It appears that Shadow has failed the +9 snack attack test for insulin production. On the other hand, his numbers are surprisingly consistent. It has occurred to me that I did make one change to his diet as of a day and a half ago. I began adding digestive enzymes to his food. ***WARNING: GRAPHIC CAT POOP DESCRIPTION AHEAD*** Shadow has always suffered from smelly cat syndrome and when his pancreatitis starts acting up, things get even worse. His poop is gray, claylike and the smell... oh dear gawd... the smell! I recently had a friend suggest that I add an enzyme product and I started that with the PM feedings on 7/29. The change in poop quality has been remarkable. They look so normal as to be almost indistinguishable from my civies'! I'm shocked. My question is: Do you think that the enzymes could be affecting his absorption enough to shift his glucose values? It could be coincidence... but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.


PMPS 119! That's better! I went back to feeding just the 0% at the +9 snack time. Let's hope this is a sign of better numbers to come.

I don't have experience with digestive enzymes however I would imagine better digestion leads to better metabolism in general. . .

Thanks, Sandy. I'm very pleased with these numbers. Even if we have to keep him here long term, I'm fine with that. Mind you, we would both love remission, but he's doing so well that I can't reasonably ask for more from a 20 year old kitty.

What are the ingredients in the enzymes? I've found you need to be diligent with reading labels. Even seemingly straight forward products can contain things like rice or potato flour.

I will send the manufacturer an email asking them about the beet powder in the product. I know that some pet foods use beet pulp as a prebiotic since it's a moderately fermentable fiber that is good for cats in particular. Beet pulp has had the sugar removed in processing and that is what I suspect has been done here. However, it never hurts to double check!

Gray poop can mean he has a deficiency. I've read that cats with EPI have gray poop. The enzymes should help with that as that is what vets tell owners of cats with EPI.

A little more online investigation has me believing that yes, it's the action of the enzymes themselves that are causing this rise in his BG. He's finally getting the nutrition he needs out of his food - imagine that. I'm very pleased with how much improved he is on the stuff. He's no longer bloated and gassy and he's stopped protesting when I scoop him up. His numbers are still in the therapeutic range, so as long as I don't see a steady climb, we are just going to roll with it. Hopefully we will see a drop as his pancreas begins to heal. *more finger crossing*

+4 is 134. He hasn't done this quite so late in the cycle before. Any ideas of what might be going on? Could we be looking at the beginnings of a failed reduction?

It's just one number. I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes a trend. Take this as an opportunity to sleep and see what tomorrow brings.
