Zener is napping on the bed this morning but no sleeping Annebean. Tillie just came in and ate some of his food, exactly the same that is in her bowl but she turned up her nose at that. Both kitties were anxious to do yard patrol this morning since it wasn't raining.

I have a question about shooting in the flank. I've done this for 4 cycles now and it seems to be an ouchy every time. I'm not sure that I have the best location. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources?

Thinking of ailing kitties and beans. Happy Fursday, LL!

Trix was definitely a little more ouchie with the flank shots, but she started to get used to them by the time we stopped insulin. It was just too scary to shoot higher once we started the fluids...I tried all sorts of things with timing between fluids and insulin, but no matter what I did, she dropped like a rock. The only thing that prevented it was the flank shot.

Aw, I wish AnneBean as home, too!!!!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

Hey bootiful Mr. Z-Man! Sure would be nice if you and Doc would get off that ugly high floor...it's much nicer and cleaner on the lower floors.

Tillie - silly girl, dat food's the same but 3 of mine did the same thing this morning. Is is National Musical Bowls day?

Liz - I know it's sort of lonesome there without Anne, the family isn't quite 'complete'. HUGS!!

Flank shot - when we were still using Lantus, I tried many times to shoot Doc flank but he would cry, jerk and run. I could only shoot scruff. Now that we've changed to Levemir AND he's figured out the sting isn't going to happen, I can now shoot elsewhere. I've been shooting top of flank for last few days slowly working down to the actual flank area where there's more circulation. It's such a huge difference. I've always shot KT flank, he has never grumbled but he's got lots of extra loose skin there.

ANOTHER BIG HUG!!! Hope Mr. Z-Man slides back down where he's supposed to stay!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

I hope the flank shot helps. We've always done it there, slower absorption in the scruff. Just take your time. Get him used to you making a tent there. Tess occasionalyy feels it but usually no problem.

   On Tillie. We never see Emma drinking from her water bowl, but when we let her into the house for her afternoon raw lamb treat, she goes and drinks Tess's water. Before we notice we were beginning to worry that Tess was drinking a lot more water!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

I tried flank shots, too. Gabby looked at me like I was out of my mind! It didn't help that I tended to give fur shots when I tried for the flank. I gave up and shoot in the scruff.

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

I also have no experience with flank shooting - i thought it would hurt more so i never did it.

Is the issue around the fluids? When we were also giving fluids, we'd shoot in the scruff a little closer to the head, then wait til +3 and do the fluids farther back along punkin's back. probaly right about his shoulders. So there might be a 3" space in between those two spots.

hoping zener feels good today and he eats all of Tillie's food.

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

Come on down Zener! I hope you get the flank shot worked out. We have never tried it. I bet you all miss Anne. Silly Tillie! Funny how it can taste better in a new dish. Have a great day Liz!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

I thought I was shooting the flank but then after looking at the pictures see it was more the side of the belly? It doesn't seem to bother Max but it sure was easier the few times I did the scruff. However, the worry about less absorption bothers me so I trudge ahead hoping it wasn't one more reason for him to hide from me.

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497

We've never shot anywhere but the scruff, so no advice from me. I don't think the flank would work for us, as Cinco HATES to have the lower part of his body touched. When I'm brushing him, if I go too far down his back, he twists and swats at me.

Silly Tillie! Minka does the exact same thing. She'll turn her nose up at her plate, then walk over and eat from Harvey's - same food, same supplements, etc. Cats!

Sending hurry home vines for Annebean!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497;+5 437

Count me in as another whose kitty has a reaction of pain when shot in the flank! And Tiger often tries to jerk away, it will often end up as a fur shot-in fact, it happened last night!

Re: 8/14 Zener AMPS 497;+5 437

Hi Liz,
I tried shooting Stu in the flank, but never was successful. I'm sure it was painful for him. Rusty has so much fur that I never even tried to shoot either flank or behind the shoulder. I shoot pretty high up on the scruff.

Glad to see that the Z Man enjoyed his yard patrol. How many "darks" before Anne gets home. She's been away a long time.

Have a good evening, Liz,

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

We shoot scruff, chest (right behind her front paws), side, and flank (right in front of her back paws). The skin is loose on the flank so you want to be sure you pick it up, you see the skin, and you insert with the bevel up at a 45 degree angle down making sure you don't shoot through to the other side of the skin. Gracie never cares where we shoot. Mid Zener is getting thinner, perhaps the flank is not comfy?

I hope Zener is eating something today, sending you more appy vines anyway since he could used them. He's just got to learn from Tillie and maybe try her bowl to see if it's any better. Hugs to Zener's beans tonight. :YMHUG:

No help on the flank shooting. Neko's got a section of shorter hair below the shoulders so that's where I do the shots.

I shoot Furball in the side. It's not the flank. I grab some of her fur and skin and roll my hand to pull it back and carefully stick the syringe in. I have to be careful it doesn't come out the other side. That's why I roll my hand instead of pulling up. It takes getting used to, but that's the only place I've ever shot Furball.

Keeping you all in my prayers.
