Hi all, sorry to be so blunt, but cat poop question:

my cat Spike didn't poop at all yesterday, is this ok? normal?
Since he switched to all wet food and all low carb food and since he started the Lantus (insulin), he has been pooping less and sometimes very small quantities.

Before he was diagnosed with diabetes, I would give him a little canned pumpkin every now and then, b/c even before his diabetes his poop was so dense and dry. I gave him a little canned pumpkin last night, I hope that is okay to give a diabetic cat ???
Thanks in advance (TIA)

The diet change may have an effect on Spike's GI patterns (especially if you were feeding a high fibre kibble before the food transition). Info from catinfo.org about diet and poop quantity/consistency plus a discussion of constipation and its treatment (with pictures) can be found part-way down the following page:

Among other things, I keep a record of the time, weight and physical properties of faeces Saoirse produces. It's a good thing to do because it helps you determine what is 'normal' for a particular kitty.

When I switched to canned, I noticed a HUGE difference in the poopbox. Not just frequency, but smell and consistency. The quantity dropped, no more runny or loose poop, and a dramatic decrease in foul gag-while-you-scoop-eyes-watering smell. I would just watch him. Even humans don't always go everyday. Particularly true if you just recently switched him, but any kind of stress (a stray he saw out the window?) could cause tummy trouble. If he seems 'off' or goes more then a day, see a vet.
