Yesterday's Condo

Just a quick note as I scarf down a trip tip sandwich (Yum!). Just got home and have to go get in the shower to get ready to head to the bowling alley (Cinco permitting).

Cinco was licking away at his foot last night when I was ready to go to bed, so I bandaged it. DH was already asleep, so I was solo, and it was a struggle! When I was done, I was concerned that I had it on a little tight, so after I was all ready for bed I ran down to check and make sure his toes were warm. They were. This morning when I got up, the foot was swollen and soaking wet - he'd obviously been licking it, and the bandage too. I took the bandage off right away, but now what to do? I called his regular vet, but they couldn't see him until Wednesday. Since I'd already decided to switch him to UCD for his routine care, I called and they had an appointment available in two hours! So off we went, Cinco fighting to get out of the carrier the whole way. I'm sooooo glad I went. I just love the way they do things! We had three students that we saw first, and they were very thorough about taking his history and examining him. They were so sweet with him, too. Then the doctor came in, and they'd briefed her on everything. She, too was thorough. Her opinion was that the neuropathy in Cinco's back legs made what would be a minor irritation to another cat into a much bigger deal for him, and unless we took care of the reason it was bothering him so much, he'd keep going after the leg. Made total sense to me! She consulted with a neurologist about it (this is why I LOVE going to UCD) and they discussed giving him Gabapentin. The neurologist wasn't sure it would work - not sold on results in cats at this point. So we came home with Bupe, every eight hours, a topical steroid that has some AB in it (they took a scraping from the leg and there was some bacteria), to be applied twice a day for three days and then once a day for 3-4 more days. They put a bigger collar on him (poor guy - I'll try to get a picture) so he can't reach the foot. I'm also to apply a warm compress for five minutes three times a day for the next two days to get the swelling down. It was hard to fit Cinco and that huge collar in the carrier, and before we left the parking lot he had it off! I put it back on when we got home, gave him the bupe and a little of the ointment, and now he's pouting in his favorite spot in front of the family room sofa. I feel badly that I made things worse by putting the bandage on too tight, but I'm glad it made me take him in. I really feel better about things, now that we have some idea what the problem is and a plan to address it.

Sasha ate her entire breakfast in two sessions about an hour apart. :-D All else is well.

I gotta go get moving. Unless Cinco gives us a low PMPS, I'll be going to the bowling alley, so I'd better go get cleaned up (didn't even have time to shower before going to UCD).

Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Prayers continue for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF & DH, Lisa's DF, and Elise's DM.

Wow....what a day!!! Poor Cinco...an even BIGGER cone  . My goodness on him getting it off so quickly, too! I agree, though....it sounds like he was seen by an awesome team (including his MamaBean and PapaBean) that is getting him on the road to recovery.

I'm glad Sasha ate well this morning. I hope you have a wonderful evening at the alley tonight!!

Re: 10/13 Cinco AMPS 134 +4 75 +5 101 Vet

Oh dear!  What a day! I'm just catching up on the last couple of condos (been in holiday mode). I did like the pic of Cinco relaxing on the mat coneless. We have the same mat here and it's a fav. And that Sasha pic is as adorable as ever.

Sounds like stellar service at the "new" vet. Poor Cinco and the larger cone now. Poor you on medicating with that cone on. Hope he gives you good numbers for a night out.

Re: 10/13 Cinco AMPS 134 +4 75 +5 101 Vet

Hi Tricia, just stopping in to send healing vines for Cinco! My moms kitty had to wear a cone for weeks for her scratching herself raw from allergies many years ago. I felt so sorry seeing her trying to walk and eat with it on, but in the long run, it was the best thing for her. Sounds like he is pretty smart to have gotten it off so fast in the car. Hope you have a nice night bowling.

Poor Cinco. At least you now what's going on now and have a plan for treatment. I'm glad Sasha ate for you.

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96!

Under the heading of "be careful what you wish for", we bring you tonight's PMPS!

Looks like I'll be home this evening! I always hope to get to shoot green, but NOT ON MONDAY NIGHT!! I sent Mark on to bowling without me. I told him I might come later, but it's highly doubtful. It's an hour drive, and by the time I'd be comfortable leaving Cinco, it would almost be get there, say hello and go home! :YMSIGH: For this I showered, washed & styled my hair, and put on makeup. I hope my kitties appreciate how nice I look for them!

Anyway, thanks for visiting us, Amy, Wendy, Laura and Carla. Yes, we are much happier having him seen at UCD. There is the added bonus of Dr. Richard Nelson, an Internal Medicine specialists who focuses on diabetes!

We did t/f/s with the cone in place. Cinco can just barely reach his food in those wonderful dishes I got him, but it's a stretch. I put water in one, as I don't think he can get close enough to his water dispenser now.

Since I'll probably be home all evening, I'll attempt to do one of the warm compress treatments a little later. Hopefully I can get two in before bed. I really should have tested him when I got him home - I could probably have guessed he'd be low at shot time. I suspect he was low while were at the vet, as he was very vocal and restless. I didn't take my meter. Perhaps I should in future. It actually would have been good to show those students how we test! ohmygod_smile Next time!

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96!

What a Day! But how great to have a resource like UCD so close. I love our vet, but it would be nice to have access to more specialists sometimes.

Sorry you missed your night out, but you may be on to something, putting on makeup to trick them into going green!

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

   Ann! You are so right. Oy vey! So now, he's at 158 at +1 (I retested to be sure). Is it safe to leave him for four hours? I just gave him a huge bowl of 8% and he's happily chowing down. I'm going to toss a coin here in a minute. I'm just not sure.... nailbite_smile

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

Sounds like these vets know what to do for Cinco so yea for that. Sorry about the bowling night but better that it's because of a green pmps than another vet trip, right? I hope he gives you a good run since you had to stay home to make it worth your while. I hope the meds make the biting stop so that he won't need the cone. He sure has been through a lot lately.

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

Oh that's such a great pic.... I wish I had found it.....
it's given me a great smile......

sorry you had to stay in.....

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

What did you do? Did you stay or go? The way Max was today I would have said stay. I guess you could carb him up but I doubt that you want to do that. The suspense is killing me!

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

Oh no! Sorry to hear that Cinco had some trouble today, but it sounds like you got excellent help. The bigger cone sounds like a good idea, even though I'm sure Cinco disagrees. I hope he starts feeling better very soon!! Don't feel bad about putting the bandage on tighter - you were just trying to help him! I'm sure he would have been messing with it either way.

^That was from Billie! She has been getting more involved in condos lately. A few nights ago, she typed something in her own condo, and last night she typed a message to Gracie. I'm guessing that's a get well soon message to Cinco. She says he'll know what it means.

Re: 10/13 Cinco PMPS 96! +1 158 Stay or Go?

Well, I took a leap of faith and left. I'm at the bowling alley. Cinco was already making serious inroads on the bowl full of 8% I left (I think he's at close to two cans, the small ones, of Max Cat Savory Duck). With my luck he'll be pink when I get home. I just really wanted to get out, since we stayed home all weekend. I sure hope I made the right call.

Cinco was fine when I got home. Every bite of food I left was gone, and he ate the snack I offered without hesitation. We then did the warm compress thing. He wasn't fond of it, but there was no blood shed. Did I mention I got my finger nicked today at the vet's when I put my hand in the carrier to try to calm him? He also got me on the leg last night when I was bandaging his leg. One of the vet students today offered to trim his nails and I was happy to accept. DH appreciated being relieved of that duty!

So I got my garlic pretzel bite fix and watched DH's team lose two out of three games. I'm not much of a lucky charm. I tried to post from the alley, but the Board and my tablet don't seem to get along and it took me almost an hour to get that short post done. Weird things kept happening.

I'm hoping for a quiet night. I gave Cinco his Bupe and will apply the ointment and test again just before I go to bed. That should be fun!
