2/25 What would be considered an MC food?

I'm feeding FF Classic Pate, and the baby food Beechnut Classic meats for when Callie needs coaxing to eat (LC foods), and I have FF Gravy Lovers on hand for possible hypos (HC foods), but I don't know what MC food would be. I've been wading :bookworm: through all the food info on the stickies, but I guess I'm missing it. :confused:Just hoping for a brand name similar to the above that she'll eat...Thanks in advance. :) BTW, I know she doesn't need it now. I just wanted to have some on hand. :bighug:
 
Not sure if you've seen this, but it is a food chart listing the various protein, fat, carbohydrate, phosphorus and calorie content of over 100 brands of food. The info was compiled by people spending many hours of sleuthing. Most of us seem to use it just for the carb info, but if our cats have other things going on and we need lower phosphorus foods etc. it's great for that too.
This chart is dated September 2012, I'm not sure if there are updates to it. Maybe someone will weigh in if so.

Thanks for the link. I had looked at it, but it is kind of overwhelming, and I wasn't sure of the percentages. The amount of research people put in on it is amazing. I almost didn't know where to start with it, but after looking at it again, it made more sense.

One good piece of advice I've read is to steer with LC food unless/until they approach 50 on a human meter or 68 on a pet meter - ie. near hypo. Then it's time for HC food. Maybe you could use MC when just above 50/68?

Don't feel bad. ;) It wasn't necessarily an obvious place to find it. I knew I had seen it somewhere as well and it took me a while to let my subconcous lead me to the answer.

So MC food from above 50 to what? Since she's been diagnosed she's only had LC food. Well, once in a while, a couple of the Temptations which I know is a no-no, but she won't get near the Pure Bites. I actually put a Pure Bite in her mouth this morning just so she could taste it, but she very purposefully spit out and glared at me. LOL

I think it's a judgment call based on how carb sensitive your kitty is. No hard and fast rules, only trial and error. Teasel had very low numbers last week and I went from LC directly to HC and then HC with honey to steer him through.

Looking at Callie's spreadsheet I see that she dropped a lot from her AMPS this morning but note that 92 is a perfectly safe number on a human meter and I wouldn't intervene at this time with MC food if it were Uncle. Also note that she didn't drop much at all between her +4 & +6
I'm not an expert SS reader, so if you would like more eyes on her today, you certainly could ask.

Okay, so I'll just monitor her closely? I've got the cold hands and jumpy stomach going on here now with that 92 even though I know it's not that low. I'm just not used to it with her. I'm thrilled it went down though. I did the curve today to see if she maybe needs a dose increase, but I guess it's obvious she doesn't need one.

Looking good! I think you can breathe. :) BTW - remember how frightened you were of testing BG at the beginning? Now look at where you are!

I have A LOT of experience "steering with food" so feel free to take a look at Uncle's spreadsheet when you have time. You will notice that in the far right column I have notated every meal and carb % of that meal when he was low or headed low and if I used food to keep him safe. Having all LC, MC & HC on hand was perfect for that and as Kris said you can mix them together to get what ever % you are going for!

The first time Uncle went into the 70's I freaked out and fed him an entire 3 oz can of FF Grilled Turkey Feast in Gravy. I think it was 21% or so. OOPS! We all had a good laugh. Everyone here has helped learn so much with caring empathy!
I'm going to take the dog for a spin. Will check in later to see how the curve is going.

Now Sammy is straining to go to the bathroom. :arghh:Not sure if it's peeing or pooping he's having trouble with. Gave him 1/8 tsp Miralax last night. History of constipation. I was treating that with Laxatone, but with the molasses and corn syrup, I was concerned with him developing diabetes. So I've been giving him mineral oil since he liked it, but the past few days he wouldn't lick that up. He just tried again, and there were a few drops of bloody mucus. I just gave him another 1/4 tsp of Miralax. I should have done that a few days ago. :oops:Don't know if it's constipation or a plugged urethra. He's only been eating the FF canned food. I wish he would do these things when it's regular office hours and not an emergency visit. I'll watch him closely, but I am seeing an emergency room visit looming. Callie's BG at +8 was 141 so I'm so glad I just gave her LC. Thanks for advice everyone. :bighug:

Thank you! Goodness, we need some healthy furbabies for a while. Since January 2016, we've had one thing after another. Big things...not little things. I know I'm not alone in that, but it gets very wearing. Sammy and I will gladly accept those good pee vines. :cat::bighug:
 
Cats can go about 14 hours without peeing. Why do I know this? Because I had my civvie sequestered in a bathroom to give me a specimen and the little stinker wouldn't go. I looked it up and 14 hours is the tops for cats to urinate.

Thank you. I do know, but I really appreciate you telling me. I would have sent the same warning. Our cat, Zeke, had a plugged urethra fairly often until we had a surgery done to correct the problem. I got so I could tell by his coat when it was starting, and I got him in right away.

I don't know if it was him straining to go poo or him trying to pee. If he was trying to pee, he is definitely sick with something. We are following him around right now to try to catch him doing something. He isn't caterwauling or acting like he's in pain at all. And he just wanted to eat. I gave him some food with LOTS of water in it, and I'll give him another 1/4 tsp Miralax later tonight. We will definitely get him in right away if he starts acting like he's in any pain. But this straining is really a worry, and then the blood...I won't let it go on very long.

I wish I knew. If only they could talk, you know?! If he could only pee the amount he did, I think it's a plugged urethra, and maybe as you suggested a bladder infection. If he is straining to poo, then maybe the blood was from some irritated tissue from that. It had a kind of mucous membrane with it, and that sounds more poo than pee to me., but I don't know. Waiting...but if he starts acting like he's in pain, we'll take him in right away. He's their most well-known after hours patient. He can't seem to have anything happen during regular hours. Thank you!

LOL Those personal experiences, huh?! We'll watch him closely. Hoping he does something soon. I think I'm going to sequester him shortly so I can care for Callie.

Gizmo had blood with his last uti. I caught him trying to pee in the hallway (completely unlike him but he was still recovering from a panc flare). I waited and didn't disturb him and the result was a spot of blood and no urine. I took a paper towel and wiped it up, threw his ass in the carrier and off to the vet we went. I guess you could say it was kinda mucusie.

I am kicking myself in my bottom (also not unintended :)) because I didn't start the Miralax sooner. :banghead: I put him in the bathroom. He's definitely in a bad mood so maybe he is constipated. Poor boy! I hate it when my lack of doing something or else doing something hurts them. That's what I was thinking with the mucous also. I don't know what I would rather it be...I guess constipation if I can only get him to go.

That's good to know that the mucus was there for the UTI also. Thanks! I'm watching him. I'm going to look up how to spell mucus. It looks wrong both ways I've spelled it.

If it wasn't after hours and having to call a vet in, I would already have him in. It's not even the extra cost. If he starts acting like he's in pain at all, we'll have him in, dragging a vet in on a Saturday night or not.
