Yesterday's Condo and Sasha Update

Last night Cinco was a flat yellow kitty. Today he's flat blue. Any chance we can have flat green tonight? Please? Pretty please with FD salmon on top??? ;-)

His appy is still outstanding. His eye is still looking better, although still not back to normal. He's sooooooooooo tired of getting drops put in it!! I can't say that I blame him. When we were gone this past weekend, I spent a lot of time thinking about all he's been through, and I came up with this question: why are we fighting so hard to save this eye? If he is going to continue to have one infection after another, why don't we just remove the eye and have done? What would be the benefit of keeping it? He can't see out of it. So that's what I'm planning to ask the OV next week. It just seems to me that, in the long run, it would be better for Cinco and for us, if we take the eye out. It might be expensive, but so are the drops and continuous OV visits, and I think it would pay for itself in a short period of time, based on what we've been through so far. I just think he would be better off without it. Any thoughts?

We're still trying to make up our minds about whether or not to do chemo with Sasha. I'd be grateful for input from anyone that's been there. I haven't gotten a return call from the oncologist yet, so I just sent her an e-mail with my list of questions (I added a couple I thought of this morning). Thank you to all who have offered their good wishes for her! I did one aloe treatment on her yesterday and she seemed to enjoy it. I plan to do another today.

Today is cat box scrubbing day, so I'd better get moving.

Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Praying for Amy's and Lyresa's DFs and Elise's DM. I pray for all of our LL family, beans and kitties, every night. Love you all! :YMHUG:

Nice blues for Cinco today. That's an interesting question about they eyes. It will be interesting to see what the OV says. If he can't see out of it at all, I think it is something to consider.

I'm glad Sasha enjoyed the aloe. Sending prayers and hugs. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 8/27 Cinco AMPS 197 +4 118 +6 135

I think you are right about cinco's eye. No advice about sasha but you might put something about the chemo in your subject line to get ppl with experience with it.

Re: 8/27 Cinco AMPS 197 +4 118 +6 135 Chemo for Civvie?

Cinco's looking pretty good today!! But be careful what you wish for...You know how these kitties can be...You might get a green surf in the 30's!

I think your reasoning on Cinco's eye makes perfect sense. He's blind...nothing you can do for him now is going to change that, so unless there's a reason the vet thinks he really needs to keep it, it sure seems like it would be a kindness to him to just get rid of it once and for all so he doesn't have to ever worry about pain from it again...and the stress it puts on him when he hates those drops so much can't really help his BG or his overall health

As for Sasha, I've never had to deal with a cancer diagnosis, so I'm really not of much help there, but I have heard from a lot of people who've had chemo on their cats and have said it was easier on them than they had feared. I think cats handle it much better than people do, with less side effects. I think since you've gone this far with her, and she's done so awesome, that it might make sense to give her the best shot possible at a long life. If you start the chemo and it makes her terribly sick or miserable, you could rethink it at that point and stop if it's too much for her, but for now, I'd say fight the best fight and give her every chance .....but that's just my opinion....You have to do what you feel is best for her

Sending "clarity of thought" vines for you and DH (now there's a new type of vine!)

Re: 8/27 Cinco AMPS 197 +4 118 +6 135 Chemo for Civvie?

What a tough decision....but I guess the only thing to think about with Cinco's eye is the risk involved with the surgery. But, I don't have any personal experience in that department, and you do. It does sound like he would be a ton happier without all those drops, and since he can't see out of that eye anyway, I agree...what's the point? It is a very valid question to ask the OV.

Sasha's situation is tough, too....I have done chemo with a kitty, but it was a very long time ago and things are different now, so it is an apples-n-oranges comparison. But, in general, they are treated very differently than people are and they seem to tolerate it much better...not that that helps you much  ! You're an awesome bean...I know the answer will come to you.....

In the meantime, sending hugs and prayers for all of you!!

Re: 8/27 Cinco AMPS 197 +4 118 +6 135 Chemo for Civvie?

Hi Trisha,

I know that Carolyn (carolynandlatte) had an eye removed from a civvie she adopted several years ago. It was elective surgery at the time because the kitty had a condition that would eventually have led to her losing the eye. Perhaps PM Carolyn for her advice. She is very knowledgeable.

Sorry that I can't help you with your chemo question. No experience there. But we are sending a lot of vines to Sasha, and vines to Cinco, too.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 8/27 Cinco AMPS 197 +4 118 +6 135 Chemo for Civvie?

Nice set of blues today - seems to be a few of them in LL today. :-D :-D :-D

The kitty I grew up with got an infected eye, and back then there were no OV's, so out it came. From what I remember, it didn't seem to bother him any. Darn cat still jumped fences.

Regarding Sasha, I'd most be interested in short and long term side effects. She might lose some whiskers, hair where they shave to take blood/insert meds may not grow back, appy may be off so you may need cerenia for a couple of days, she will be immune suppressed so you'll have to keep her away from sick kitties and no raw food - don't think she gets that anyway. And you'll have to be careful handling LB contents (use gloves) for a few days. Ask if there are any implication for a multi-kitty household - I don't think so. That's what I remember but you'll want to confirm and see what else there is. I did get to talk to the onco vet a lot and we discussed cats as well as dogs. As Chris says, chemo doesn't seem to bother them as much as humans.

Re: 8/27 Cinco PMPS 181 +2 189

Sure hope that +2 is a food spike.... Still blue.

Thanks for stopping by, Carla, Julie, Chris, Amy, Ella and Wendy.

Wendy, Cinco recovered so well from the first eye removal, and that included a tumor. I just think it might be better to put him in the cone for that recovery and then not ever have to do it again for an eye issue. This herpes virus never goes away, and if it's gonna keep causing issues, I just don't see why we should put him through that. I will add some of your points to my list of questions for the oncologist, too. Thanks.

Ella, I appreciate the info. I think I've had enough experience with the eye removal, though.

Appreciate all the vines and prayers.

Just got in from a walk with the DH (yay! He's taking my little lecture on health seriously!). Gotta get dinner going. BBL.

Re: 8/27 Cinco PMPS 181 +2 189

I put in a post asking about the chemo but so far no info. I also asked about the digestive enzymes for J.D. I'll ask my friend to bump up my posts if I don't hear anything tonight. Strangely, Tiffany didn't get that drug from what I saw in my paperwork and it is used often for lymphoma so that vet will know lots about it. I didn't see any posts from him at all today so he must have been too busy at his practice.
