Good morning! Going to the vet today with my moms kitty Molly. She has struggled with allergies since she was a baby cat and was found near death. She is 14, and my mom is bonded super close to her. I imagine they will want to give steroid shot, as that always has cleared it up, but because of her age, and she hasnt had one in years, Im afraid of what could happen. My mom says she is ok with whatever they have to do, since right now she has scratched herself bloody raw all around her neck. We changed out her food 4 or 5 years ago to natural balance lid and that has worked for the most part, but now she is worse than ever. I am just hoping Chi Chi doesnt decide to plummet today while we are gone. We are leaving at about +3, so I will test right before that. Paws crossed for them both today please!! nailbite_smile Have a great Caturday everyone!

So an hour before we are to leave for vet appt. and she has dropped 110 pts in 2 hours, I just fed her a small meal to maybe keep her from going too low. Mom may have to stay home with her. I will test at +3....

ETA- did not get a +3 before I left. Told mom to get a test by 3.25, and she did, but she had dropped by then quite a bit..

Laura, I had a cat that used to get feline acne. Every time it happened the vet would give me prednisolone pills for about 10 days. You might want to ask about that for Molly since the shots work well. If would avoid vet visits. I hope it helps.

Good start for ChiChi and of course it will be an active cycle since you are going to the vet. Surf safely now.

Of course she dropped when I left. Mom stayed home and fed a very small amount at +3.25, then at 4,25 she gave a tiny bit of hc. I just got home with civie Molly, and I got the 59, so I will test again in 20 min.

Molly got a depo medrol shot and convenia shot..2 of the worst..but her condition was really bad and thats what we had to do. She had a convenia shot back in May and has had them before that, so Im hoping that wont be an issue. As for the steroid, I will have to just hope it doesnt cause her to go diabetic! Mom has said she will not take care of two diabetic cats..one is too much as it is. Molly is a totally different cat, and does not want to be touched by me especially, and have never been successful with pilling or even nail clips. She just goes all ninja if you try anything with her! Her bw was very good back in May also, and the vet said no other heart or any underlying issues that she can see or hear. Paws definitely crossed for her. She said most likely environmental allergy, or food, so we will keep her inside off the patio indefinitely, especially now during rainy season and the grass is being cut every week(could be a trigger).Im thinking of getting her on wellness Core, but its so expensive! I guess we do whatever it takes..OK!! back to Chi Chi. Gonna go grab a test and will update soon.

we had a dog with severe skin problems and i got more help (that finally did the trick) from the staff at the locally owned pet store. it turned out to be a food allergy and a food switch eliminated whatever the problem food was. A 10 year + problem was gone with a new food.

That's what i'd do for miss molly. Get advice from the staff at a locally owned store - they're more likely to be knowledgable than people at somewhere like Petco that are just cashiers. If you don't find someone competent, try a novel protein that she likely hasn't had before. People often try kangaroo. Have you eliminated beef from her diet? beef is a common cat allergen.

Convenia was developed for skin problems, and since she's had it before, she's less likely to have a problem with it today. the issue with Convenia is that it's often given for other things besides skin issues, and that if a cat is allergic to it, it's in there for at least 2 weeks. But in her case, it probably will be fine. I'd just watch for signs of allergy - like breathing difficulty.

Thanks Julie! Im going to the pet store where I get her food, and they were the ones that got me to switch her from ff to grain free limited ingredient food and that was a huge improvement. never had to get another shot since then til today. I will talk to them and get some suggestions. She hasnt had any beef or chicken for a few months for sure, just duck, venison and salmon formulas from the Natural Balance lid diet. I just tested Chi Chi and she is 106 at +6, so I assume I am ok to not test again til +7 or so.

Your mom was amazing again today. Chi Chi really has bad timing on her lows.

Fish can also be a common allergen for cats. Kangaroo is harder to get in the US than Canada. I knew a dog that had to go to ostrich to stop scratching. Always the expensive fuds. Sometimes a raw diet will help allergies.
