Hi all,

This my first post about Pookey in the Lantus forum! I’m excited to get started and to get to know some of you!

Came over from the main page, thanks for the referral @Bron and Sheba (GA) @Diane Tyler's Mom GA @tiffmaxee @Bandit's Mom

Welcome thread:
https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/new-member-newly-diagnosed.295594/#post-3219513

Pookey is newly diagnosed, first couple readings have been high. I spoke to the vet today and they said to stay the course and continue with the injections for 2 weeks, then reevaluate.

We are making the switch to low carb dry on a 4 times a day schedule. Also going to be testing for ketones daily once the supplies arrive.

How quickly should I expect to see an improvement in his BG levels?

Thank you! -Tim

Welcome to the Lantus Board.
Yes post everyday and always link your previous post to the new one. Good job the way you did your title and linking your previous post.
Can you get some tests in after you take Pookey's PMPS and some more tests in after the AMPS

Welcome to the forum. It will take 5-7 days to build the depot. Which foods are you trying? Have you started with one?

From the SLGS sticky
Hold the dose for at least a week:
  • Unless your cat won’t eat or you suspect hypoglycemia
  • Unless your kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L). If kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L) decrease the dose by 0.25 unit immediately.
After 1 week at a given dose perform a 12 hour curve, testing every 2 hours OR perform an 18 hour curve, testing every 3 hours. Note: Random spot checks are often helpful to "fill in the blanks" on kitty's spreadsheet. The goal is to learn how low the current dose is dropping kitty prior to making dose adjustments.
  • If nadirs are more than 150 mg/dl (8.3 mmol/L), increase the dose by 0.25 unit
  • If nadirs are between 90 (5 mmol/L) and 149 mg/dl (8.2 mmol/L), maintain the same dose
  • If nadirs are below 90 mg/dl (5mmol/L), decrease the dose by 0.25 unit

Here's an example only about doing a 12 hour curve
I forgot what your shooting times are so here's an

Example
Lets say you test at 7 AM, then feed Pookey ,then you give insulin

So your next test would be 2 hours later which would be
at 9:00 AM then
at 11:00 AM
at 1:00 PM
at 3:00 PM
at 5:00 PM
at. 7:00 PM

Hello and welcome over to the LLB board. I was reading back your previous post and the discussion of wet vs dry. Should you decide to switch to wet food, or at least introduce him to it (a good idea), this post might have some tips that help:

We have a saying here, ECID (every cat is different). You've got two things going on at once. Once is the insulin starting, and as others have said, it takes several days for the initial depot to build. The second thing is a change in food. Depending on how different the carb % is on the food you are switching too and from, that effect can be seen sooner. But it can still take a couple days for the old food carbs to get out of the system.

So, you might see something sooner or later than expected. It is up to Pookey. :cat:. I strongly recommend trying to get a before bed test at night each night if you can, and it's at least a couple hours after PMPS. Many cats go lower at night. We determine how to change the dose based on how low it is taking the cat.

I’m easing him off the Meow Mix Original Choice dry and into Purina Pro Plan DM dry 50/50 at the moment. I have higher protein food than the DM, but trying to avoid changing too many things in a short period.

Thanks Diane! I think I will wait for the depot to build before doing a full 12 hour curve. I wonder how feeding works during a curve test…

OK great, thanks! I just did my first test after PMPS. It looks like a dose increase is in our future, but I will wait for a week to make sure the depot is full.

I will research more on wet food. Any concern with switching food brands and types (dry/wet) too frequently?

There is no problems switching food. It’s best when switching to do it gradually to avoid intestinal problems ie diarrhea. Lower carbs is best and the insulin needs will decrease. You mentioned before he could stand to lose weight and wet food makes that easier.

Congrats on that first PM test. It is still too early to say what this dose will do for him though.

I had about different proteins that I rotated Neko through, so she had variety and wouldn't get tired of her food. Plus if she went off one, I still had 3 more. Note, she was a foodie when diabetic, picky was not in her vocabulary until years later when she got additional conditions.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing about Neko - that’s a beautiful post in your signature.
