just as well :-D

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

 :RAHCAT

Paws crossed on the dental and we will be watching for updates as things move along.

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

Congratulations on the  today, Libby! And on the new vet & questions mostly answered.

Re. AB - my cats usually get clindamycin for dentals. I've been given some other antibiotics as well, but I prefer the clindamycin. It's a liquid, & I don't know about other kitties, but my cats will eat it mixed in with their food (big bonus).

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

Hi Libby, This all sounds very promising. I hope it will work out for you and Hershey. Yay on the  !

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 11/13 Hershey GREEN! and NEW vet scheduled

    Well, done Hershey!

Tess gets Orbax for an AB. She gets really sick on Clavamox, which is a pretty common AB. But I've see a lot of cats on the boards lose appetite and throw up w/ it.

Check out Good Rx.com you just put in your zip code and what drug you are looking for and the site will look up prices at most of the pharmacies in your area. I found that Walgreens is considerably cheaper even including their $20 membership.

Good luck w/ the new vet.

- Hey, Melissa - Thanks for coming by. I always welcome hugs and appreciate the encouragement!

- Hey, Wendy - I'll ask about email, thanks. It never occurred to me that they might misplace our records and I couldn't get them when I needed them. They had my MIL and BIL's records (and I'm not sure they even still use that office) but not ours. Sure don't want to start immunizations all over...

Thanks for sending me the buprenorphine name, too. I know about meds containing sugar. One of the vets at our current office tried to give me a hairball med for Hershey. I asked about the sugar and she was like, oh hey! he's diabetic and can't have it. Really??

- Hey, Sienne - Thanks for the bupe/clindamycin. The current vet said they like to start them on antibiotics about 3 days before procedure. I guess I'll find out what this one recommends when we go Friday.

- Hey, Jane - Thanks. I hope this vet works out, too. I hate looking for new doctors. In the last year, I had to find a new doctor, my son aged out of his doctor, our dentist and our orthodontist have retired, and now a new vet search. Gets old - fast!

- Hey, Anne - Thanks for the encouragement and well-wishes!

- Hey, Suzanne - Thanks on the  and for letting us know about mixing the clindamycin with food. The girl today seemed surprised that we'd be okay with pilling or whatever at home. I presumed most people do, but what do I know...

- Hey, Ella - Thanks for the encouragement. I hope this closer vet works out, too. It would sure beat the 21-mile drive we currently make. And, maybe this one will be more FD friendly.

- Hey, Ann - Thanks for the orbax and clavamox info. I'll check out goodrx.com, too. I just couldn't believe how much Levemir had gone up at the one pharmacy. :o But, they kind of have you over a barrel...

**Well, the  was short-lived, but maybe it means he hasn't forgotten what it looks like and we'll see more soon. Hershey must be feeling good because I hear a lot of hoorawin' and sliding going on in the kitchen/dining room!
