Repost from main forum Skipped 4 doses, not quite sure what to do. I know there's a risk of ketones, but not sure how worried I need to be. He earned an automatic reduction, but with his numbers coming in close to 100 after stalling, I'm not even sure I'm comfortable with token dose. Maybe tomorrow I'll just feed and shoot a token if he comes in around 130/140 again, and not stall. Thoughts? *Update, skipped 5 doses now. I will try shooting 0.1 (or my best estimate of it) in the morning if he's low again
Vetsulin does hit fast and drop the BG levels low. But you are there to test, have your hypo toolkit ready with MC and HC foods. Want to double check, that you are giving Mr. Kitty his food 20-30 minutes before you give him the shot. That can slow down the drop. Next question, is when else do you feed him during the cycle? Would you please put that info in the Remarks column on the SS? There may be some adjusting to the feeding schedule that could help, which is why I'm requesting you do those remarks.
I just added it to yesterday's line in the SS. Yes, feeding him 20-30 mins before shot. He has free access to low carb all day (I usually can't be there to do smaller separate feedings), I remove the food 2 hrs before each PS. He gets it back once I know whether or not I'm doing a shot; if doing a shot I wait 30 mins or so. I do have the hypo kit ready to go. He came in a bit higher this morning...thinking I'll try 0.25.
I am fairly sure 0.25ui would be the right dose ATM. He is holding up pretty well when the shots are skipped, doing so well overall too. It's amazing how being off dry food does to their condition. Not wanting to knock on wood, but remission might be on the horizon! Fingers crossed BTW stupid question time... what does "stalling" mean?
Thanks! And I sure hope so Stalling is when you get a pre shot number that's too low to give an injection. So you "stall" - do not feed, and wait another 20-40 mins and check again. If the number goes down, generally skip the dose. If it climbs back up, depending on the number you can choose to stall again, give the shot, or skip. For Vetsulin, the recommended number is 200. But I'm comfortable still shooting around 170 since I know how he reacts...any lower and I usually try to stall
Oh thanks @FrostD for the info! Yes I have been getting that kind of numbers occasionally, shoot or not to shoot??? - I usually just wait for a few hours. It's difficult not to give my boy his food after the reading, by now he tightly associates the testing with nomnom, so much so that when he sees I am getting ready for the test, he voluntarily comes to the spot and gets in the position He is like Mr. Kitty, on the threshold of becoming independent but not quite yet, and he is mostly getting bare minimum dose (0.1u), so I go ahead and shoot when it is about 120-130 or more, and watch for any undesirable symptoms closely around 3-6hrs after the shot. Fortunately he is holding up well this way. Occasionally he starts to give me ugly numbers (200+), @Deb & Wink adviced me to raise the dose to 0.25 for a few cycle, and surely enough, his number came right back down and became stable again. It is really tricky, every cat reacts different and there seems to be no black and white guideline for all cats. Let's hope both of our kitties will continue on the right direction!
Mr. Kitty does still need some insulin. Do try that 0.25U dose that Oliver's dad suggested. @FrostD Good description of the stalling technique.
