Yesterday's Condo

OMG, what a day it's been. It feels a lot later than 2:15 in the afternoon!

I left a message for the Ophthalmologist last night about Cinco's eye. His assistant called me first thing this morning @-) to say they could get him in at 11:00 am. Not being a morning person (understatement of the century), I really had to hustle to get everyone fed and medicated and get myself ready to take him in. It's a 30 minute drive, too. We got there right on time (I'm sure they were shocked), and the doctor was very busy, so I'm really fortunate they squeezed us in. When he examined Cinco's eye, he told me he was VERY glad I brought Cinco in right away. He has a large ulcer on his corneal! No wonder the poor little guy was flinching when we put his drops in and didn't want his eye touched. Dr. C said, had I waited longer, it would have gotten much worse and easily could have resulted in losing the eye, so I did right to call as soon as we noticed an issue. Whew! He stopped two of the eye drops Cinco was on, and added three, plus he wants me to give him some Tramadol for pain. He said there is an eye drop he would normally prescribe for pain that would be better, but it would raise the pressure in the eye, and Cinco's is already at the very top edge of normal pressure. He also sentenced Cinco to the Cone of Shame! He said rubbing or scratching at the eye would be disastrous. Cinco has never rubbed or scratched his eyes, through the whole ordeal, but I will put the collar on him when I am not around to watch him. He wants to see him again on Tuesday to make sure it's improving, as he is going to be on vacation from Thursday the 21st through Labor Day.

I tested Cinco when we got home, expecting to see a rise in his BG, so imagine my surprise when I got that 58! :o So we're testing every 30 right now, and each test is accompanied by an eye drop as we try to get caught up on dosing. He now will be getting a total of 10 drops a day! Good thing I have no plans to do anything else until we go to Reno next weekend (when he will be boarded with Dawn)! Thank goodness my supply of FD salmon was replenished yesterday. You can do almost anything to him when he has his face in a plate of that! Cinco, I know Mama has been nagging you to go to the lagoon, but really, did you have to do it right now, and so dramatically?

It's time to test again. Then I need to run to the grocery store for bean food, which I think I can do in 30 minutes or less. After that, there are the cat boxes to scoop, since I didn't get to it before we left, and dishes to wash, etc. etc. etc.!

Sending healing vines to all in need, especially J.D., and hugs to all their beans, especially Dyana. :YMHUG: Special vines to Amy's DF and hugs and prayers to her and her family.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Rocky & Tina for completing their OTJ trial!!! party_cat and cheers to those still working on their trials. :RAHCAT Love the good news!

Thank goodness you got in to see the vet. If you are interested I will look up the link to a soft collar I got for Tiffany. The plastic ones sure hurt when they bump you! The dosecrease might be working too well!

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

Thanks, Elise. I actually have a wonderful soft collar that Sasha got from UCD, but Dr. Canton's instructions say in capital letters: "DO NOT REMOVE OR ALTER THE RIGID PLASTIC PROTECTIVE E COLLAR....DO NOT SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE PLASTIC RIGID E-COLLAR WITH A "SOFT" E-COLLAR or "donut collar", as these types of collars will not adequately protect the eye." So no joy there. As long as I'm in the kitchen/family room where he hangs out, I'll leave it off, but when I go somewhere, on it goes. Not taking any chances!

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

Wow, I am so glad you got Cinco in so quickly - that must be so painful! Our civvie, Frankie, has severe corneal scarring from ulcers due to a herpes infection she had when she was just 3 weeks old...the rescue told us she was in a ton of pain, but she's such a fighter. I'm sorry he has to have the cone again, poor guy, but it's best to keep that eye protected. Sending tons of quick healing vines along with some "surf safely" vines, too!

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

Hi Tricia,

That's was good that you brought Cinco in the oph vet. Oh , the dreaded cone.. but it is better to be safe. Sending vines that Cinco will heal quickly and adjust to the cone. Wow, on the 58, it figures he would drop today. He looks like he is surfing now, that's good.

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

Poor Cinco. I'm so glad you were able to get him to the vet today. I hope his eye heals quickly. Poor kitty having to wear the cone of shame. I hope he surfs a little higher for you. I hope Sasha is doing okay wearing her vest.

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

+8.5 68

Thanks for visiting us, Amy, Catherine and Carla. Yes, I'm really, really glad we were able to get Cinco in to see his OV today!! I am now thinking the not so great numbers we've been seeing lately were due to this issue. At first I couldn't think how he could have come down so fast, and then I remembered that the OV numbed his eye, so the pain was gone! I'll bet that made him come down. Now we just have to keep him down. I think the pain med I gave him has done it's job. He just let me rub his belly. He has NEVER allowed me to do that before. He was purring and rubbing his paws over his ears, which is something both he and Sasha do when they are especially happy. I think he's a little high, plus not in pain. Makes me :-D :-D :-D

Amy, this ulcer is due to herpes, too. It's strange that it happened, as we were already giving him an anti-viral eye drop, but the vet said herpes is pretty tough to control. I guess the new anti-viral he prescribed is stronger.

He came up slowly, which is nice. I never gave him anything higher than 6%, either. I'm hoping we can avoid a bounce. We'll see....

I hope you aren't all tired of Sasha pictures. When I was in Petco yesterday I saw these really cute cat harnesses, and one had a little hood. I thought it just might work for her, so I bought it. It's hot today and I was worried she was too warm in the vest. I put the harness on over the sock, and between the two, they cover what needs to be covered. She looks pretty adorable, but I am biased!

When we were at the OV this morning, a lady came out of the exam room with her cat on a leash, and she was wearing a similar type of harness. Looked much more comfortable than the ones I've tried to use on my cats. When Sasha no longer needs this one, I may try using it for the purpose for which it was intended.

Such a great momma bean getting Cinco into the OV vetty so fast! Paws crossed for fast healing. Interesting thoughts on the pain meds and numbers, it sure makes a difference with Neko.

And I agree with Liz, bring on the cute kitty photos. :-D

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

So good to hear you got Cinco in and you have some answers! Maybe not the ones you'd want, but answers! Especially to a possible reason for the strange numbers lately! Hopefully now that he's got some drops to help as well as the pain control, that's all he'll need to get back to his pretty numbers!

Sasha looks so cute in her new duds! I bought one like that from PetCo for China, but she's too uh "fluffy" and it doesn't fit around her belly! Guess it's time to really get her on a **whisper** diet!

I'm also so happy that you've found Dawn so you can continue with your plans to go to Reno without worrying that Cinco isn't getting his medications correctly! I'm sure that does great things for your blood pressure numbers too!

Hope you have a quiet night and he doesn't keep you up all night testing!

Re: 8/15 Cinco AMPS 249 +3 129 +6.25 58 +6.75 62 +7.5 65 Op

Glad Cinco was able to get in today and they were able to give you new medication!

As for the new clothing accessory.......she looks MEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWvolous lololol (and I am not at all biased!)

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

:o    :o

Looks like we have an answer about the pain/discomfort causing the higher numbers!! OMG, I was NOT expecting that! I broke out the Cowboy Cookout right away. Cinco thinks it's very unfair that he's only getting a teaspoon of it. I tried to explain he'll get more in about 20 minutes, but he's not happy about that.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

Hey Cinco, that is quite low enough. Time to come up now. No need to be so dramatic!!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

Looks like we will be up together for a bit here Tricia....

Our boys need to come back from the deep end and swim around in a little higher numbers!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

WOW! It really DOES look like the cause to the ickier numbers of late must have been Cinco's discomfort.

Time to come up now Cinco!

Glad you were able to get him in right away this morning and get the problem diagnosed before things got worse. Sounds like the game plan will get him fixed up and feeling better quickly. Poor guy...cone of shame again. And Sasha looks absolutely adorable in her new harness.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

Hey Cinco....You and Skooter better come into the shore! I happen to know there's a lagoon shark out there! I saw it! ~ China

See? I got a picture!!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36

Ack!! 36???

Okay, I had to read everything to see what was going on! Thank goodness you got Cinco in to the opthamologist today, and look at what a difference it made!! That makes sense too, he was in pain, poor guy! So now, he just needs to come up a bit and surf safely! What a great mammabean you are - Go Cinco!

I love that picture of Sasha, that little sweater is adorable!! Sasha has to be the cutest poster girl for kitty sweaters! :YMHUG: Tricia, I figured that in your last post Sasha was wearing an infant type of top that was modified. You can tell from the cute little touches! I experiemented with an old T shirt that I cut and sewed into a tube, then cut arm holes into, but yours are much cuter. p.s. I can't sew straight either  I just pick small projects that it can't be noticed LOL I will keep experimenting and hopefully can get Tiger to model for you  though she isn't as cute as Sasha! :-D

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42

Oh, I don't know, Ruth. Tiger is pretty cool-looking, with those tufted ears - like a lynx! Yes, the mint green vest Sasha was wearing is an infant garment. I didn't do anything to it, just put it on and it fit pretty well. The only problem was it was fleece and this is August in CA! I may put it back on her at night, but for the warmer hours the harness seems to do the trick.

I originally started with a baby t-shirt, after Sasha's first surgery, but it just didn't fit right. Then we tried doggy t-shirts, but Sasha figured out how to get out of them pretty quickly. The oncologist suggested taking a man's tube sock, cutting off the foot, and cutting a hole for the arm. The first one I did was a brand new sock and too tight. Then I swiped an old sock of my DH's. It's a little stretched out, as he used to cycle a lot and has huge calves. I couldn't get it to stay up around her neck. The vest, and then the harness. took care of the neck coverage. If I could sew, I'd make a turleneck sleeveless t-shirt, but I can't, so this will have to do!

Thanks for the warning about the shark, Chris. I'm doing my best to get Cinco out of the deep end, but he likes it there! He and Skooter seem to be getting along pretty well.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42

I would be ok if they were getting along a little bit closer to the shore....

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39

Tell me about it! Cinco is not usually this stubborn about coming out of the deep end. I think they are a bad influence on each other!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39

I say we blame China lolol

I am not sure how, but lolol

Cinco, dude! Wrong way.....other way....

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39

What are you feeding him Tricia? Come on up and join Max in the 50's, Cinco.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39

Well, China is his usual partner in crime, but she is landlocked tonight, so I guess he decided to find a new cohort! I gave him a dollop (very technical term) of karo in his Cowboy Cookout at +3.5. I rarely have to resort to that. I'm sorry if Cinco is influencing Skooter for the bad, but I would like to point out that Skooter has spent a lot more time in the deep end lately, so I think it's a toss up as to who is leading who (whom?).

Elise, right now he's getting Merrick's Cowboy Cookout. Before that he was getting his normal stuff. Tonight was Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39

Wow. What a day. So glad you got your boy to the doctor. But yikes, what a difference feeling better made. Time for some heading-up-numbers now, though, mister. Up, up, up, you hear!

Sasha is a beauty. What amazing eyes. So stinkin' cute in her new outfit.

Marilyn and Polly

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39 +4 44

Thanks, Marilyn. Sasha is beyond adorable. She can't help it.

Cinco is being VERY stubborn. I've never had this much trouble bringing him up. Karo and 18% aren't doing it. Next up: karo and 21%. Gonna be a long night. Good thing I'm nocturnal!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39 +4 44

I agree what a day you had!!! I'm glad you got Cinco in. Is he on idoxuridine?

Looks like he and Gracie were swimming around in the very green waters today. Just what you needed.

Ok....Sasha is a major cuteness alert!!!

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39 +4 44

Hi Marje:

Cinco was on Idoxuridine, but the OV took him off that today, as well as the Prednisolone, and put him on Ofloxacin and Latanoprost. He was on Latanoprost before, for the Bartonella.

I just wish he'd come up now. Point made. I'm glad he's in such good company, though.

A friend once described Sasha as "beyond cute". I agree. But again, I'm biased.

Re: 8/15 Cinco PMPS 133 + 2.5 36 +3 42 +3.5 39 +4 44

Maybe going off pred will lower his BG. He sure is taking his time coming up tonight. Come on and join Max in the 60's Cinco. You will still be green but so much better for your bean.

Finally! He's above 60. Of course, he's had so much HC, and so much Karo, I imagine we're in for one heck of a bounce. However, first we need two tests without food, so he'll have to endure three more pokes tonight (I gave him more HC and karo at +5). Sorry, Cinco.
