AMPS 101 :o

So surprised to see a blue AMPS after all the drama at pre-shot last night. Hope he can hold on to it. 5th acupuncture session is today. DH is working from home, so Buster will have company - yay!

Been lurking but not posting much lately. Always wishing the best for our LL family!

Way to hold the line Buster! Neko's 5th acupuncture session is today too. Paws crossed for good healing sessions.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67 - metacam for pain?

Acupuncture went well. I'm not really seeing enough of an improvement to continue with the last treatment. We talked about pain management, but I'm not really convinced he's in all that much pain? So hard to tell. He does get kind of angsty and talkative when you start messing with those elbows. Vet wants to try Metacam. I suggested Buprenex, as I've seen many people use it here. Any thoughts on Metacam?

I think I might have her do another x-ray to see what's going on at this point. It's been over a year since my other vet took an x-ray and said she saw beginning stages of arthritis. I'm not exactly sure what problem I'm trying to solve.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67 - Metacam for pain?

It looks like Buster wanted some attention last night. I hope he surfs safely today.

I think Metacam is the one with the black box warning.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67 - Metacam for pain?

Metacam has a black box warning on it for use in cats. it can cause liver failure. there are plenty of stories on here about people who either had a cat die, almost die, or know a cat that died from metacam. It is only approved for use in cats very specifically, as a one time shot following surgery.

It is used more in other countries. My acupuncture vet also gave Metacam to his cat - i talked with him about what i wrote above and he said it is dose-related. If a cat gets too much, then there are liver problems. I didn't want to risk it with punkin, though. he was too fragile with so many things going on.

Bupe is a safer choice. You can give it 2-3 times a day. It's easy to squirt it up in the cheek pocket.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67 - Metacam for pain?

Yikes! I don't think Buster needs any more trouble. I'll stick with the Buprenex. Thanks, Julie!

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67 - Metacam for pain?

Not to be overly dramatic, but one of our members, Carolyn and Latte, had the sad experience of Latte dying from it. I don't think she started this site Metacam Kills but I know Latte is named on there.

Bupe is a good alternative and it is safe. I've never heard of any side effects, other than if you give too much it's like the kitty is stoned.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67

Neko is on buprenorphine twice daily for her arthritis. It made a world of difference for her. Her vetty's next choices were gapabentin and tramadol, in that order. We tried gapapentin, but it didn't do much for her. Talking to Neko's acupuncture vet today, she agreed that what you use for pain meds is ECID. Gaba works for some but not others. She also agreed on trying bupe first. I get in compounded chicken flavor - Neko VERY eagerly takes it.

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67

Cool! We already tried Tramadol and Gabapentin - neither one seems to do anything for Buster. Mmmm...chicken...nummeh!

Re: 8/12 Buster AMPS 101, +6 67

have you also tried cosequin, adequan and/or dausequin? We didn't get much response from the cosequin, but the adequan helped. i think Ann/Tess has experience with dausequin.

Barbara/Tuffy said that the equine version of adequan is more effective than the canine version.

He is on Cosequin, Adequan and HA. The Adequan was working splendidly, but it's not anymore. At least, Buster had stopped licking his elbows for a time but then he started up again. That's what led me to try acupuncture.
