Episodes are triggered by stress. Symptoms can present like UTIs.
@Angela & Cleo has experience since Cleo also has IC.
Good Morning. My Cleo has idiopathic cystitis

and is currently having an episode.
We make sure she stays as hydrated as possible by feeding wet food only and adding extra water to her food too. We also pick food that has a higher moisture content and lower ash.
We have the feliway plugins, one right by the litterbox.
A lower entry senior litter box is great. I also have some puppy pads I put around the box when she's having an episode. It's quite painful when they urinate so they'll go right outside the box because it's more comfortable when squatting.
You'll want to get some pain medication when Baby is having an episode.
Stress is the "cause". Unfortunately it's not like they can tell us why they're stressing out. Environment enrichment is important. I swap out her toys and move the scratching posts and perches so she can get a different vantage point.
My Vet also told me that higher BGs will spill glucose over to the urine and that sugary urine wreaks havoc on the bladder wall. Trying to keep her BG under renal threshold is super important.
We also give her a supplement by the brand name Cosequin. When she's having an episode (like now

) we up the dose of it.
Because it's painful, kitty will feel unwell and may not have a great appetite. My advice is as long as she eats some food, give the insulin. I've noticed that once the insulin onsets, she'll go back to her bowl and finish the food.
Hope this helps. And hope Baby feels better soon
