All good here this morning. Appy is good. Breffis was mostly eaten on the footstool, a few bites on the picnic table and then finished off in the window. Zener did a long yard patrol. All seems in order out there. He is napping on the filing cabinet helping with his condo. He has his head ducked, looking as cute as possible, to get some extra petting. :-D :-D :-D

Anne has been doing some research on gastric paresis. We are already doing most of it: cerenia, cisipride (not doing this one), multiple small meals, and antihistimine. Turns out that cyproheptadine is an antihistimine that we use for appy stimulant. We had remarked that he seems to feel better with the cypro so we will give it a little more freely. Sienne had wondered if there were any interactions among the drugs that Zener gets, but Anne didn't find anything. Another option is to give him more zobaline. He gets 6 mg daily (3 mg pills) and I recall that Jill had said up to 10 mg per day so we could give him another one.

Thinking of ailing kitties and beans: Georgia's Simon, Carla's Lucky, Lyresa's son Cody. Congrats to Zoey: OTJ!!! :-D :-D I'm off to the farmer's market.

ETA
Anne here, I sent email to our vet too with all Zener's medications and dosages to ask her about possible interactions that might affect his neurological status, since he has seemed a little more wobbly lately. Still waiting on her reply.

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195

Hi Liz & Anne. Zener might give you a nice flat blue day today. I hope you can discover what's causing him to be wobbly?

I wasn't aware that a cat could "use" up to 10mg a day. I thought that most of anything over 5-6mg would be peed away. I might give PF a bit more and see if it helps. He's getting 6mg also for his neuropathy. It has helped.

Hope you gals have a great day.

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195

Always so glad to hear about a happy appy for Z! Looks like he's easing on down...are we working on a slide, Zener?

Have a great day, guys!

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195

Nice breffis and yard patroll report on Zener. Hope you get some answers from the Vet as to if there are any intereactions affecting Zener's wobbly state. I was going to ask yesterday, what exactly is gastric paresis? I should look it up myself, but since Anne is already researching it, I'm a little lazy today or tired after the laundry trekking back and forth. That's a better excuse. :-D
Have a nice day everyone.

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195

Hi Zener, how about a slide down to green today. I'm glad everything was in order in the yard. I hope your wobbly gets a little better. Maybe the meds will help a bit.
Have a good day!

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195

Good luck with the meds research. I hope you find a good combination to help out Z-man.
Looks like a blue surf today ~ or maybe he's already on the shore of the lagoon...
Enjoy your day!

Gastric paresis literally means "stomach weakness". What I am learning is that diabetes can affect some of the nerves to parts of the digestive system just as it does nerves to the extremities. It most often affects the stomach and small intestine and leads to slow transit time with food remaining in the stomach and upper small intestine or moving along very slowly. Symptoms include bloating, gas (burping or the other end), stomach cramps shortly after eating and consequently inappetance. There is much more research on gastric paresis in humans with Type I diabetes (the kind that more often onsets in kids) and not so much in cats as they do not have this type of diabetes often. Still, there are a few research articles on cats, but not the best quality. It's always important to be cautious in interpreting human studies and treatment to cats. The treatment in cats is much like treatment for IBD.

Well, it looks like the bounce is not quite over yet. flip_cat Weeble wobble low yellows and blues again. If he follows his latest pattern  , it will be another cycle or two, so patience pants in place.

Zener did well last night and this morning with smaller, more frequent meals and is outside resting comfortably in his favorite summer napping spot - up next to our house, in the shade and of course, in the dirt. He seems to be feeling more comfortable today and is getting around a little better too. Poo patrol had it easy, there was a deposit in the litter box this morning.

@John - not looking like flat blues this cycle yet.

@Amy & TrixieCat - not looking like a slide this cycle, he seems to prefer night time sliding, not the best for only one bean on duty.

@Ann & Maggie - our vet is really good about getting back to us, so we will get email next week I reckon. She has done research on the combination of meds as different ones were prescribed, but it doesn't hurt to be sure and safe! The only med that has caused him problems, so far, was reglan. We used that over a year ago when he had completely stopped eating after a dental and we had to syringe feed. The reglan caused a significant increase in his cerebellar hypoplasia tremors. So, that one is not an option for poor GI motility with our guy.

@Doreen & PeePee - boy howdy, we would love to see a nice slide to green, maybe later!

@Josie & Ripley - we'll keep everyone posted what our vet has to say about med combinations. Looks like our guy is going to stay flat yellows, hmmmm.

I (Anne, the night duty bean) leave at 3pm to start my travels to Denmark. Staying at an airport hotel in Phoenix tonight for a 5:30am flight to start off. I'll have to be at the airport verrry early. ~O) @-) I arrive in Denmark mid day Tuesday and our first meeting to prepare for the tournament is at 8pm that night, with work starting at 9am Wed morning. No time to adjust, we get right to it. I will have internet access so hope to peek in at LL every night.

Wow, thanks Anne for explaining the Gastric paresis and how it affects Zener. I'm so sorry he has to go thru all that with his tummy and digestion, poor baby. That's where the tummy massages come in and help him. You both are doing everything you can to help and research and also have a great Vet. Zener is a very lucky kitty.
Sending safe travel vines, Anne.

Re: 6/2 Zener AMPS 203;+2.5 195;+6 232

I hope you hear back from the vet soon about the meds interaction. Hopefully Zener will clear the bounce soon. I hope Anne has a safe trip tomorrow.

Hi Guys,
I think Anne must already be off to Phoenix and then to Denmark and we wish her a good trip, good planning sessions, and some nice meals. Don't forget the Aquavit!

Zener sounds like he is feeling better today and we hope that he continues to feel better and better. The meds and possible conflicts sound daunting. It's a good thing you both have lots of experience and know how he reacts to the various things.

Have a good evening. Liz, wishing you a good tenure as BIC. Zener, be good while Mamabean Anne is away. Tillie, keep an eye on things!

Thanks for visiting us,

Ella & Rusty (who is indeed in residence at the lagoon today!!)

Re: 6/2 Zener PMPS 334

Blech! Zener seems to feel fine. I did give him some cypro, since he wasn't too keen to eat at PS. He is very busy hunting birds in the back yard.

OT: Anne is indeed on her way. She's on the shuttle to overnight in Phoenix then catch a 5:30 am flight. Not her best time but she does love to travel. :-D

I am very sorry to hear of Alex's passing. Thinking of Caryl, I know she's heartbroken.
Liz

Re: 6/2 Zener PMPS 334

Hi Liz.....I have nothing intelligent to add about Zener's tummy problem. This post did however have me looking up paresis.
It had me thinking about my own tummy issues, but thankfully, it doesn't apply. This board is always educational.
You and Anne amaze me, with your knowledgeable care for Zener. What wonderful mamabeans you are.

Re: 6/2 Zener PMPS 334

Interesting research about the gastric paresis. I hope some solutions can be found for Zener soon. Blech on the pink but at least he seems to have appetite for birds.

Sending safe travel vines to Anne. I have some fond memories of the desserts in Copenhagen, not so much all the fish for breakfast.

Re: 6/2 Zener PMPS 334

So glad Zener is feeling more himself :-D Safe "trip" wishes for Anne and a "non-eventful" home time for you Liz :-D
