Ideal blood glucose curve?

Hello, Penny eats low carb food and Zobaline seems to be helping with her neurapothy. The Vetsulin website shows an "Ideal Blood Glucose Curve" and Penny's numbers look similar. Her pre-shot numbers are still high. Is there something else I can do for her to get those numbers lower?

She's only been on Vetsulin a few weeks. I've learned so much from this forum and I want to do everything I can. Thank you.

Yes, her curves are typical Vetsulin curves. It's the in the nature of the insulin to give steep drops from highs at the PS tests. Some cats will have a flatter curve but they aren't typical. It's always wise to dose Vetsulin to have a little wiggle room at nadir - ie., no lower a nadir than 90 - 100. I see that you gave 2.5 u last night. That might get her down a bit at nadir.

Some cats have a flatter curve on ProZinc which is an in and out insulin like Vetsulin but gentler in its action. The depot insulins like Lantus and Levemir are usually the best for flattening curves although as we always say here - ECID (Every Cat Is Different). :)

And Teasel is lucky to have YOU. Thanks for responding. We're so lucky to have found this forum. Only 3 weeks in and Penny is so much more active and interested. She hopped over me in bed the other day! We wouldn't be in such good shape without all the help. Thank God for you.
 
Also, as she spends more time in normal numbers around nadir times the PS numbers should gradually start coming down on their own too :). Patience in the sugar marathon dance :bighug:
 
Hi there... can you add to your signature some info such as date diagnosed, insulin she's on (I know it's vetsulin, but this way it's written there in case you are on the main health forum), what kind of meter you are using, and what the food is that you are feeding.

Hello Janet, I saw another thread where you have a suggested how much to dose. Can you advise me? I have been very afraid Penny would get too low and have been very cautious. Today for the first time she was green: 56 and I got scared and put some honey on her lunch. I could sure use some help. (My vet suggested we go up to 3.0 units but I’m really afraid to give her too much.).

Also, we are on the 43 day of our first Vetsulin vial. I read your post that it was ok to keep using the vial. Her numbers jump all over since I haven’t been good at dosing and I’m not sure I would know if the Vetsulin potency declines.

I disagree that you haven't been good at dosing! You might want to make note in your comment section on your spreadsheet that you added honey to the food. Looks like you didn't over so it though because it didn't shoot back up excessively high. That was a strange number for her to get when she had been in the 100's prior at similar preshots. 214 is a great preshot.... And 1 was probably what I would have tried too. So much of it is trial and error.

Were you able to get any data last night after the 1 unit?

It's hard for me to give you dosing advice as your numbers are a bit inconsistent. I never would have expected that 56 out of nowhere. At that point (5.5) he was most likely as low as it was going to go so a small amount of regular food was all you needed, but I get how it was surprising to see and made you nervous.

You might wanna dial the dose back to 2 at those high numbers and see what happens.
I think the cat is bouncing and you can stop the bounce by lowering the dose. When the numbers drop way more than 50% they have a tendency to bounce back up into high numbers again. It also looks like your cat may nadir at about 6 hours. When you can try to get a +5 AND a +6 to see how the numbers compare.

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t test her last night. I appreciate your advice.
 
I have just got home from the vets after having my Ciara's blood sugar tested and it was 19 down from 26 which i thought was good but i think the vet did not think this so i have to return on Monday
I am so nervous giving the injections so not sure i am getting it in properly
Can anyone tell me is 19 very high ?

Yes, 19 is higher than you want. I think you've already started your own thread here, right? You'll get more attention on your questions if you put then there. Ask any/all questions you have about injection technique, etc. in that thread and we'll try to help.
