On 09/06 we started insulin 0.25 units, lowered the BG a bit and then we had the dental on Thursday 16/06. No shot on Thursday morning.
The vet cleaned his teeth, no extraction was required, some beginning of inflammation was identified and the vet gave him antibiotics for it.

The anesthesia was very hard on him and gave us a crazy scare when we brought him home. For a while he was unresponsive :nailbiting: and the vet suggested we test his BG out of fear of hypoglycemia, he was 311 :blackeye::blackeye: Chico has not seen such high BG for way over 1 year. As soon as he saw us getting ready to go to the emergency with him he raised his head in sign of protest  poor little Chico

thank God that is all behind us and he started behaving more like his normals self

we didn’t give him insulin for 2 days because of low BG, clearly his pancreas panicked over that 311 and overworked itself. Yesterday DB measured 122@ AMPS and decided to give him his insulin shot.

In our opinion he needs the insulin since in that 1 week he was getting it he never showed signs of getting too low, with the dental it looked good for only 1 cycle, the second cycle his BG started rising so we decided dental didn’t help (i am sure it was long due anyway so no regrets there).

We started giving Chico a supplement for his liver, hopefully it will help regenerate the liver.

Could someone with a more experienced eye please check his SS and advice if there is anything else we should consider or are doing wrong?

PS will fill in AMPS in half an hour

Oh poor Chico, and you for his homecoming. Maybe he was in shock at having a pink?!! Glad he is feeling better and glad for you that his teeth were ok. It is not cheap!! Good luck getting him back on track. :bighug:

Yeah teeth is not cheap but much worse is to pay for blood tests and receive very shady results that you cannot trust :(
Thank you Liz for your support :bighug:

Hi Marina. I’m so sorry you had such a scare and glad he’s doing better. I think you were right to shoot this morning. It can take a couple weeks or longer to see if the cleaning will help him get back into remission. How is he acting in terms of IBD? Eating well? Normal poop? I hope all is good.

Thank you for your feedback, we are following him so if any changes will appear we will come back for an opinion :bighug:

Otherwise he is fine, he is eating well, has normal stools (sometimes a little more loose) and acting normal, hope none of that will change.

Oh my, I can imagine how scary that must have been! I remember being so nervous when both Bandit and Budge had their dental. Bandit's BG also dropped the day after the dental despite the skipped shot but stayed high for a while after. There were no extractions or infections, but I guess any pain/soreness from the scaling keeps them high.

Give it 6-8 cycles for the depot to rebuild and if needed, take him up. We tend to be more aggressive (in dosing) with cats who are trying for a second or third chance at remission. His numbers looked good before the dental though, so he should get back there once the depot rebuilds.

Thank you Bhooma for sharing Bandit’s experience, it is very comforting to know that it is “normal” :bighug::bighug:

We will keep in mind the dosing advice for cats that are going for a second remission, fingers crossed it works o_Oo_O

I had to be reminded recently about hypoglycemia:
"Some cats may have NO symptoms whatsoever..."

As soon as things normalize at home, our Leo needs a dental. Chico has a great caregiver!

thank you for your support :bighug:

We were’t expecting him to be hypo since he didn’t get a dose that morning and for Chico stress is always a BG increasing not decreasing factor, nonetheless when the vet suggested to test of course my heart sank into my heals :nailbiting:

with that said we still remember what to do in case of hypo and had the honey near by since the first day we restarted insulin o_O
