Good evening,

came home an hour ago. Right in time for shot time. I did a fur shot this morning. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: And again it was my fault with the needle going through on the side. I don't know how I can prevent it. It makes me crazy and of course I was scared tonight I would do another fur shot but I think it worked. I don't trust me anymore.

There is something wrong with my technique. It is easier for me to do a very thick fold so the needle can't go through but there are not many places where I can do it on her body and I feel I inject too often in the same place anyway. So sometimes I can only grab a thin fold and the risk the needle is coming out on one side is there. I try to feel with my fingers if I can feel a needle but it doesn't always work and Binie is not patient enough that I can take too much time.

Thank god Binie is doing well so I hoped she can take it somehow and wasn't harmed too much.

Besides this totally unnecessary fur shot, I feel things are going well. After the greens on Saturday I thought she would bounce more.

Arggghhhh... I try to forget this day.

I hope everyone has a safe surf! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I forget if you tried the roll methods, Heike??
I was having same issue and find it works better for me. Ivy doesn't really have loose skin to "tent" so since I now do the roll method it seems much better (antijinx).

Do you need a link to review that technique? I think there may be a sticky with info.

Hope she recovers quickly and you both have a very good night. Kisses to your sweet Binie!!:bighug::kiss::kiss::bighug:

Hi Staci,
I would love to do the roll method. Binie is quite patient now while I tent her skin but she hates me to roll her fur/skin. I don't know why. But I keep on trying because I really don't understand, how I can prevent furtshots with my method. I feel two times in three weeks is too often. But maybe I should keep on trying to roll her skin/fur. I already found the description of the method in the past and I think it is clear. Thank you so much!:kiss::kiss:

I do that too, I switched to the roll method a few months ago. I still had a fur shot (when she was sick, I did it while she was laying down and trying to escape, not the best idea!) but I feel that I can control where I am a little more.
It happens, it's annoying but she will get back on track :bighug:

Thank you Cecile! Sharing your experience makes me feel less like an idiot... I keep on trying the roll method!

Awww, she's a fussy girl. I hope it goes better, sometimes we seem to have these trends where we mess up. It's not just you!!

I always seem to be better at shooting one side vs. the other. If you are holding the insulin with your right hand and skin with your left, and are finding it easier to grab into the left side when her face is forward, maybe try shooting when she is facing the opposite direction. Also, I don’t shoot sideways to the tent, I go right into the middle and downward, basically parallel to the body, if that makes sense.

Thank you Christie! I always tent with the left hand and shoot with the right. I don't find one side easier than the other. I also shoot in the middle and downward but sometimes the fold seems to be too thin so the needle goes out of the tent again somewhere near the bottom. How thick is the fold you are having between your fingers?

I start the grab wide and then end up with about a centimetre thick. I don’t stretch up too far away from the body, since Maverick doesn’t like that.

Thank you Christie! I will try to grab wider now. I think I don't do it enough. Wish to look over your shoulder while you do it.... I hope Maverick is having a beautiful day in the lagoon today! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

You’re welcome, hope you can find it easier soon. I also tend to stick to the scruff and shoulder area, mostly because that’s where I seem to be able to grab better. You’d think after 7+ years I should be good at it lol, you’ll get to a good way to inject I’m sure. :bighug:

Me too. That’s my general area also

What is this roll method?

Heike are you using the 8mm or 12mm needles? I know they say use the 12 with longer fur, but despite having medium to long fur Methos’ is very silky and lays very flat so I use the 8mm. I admit he’s a sweet, patient boy so I have time to part his hair to be sure I see where the needle goes in so I don’t need a longer needle.

my pet sitter, who’s a senior vet tech, uses his fur to make a tent (not sure if you could do that with short hair) I worry it feels like pulling his hair but she said just do it gently, it doesn’t need a lot of traction, and she thinks they mind less than pinching. Sometimes I pinch mostly I lift by some fur.

she also suggested shaving an area then injecting around in it like following the hands of a clock—but methos needs his fur to protect his fragile skin so I didn’t. But it may work for you since Binie has such thick fur

Heike and Colleen, here's a link to the roll method. Scroll down and be sure to watch the last video:

I was doing SO many fur shots, and this has helped me a lot.

I will also share what Wendy suggested: start a fur shot jar and throw in a dollar every time you do a fur shot. At the end of the year, buy yourself something nice with the money you've collected.

Good luck!! :bighug:

Thank you for sharing this @Karen and Chispa

And I like the swear/fur shot jar idea. I think we all will have a nice fund for ourselves for many reasons :banghead::bighug:

I know you have already had TONS of feedback but just thought I'd share what I do anyway. Shooter is a big fat so and doesn't have much loose skin either. I don't have to pull up a huge chunk most of the time though so when it isn't thick, I shoot on more of a 45 degree angle into him. If I were to shoot parallel (completely sideways) it would definitely come thru the other side.

Having watched the video I think a lot of how I do it is different. Some may be influenced by Methos’ inelastic thin skin. The video is similar to how I did Erik my previous Cushing cat, but 30 yr ago I was told to use the scruff (only). Like I said I usually use his fur to lift up and I position myself relative to him so i shoot toward his head bc it’s easier for me to part his fur so i see the needle go in. I admit im blessed with a cooperative cat.

Closer to the scruff i use the downward angle to start, further back on the thorax less angle more parallel to his body. Once im in place i let off tension but i have to to make sure he doesn’t leak (inelastic skin). Also it sort of looked like they’re saying to shoot “across” the tent side to side but I don’t think they mean that. I shoot along the length of the tent—when I pull his skin up by the fur ( again not very high not much tug)a little triangle forms at the end of the tent. If I’m uncertain I’ll push that area and can definitely see the tent “end”then shoot there…this is easiest seen for me when I’m on the thorax so I shoot that dimpled tent end with less downward angle than near scruff bc there’s not a lot of distance from skin to deeper things
