Hi Folks:

Yesterday

Well starting today pink is better than red. Scooter is happy the sun is back and I am happy that the temp is finally above zero! He seems happy and content. Julie he is eating well and I called the vet she will see him later today to check on him since his bg is up again. Thank you for the advice. :-D

Thank you all so much for always helping us! :-D

Linda

HI guys .. yup, pink is definitely better then red .. maybe he'll go even lower today! It's nice to hear he's feeling so good though .. have a great day guys!

Good Morning ~O)

Glad to hear Scooter will be going in for a follow up. Dental surgery is surgery and there are plenty of opportunistic bacteria with potential to cause trouble.
Also sometimes a tooth can break during extraction and cause infection following dental surgery due to the undetected tooth fragment remaining.

BK had a total of 4 dental surgeries over the years - the first 2 with a veterinary dental specialist while on insulin and the last 2 with his regular vet since being OTJ.
He is now toothless!
In all cases we had a follow up visit.

Hi Linda,

It is always good to hear that our kitties are feeling good, no matter the meter reading~
Good luck with the vetty visit - Hope Scooter continues to enjoy sunshine, and snowmobiling sounds like great fun :-D
Have a great day!

Hi Linda!!

Happy to hear that Scooter seems to be feeling good! I know I'm ready for some nice warm sunshine too!

Good vetty vines sent your way. This is where you're not sure if you want them to find something (that would explain the high numbers but mean there's something wrong) or find nothing and have no reason for the high bg numbers.

You never know which to wish for! Good luck!

Re: 2/12 Scooter AMPS-394, +5-420

Hi Folks:

Thanks for all the condo visits today. Well Scooters mouth has healed pretty well and the Vet thinks that is the reason his bg is up. She thinks he maybe eating kibble without me knowing because his mouth feels better. So she suggested all the kitties in the house go wet food and we have specific feeding times 3 times a day we can commit to. oh-e-vay! :-D :-D She reminded me that both Scooter and Jack are sugar kids most likely because of the kibble being so high carb. (they were on SD light for 10 yrs).

So for tonight I am going to move the big bowls to a common area and see if we can catch him eating it. He is such a little devil! His blood work came back great again today except his bg was 420 at the vet. She also mentioned the levemir might need to be tossed and a new one opened.

SO another night of the Olympics and food bowl watching! LOL.

Tomorrow I will go get enough wet cat food for the whole family!

Linda

Hi Linda,
Good luck with the switch to total wet food for everyone. It should help a lot, and it is much better for cats because it has the moisture of their natural diet. You can add water to it, too.
How old is your Levemir? We use Rusty's Lev cartridge until it is virtually empty. As long as you keep it at the recommended temperature and don't let it freeze it should be fine.

Glad that Scooter is feeling good. Thanks for visiting us and for the knee vines,

Ella & Rusty

hmm, well if he's getting into kibble, depending on how carb sensitive he is, i know we've had kitties here who have gone up and stayed high for a full day after just a few kibble pieces.

before you replace the insulin, i think i'd toss the dry food and see what that does for his numbers. i agree with your vet - having had a diabetic cat, i now think dry food is evil and have persuaded all of my friends to take their cats off of it. Dr. Lisa on http://www.catinfo.org is awfully persuasive about the logic of canned food and why the dry is so bad for cats.

in my own experience, punkin had a history of bladder infections at least 1-2 times a year for probably 8-10 years, never had another one after i switched him to canned. my civvie, anya, had chronic diarrhea that nothing helped - and we'd given up on it going away. when i switched them both to canned - no more bladder infections and no more diarrhea. that convinced me.

and i am one of those people who loathe the smell, mess and cans that have to be recycled. but i do it. ugh.

Come on down Scooter, we want to see those blues again! It's only cycle 3 of this dose, sometimes you just need to wait for the depot to build. Is he done his antibiotics now?

I'm with everyone on tossing the dry food. My second cat has urinary tract issues and doesn't like to drink water much. Going to all wet helped him too. It's so much easier feeding both cats the same thing, so I don't have to worry about food raids and bowl watching.

On the Levemir, I once used a cartridge for 77 days, and that was using it to the end. As long as it's kept in the fridge it should last longer than a month.

Hi Folks thanks for the visits!

I just don't know how all 13 kitties are going to like the change to eat when I tell them to. We have a couple who have been food deprived in their lives and eat fast and steel food so I have to supervise. I also don't know how many times a day to feed them. Scooter and Jack get 5-6 meals a day. What happens when you have a long day and aren't home to feed them?

I am not arguing one bit about the kibble I think it is the worst! Just unsure of a time table since leaving the food out all day is out of the question since the gobblers will eat it all.

Linda

I know with 13 it's going to be a challenge, but they'll learn to eat at "mealtimes"...All my cats had been grazers too, and when went to all canned, they got fed 4 times/day...6am/noon/6pm/midnight....didn't take long for their stomachs to reset their clocks.

On the kittys that eat too fast, put a big rock or golf ball or something in a bowl with their food...it forces them to slow down, or smear it over a plate instead of putting it in a pile.....that slows them down too...or you can buy bowls specifically made to slow down those fast eaters Slow Feed Bowls

Then you could use an auto feeder that could be set to open mid-day for meals like these Automatic Feeders

Good luck! I'm sure you'll find a way!

Glad to hear Scooters mouth is A-OK

I'm with the others - all our cats now get LC wet. We also use 5 compartment programmable timed feeders .
BK has a roommate now and they each have their own feeder. We load them with the same foods in the same amounts and we have them synchronized to deploy at the same times. Don't know what I'd do without them

13 cats? And I thought I had problems when I had five!! I think they'll adjust to no dry faster than you'd expect. Especially if they like moist food. If you feed them four times a day, they will be full enough that they won't miss the dry. The auto feeders work well. If they have favorite spots, you can place the feeders strategically in those spots.

I'm glad Scooter's mouth has healed well and his bw is great. Now if you can just prevent him from getting into contraband. I hope he came down for you this evening.
